Running Magicjack w/o MBP USB port or with Ariport Extreme?

Post by Fallen.AngelAA »

Hi, Ok so I am a University student who just bought a new MBP (and MJ of course) so please explain the steps as if explaining to a 3rd grader (my maturity level isn't too far off either haha). Seriously tho...

Hardware I have:
Macbook Pro (Late 2008) (MBP)
Airport Extreme Base station (Airport Util Version 5.4.1) (AEBS)
Cordless phone (Panasonic KX-TG8231CB) (CP)
Magicjack (MJ)

Problem: As a Uni student, I am in/out of the dorm continuously and can't plug in/out MJ all the time (its a nuisance to say the least) and IDEALLY want MJ running when I am out with my MBP (so 24/7 as if I have a landline).

My solution was to connect MJ transfer the "start magicjack.app" to my comp then conntect MJ to AEBS and have it avail over the network. That did not work =[ (and here I though technology was supposed to make my life easier *sigh*).
AEBS>MJ>CP = flop and brain pain lolz

SOMEONE (I shall call you my knight in shining armor  ) PLEASE HELP!!!:
-Is there a way/hack/trick for me to connect MJ to AEBS and get it to work? (All the research I have done says no... and I am at my wits end!!!!)
-How can I make MJ work without it being attached to MBP usb port?
I read stuff about SIP adapters, but I don't quite understand what it is as I am not very up to date with geek lingo... someone please explain if I can make this setup work! and how?!?! Please.

:?: In short:
How do I make MJ work without connecting it to my MBP port. Please and Thank you.

You can't do this...

Your AEBS has a USB port but that port is to share a printer. The printer does not run software on your AEBS, but is just attached to it.

The mJ is a tiny piece of hardware, and to make it work, you MUST run its software. The AEBS isn't really a computer (well, it is, but it's a computer that is designed to do a very specific purpose, and nothing else.). The AEBS does not run MacOS (or Windoze, for that matter.) So, plugging in your mJ to the AEBS will NEVER work, because the AEBS can't run the mJ software.

And there's no way around it.

Solutions:

1) Get a second computer. Pick up an old used laptop that runs Windows, or someone's cast-off desktop. Set it up to be the mJ base station.

2) You're in college. Take awhile to learn about mJ, and getting the SIP information, and running an ATA. But, it'll be a hobby, and running an ATA is against the mJ TOS.

3) Stop being a lazy ass and plug and unplug your mJ from your MBP.

4) Buy a cheapy netbook that runs Windows, and use that as your mJ base station. You can pick up a great netbook for the purpose for around $200.

5) Buy an HP Thin Client and use that as your mJ base station. Search the forums here for more information about it.

For my money, the netbook would be a better option if you're going to spend the $200.

Honestly? Too lazy in 2 weeks to plug in the mJ to your MPB to beg more $$$ from mom? Now THAT is lazy.

Not too lazy...

I was joking around before. Seriously though, I am involved with 3 clubs, on the swimming team and I am studying law. Quite frankly I don't have the time to plug in and wait then plug it out like 20 times in a day... gets kinda annoying.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET MJs credentials? Thanks.

I tried using the AEBS usb port...

it doesn't show over my network for some reason. I tried opening ports and everything still nothing.

Now I got the Linksys VOIP Internet phone adapter... can anyone please tell me how I transfer credentials or post a link please?

What doesn't show over your network?

The mJ? What part of "it isn't going to work when you plug it into an AEBS" don't you understand? Never. No can do. Won't work. Won't ever.

If you need the credentials, take some time to read around here. There are hundreds of posts telling you how.

Quick question about this. I know that the AEBS cannot run the MJ software, but my MBP can. I have a very similar set-up as fallen.angel, but with one difference. I have a seven-port, powered USB hub connected to my AEBS. I would love to have the MJ work while plugged into this hub. I understand that my computer would have to be on and running the software for this to work, but my main concern is the location of the phone. Me and my computer will move around the house all day and I would love not to lug a phone with me as I move. Life would be perfect if I could run the software on my very mobile computer, and leave the hardware in my living room with the AEBS.

Here's the interesting part; when I go into the AirPort Utility, the AEBS recognizes the MJ as a drive on the USB hub. However, when I look at the file tree for the AEBS on my MBP, the MJ does not show up. To me this seems like a simple fix in theory...

All that needs to happen is as follows: I run the MJ software that I copied off of the dongle and into subfolders of my applications folder. When the software runs, it will attempt to locate the hardware and finalize opening. It will see the hardware mounted in my "/Volumes" folder. The MJ will work.

So, now to the real question. Does anyone know of a way to mount the MJ into the "/Volumes" folder when it is plugged into an AEBS? Thanks is advance and I hope I haven't bored you all with my babble!

Again, I don't think this would ever work without a complete rewrite of the mJ software.

Sharing a USB device over the AEBS is not intended for general USB use. The problem is that the mJ is not a typical USB device. It has multiple hardware components built into the little form factor, and also multiple USB flash drives. It's not a matter of just running the software. It also has to physically interact with the hardware. From what I know, that will NEVER happen over the AEBS.
