problems with evo t20

Post by lmercor »

Hello to all.

I was playing with this TC and I wanted to set it up with magicjack, at the beginning the client ask me for the drivers, usb drivers for flash memory and then for usb audio. I loaded the drivers and reboot the client. I tough that was all, but no, the magicjack won't load, a message appear and it said magicjack is not supported on your version of windows I'm wondering why, because a lot of people is using thin clients with XPE and they said the magicjack works fine on this version of windows..

any suggestion, registry hacks, any hack

Thanks
Gracias.

First what TC do you have?

Did you do a fresh install of XPe before you started?

Where did you download the drivers from?

Are you sure the drivers installed ok?

Hard to try and help you figure out what is going on from the info we have so far.

thanks for the fast reply

well the TC is a compaq evo T20, and I did a fresh install of the XPe using the firmware at the hp/compaq website, I load the XPe using the netxfer utility, everything went well until I started to plug flash memories and the magicjack.

The TC starts asking for drivers when I plugged the flash and the Magicjack. Well I took the drivers from a computer with XP and I loaded into the XPe TC. and the usb drivers for the MagicJack (tiger), I downloaded from here.

apparently everything install, but first the magicjack screen wont load and when I clicked on the cd drive the magic jack creates a message appears and said that the version of windows is not valid.

I dont know if the XPe is missing something and I don't know what is it.

thanks in advance

Are you sure it's running XPe because the T20 only ran CE from what I can recall. Even with XPe, the 300Mhz Geode GX1 System On Chip CPU is just too slow to run mJ consistantly, if at all. The T20 also lacks a standard PC BIOS and RTC battery backup, but you can mod it for the latter. You're better off to ditch that one and tinker with something else. A Neoware c50/CA15 would be a good starter for you, cheap and dependable.

When you run C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe what does the top line report as the operating system?

Did your flash drive work after you installed the usb drivers?

If it is CE instead of XPe that would explain where the wrong operating system message is coming from.

BTW I know some about the HP 57XX TCs and XPe but Alpman is well versed on the other flavors so I would certainly think about his advice on the t20.

Well it looks like it should be the correct version on XPe and I assume it validated ok on install so this is getting to be a tough one.

I went back and re-read your input to see if I missed some clue there. You said you clicked on the drive magicjack created. MJ should actually have created two drives; well one drive and one CD drive. Which one did you click on the first in the order (CD which should be the smaller one) or the larger approx 17.5MB one? Also if you explore the second one what files and folders do you see there?

If you right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage" then open "Device Manager" one drive should show up as "YMAX MagicJack USB Device" Dsik Drive and the other (smaller) shows up as a CD drive. Are there any yellow exclamation marks shown indicating an error?

What happens if you open the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp and locate setup.exe (in one of the subfolders there if I remember correctly) and double click it?

What kind of processor load are you seeing in task manager?

yes the magicjack creates 2 cd drives, I have not check for the devices in order to see if everithing is fine, but i think so... the thing is that the magicjack wont install. when you plug the magicjack in a regular computer, the installation start with a magicjack picture on the screen, well that whole proccess does not happen on the client and the folder on the HD is not been created. but I can see the 2 cd drives. When I clic the second one, it gave me the error or wrong version.

thanks

Hi lmercor,

I've not been doing much with my MJ as of late, so my info may not be the most current. My current MJ usage is portable. Anyhow...

I have run my MJ on a Wyse WT9235LE (part # 902038-26) thin client. The Compaq/HP Evo T20's are made by Wyse, the only differences being the case, logos, etc. Like the Wyse models, the Evo T20 is available in many different configurations and OSs: CE, NTe, and XPe.

I upgraded the RAM in mine to 384M. The flash is at 256M, which I think is the original size. The system ROM is: XpressRom 3.2.5. Checking the operating system, it is identified under control panel / system as: XP embedded version 2002 service pack 1. A command window identifies it as Microsoft Windows XP version 5.1.2600, the same as yours.

The problems which I encountered were initially obtaining the correct audio driver, the tiger one, if I recall correctly. The write cache will also periodically overflow and require a system reboot. The drive space (flash) is limited in size and the MJ is rather sloppy with its creation of many redundant files. I had to uninstall anything in the XPe OS which was not needed in order to free up more space for MJ. Things are generally fine until the dreaded “lucky you upgrade” which always fails due to insufficient write cache. I handle this by deleting all the MJ files, enabling flash writes, let MJ do an upgrade, then disable flash writes again.

Careful with the Wyse/Compaq/HP terminology here. Enabling the write filter means to disable writes, and disabling the write filter means to enable writes! Stupid choice of wording!

I just plugged my MJ into my Wyse thin client for the first time in several months, and everything booted up correctly. Of course, since it has been a while, I got the “lucky you” message... :-(

Can you be more specific with actual error message?

Interesting....

The link that the error message references, states that microsoft is eliminating support for XP with service packs 1 and 1a. While this link does not specifically say that MJ is not supporting SP1(a), your error message seems to confirm this.

Since I had my WT9235LE up and running, I decided to let MJ do its upgrade. First I had to delete its existing files (just all the sub-directories below the main one) to make room, and enable flash writes to occur. After the update I disabled flash writes again.

I tested my MJ with a few calls, and all is well!

Why did MJ not give me the error message about SP1(a)? I don't know but perhaps because it was an upgrade rather than a new installation.

I doubt that the version of the hardware dongle makes a difference, but mine is a Gen 2.

I'm not sure what to suggest. I don't think it is possible to apply updates to these machines from microsoft over the internet. You could try installing on another machine with a later service pack, then copy the installation files (probably just the main directory) to the thin client. However, I think some registry edits will be in order too. :-(

Perhaps someone knows how to fool MJ into thinking that you have SP2.

The XPe image I am using came from HP's website since I have HP T5710 TCs and it is SP2.

So that would account for a difference. I was not aware of the dropping of support for <SP2.

You can find the various Wyse firmware packages on their web site for the WT9235LE (same as an XPe Evo T20) at the following address. However, it looks like these are all SP1.
http://wyse.com/serviceandsupport/suppo ... del=9235LE

They also have security patches, for which they state "applicable to XPe SP2 images and XPe SP3 images". However I see no specific updates from SP1 to SP2 or 3.

If you'd like, I can email you my registry file. It may or may not work as is, given the different firmwares, HP vs Wyse, and installed packages. It should provide the needed MJ entries, which you could then edit into your registry.
