Spying
I just purchased a MJ, actually it was a gift, and looking at another website I was advised that MJ actually can see all the web sites you have visited. I searched the forum but could not find out how to block these intrusions, in a very simple step by step set up. Can anyone help me. Thanks in advance.
BTW, after using the MJ, one of my outgoing calls got cut off after 5 minutes. If this normal to have dropped calls. I find the quality and sound very superior to Skype with no delay, which is great. A Canadian area code would be great as well, but as others have posted on this board, it is not likely to happen.

This is the first i've heard of MJ logging websites visited. Can you provide a link to the website. Glad to hear MJ is working for you. I've noticed call quality has improved in recent months. In lieu of a Canadian number, the way I look at it is I have a local number for relatives in the US to call me for free. I still keep a regular landline so that's my local number. I'm not ready to depend entirely on MJ yet so the landline will be around for awhile.
Re: Spying
Normally calls should not drop until you hit the 60 or 90 minute time limit (not sure what the exact limit time is though). If you only drop a call once a week or so, I wouldn't worry about it.jimmied wrote:BTW, after using the MJ, one of my outgoing calls got cut off after 5 minutes. If this normal to have dropped calls. You can get a Canadian area code, but you have to pay a lot more for it and it's not really worth it. For the cost of doing that, I'd rather sign up with an ISP that provides VOIP for $10/mth and get better service and support with a CDN number.A Canadian area code would be great as well, but as others have posted on this board, it is not likely to happen.

Here is one of the websites that I looked at which does not give a good review on MJ

WoW! After going to that website, I'm sending my MagicJack's back! I didn't even know I was having all those problems. (JK)
I believe the limit is still at 2 hours before calls are dropped; otherwise it's a system glitch.Normally calls should not drop until you hit the 60 or 90 minute time limit (not sure what the exact limit time is though). If you only drop a call once a week or so, I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Spying
I read the rip-off report for which you provided a link. There wasn't a whole lot of objective information, just a rant. I searched for "watch" (your own word) and "monitor", to see what was written about MJ watching what web sites you visit. Nothing, no hits. Sounds like an urban myth to me and I've noticed no signs of MJ monitoring my web browsing. My advice is ignore what you've read about MJ monitoring your browsing activity.jimmied wrote:Here is one of the websites that I looked at which does not give a good review on MJ

Did you read the rests of the posts at that ripoff site? There were lots of positive reviews of MJ.

Thanks, tony, another Canadian, for the reply. I still think MJ is a good tool, although some of my calls got caught off after 5 minutes, but the MJ support told me how to fix this problem on my internet settings, and now seems to work ok. They also gave me a Canadian toll free number to call, to renew the MJ, as the on line form wants a ZIP code, which we Canadians do not have, and the renewal or any new MJ customers cannot get a MJ without this ZIP code. The number is 1 800 649 1271
I really don't think the link I posted was really valid, but I thought I would post it to see the response.

Hi,
Thanks for posting the 1-800 number. Curious what MJ support suggested for fixing the cut-off problem? I haven't had any calls cut off that I recall, though I'm using MJ less frequently now and instead am using a paid subscription for VOIP which has turned out to be very reliable and cheap ($0.005 per minute or about 30 cents per hour). It's hard to believe 15 years ago we were paying almost 30 cents/minute with a BC Tel landline (plus you had to rent the phone too from the phone company). Okay, I'm dating my self now.

tony, this is the second fix for dropped calls. so far it has worked for me and includes a mj update.
If you are having problems with MJ cutting off at the 5 minute mark, download the upgrade as follows:
turn off your firewall as follows but make sure you turn it on after following all the instructions below.
Start button > Settings > Control Panel > Windows Firewall, turn off
click the link to download and run the magicJack upgrade (applicable for both XP & Vista):
http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe
run the upgrade.
CTRL+ALT+DEL on your keyboard.
Click on the Processes tab and look for magicJack.exe there.
Right click on it and set it to High Priority.

Thanks Jimmied,
I've used fix #2 several times and it ensures the MJ has the lastest software. Regarding fix #1, maybe others can comment, but I'm not sure I want to use a distant DNServer (talk4free.com which I believe is in the US) rather than one closer and offered by my ISP? I realize that all DNServers get synchronized and should point to the same IP addresses. I would suggest pointing to talk4free's DNServers as a temporary test to see if your MJ call quality improves, then go back to the DNS you normally use by default (i.e., let your system automatically connect to a DNS).
