Jwgray,

I don't blame you for missing the joke, because it's not a very good one (unless you're playing a joke on ME).

The OP is trying to suggest that all he needed to do was plug the MJ into a 5vdc power source, and plug his phone in to make calls.

Of course, that can't be true, because the "I" in "VOIP" stands for "internet." Without it, all you get is a funny photograph. ;-)

I don't see why not since your potato has more processor power than the Commodore 64 I used for my first MagicJack.

Where can I get the adapter in the first picture? It looks like if I set this up, it will behave just like that tk6000, so I will not need to use a computer. Correct?

I can't tell if you're joking or not, but just in case you're not, I'll make this clear for you and others like you (non-technical types).

This picture is a joke.
The MJ will not work like this.
This is fake.
This isn't real.
Do not try this, unless you want to waste your time.
You can't make a Magic Jack work without a computer.
This can't be done.
It's bogus.
No can do.
Don't you believe it.
Magic Jack needs a computer to function.
Magic Jack needs an internet connection to function.

Similar results can be obtained without the pictured adapter by simply placing the magicJack near the AC outlet. Protip: duct tape it to the wall.

Everyone knows it is possible. There are in fact devices that allow you to run ethernet over electrical outlets.

My question was simply what exactly do I need to buy to make this hack work? Thanks in advance.

Sir,

You do not need to be rude.

Clearly you are the idiot, as this site is comprised of MANY posts about how to use the magicJack without a computer.

From what I understand, the magicJack uses traditional VoIP. This means that I can use other devices, and DO NOT NEED A COMPUTER!

Do a search before posting stupid stuff. Clearly you know nothing about VoIP.

I beg to differ, I have been a contributing member of this forum for over 2 years and have perused internat based forums for over 12 years.
I count myself among one of the first early abusers who divined a method to use MJ Sip credentials without benefit of the hardware dongle.

The gullibility you exhibited in your first post really struck me as remarkable illustration of wishful thinking and I felt a strong retort was required to disabuse you of your misapprehension.

Ha! So, NOW you admit you do not need the PC!

It is funny, because earlier you insisted that a computer was required:

Dude, I know I'm breaking my own rule here, but come on. Give it a rest. Your 15 minutes are up.

If you truly are the genius here, then you know that the purpose of using an ATA WITHOUT a computer, is to use the SIP credentials without the dongle. The picture shows the dongle still in use, which requires a computer. Therefore, the judgment of your ineptness, still stands.

However, congratulations are in order. You have won the "Moron of the week" award.

Rejoice.

Simply amazing. Someone posts something that is amazing. Using the magicJack much like the tk6000 - WITHOUT a computer.

I simply ask for the details, and everyone here jumps down my throat.

Thanks to the original poster for the PM. I now have this working. NO MORE PC! WOO-HOO!

Ben, I'm glad to hear it's working for you. If call quality becomes an issue, consider duct taping a USB hub next to it. And don't cheap out, get a good roll of duct tape.

The potato method interests me, but I've had no luck yet with krinkle cut or curly fry. I'm now considering to invest in a whole brand new potato.

Edit: I found an old yam in a box of parts in the basement. I hope it works. There's nothing like breathing some life back into old gear.

Now what a person might be able to do if they could make some way to connect to the majic jack servers is run their mj service on a pda with wifi. Then as long as you have a wireless connection you could connect to the wifi and make calls as normal. Another thing you could do and wouldnt be to hard to do other than running the wires is use usb self powered hubs and extensions (i got a 45 foot usb extension to work fine with my one wireless card) so as long as you have no more than 50 foot of run on the usb you could put usb ports in your walls using self powered hubs and extension cables. But fact is it would be pointless to do when all you have to do is find the nearest phone jack connect a phone line from the mj to the jack then hook up your phone to any jack in your house. Same as say vonage or twc digital phone. You don't need to go through all the hassle of running wires that way.

Right now im trying to go dongleless on windows 7 heh

Working Proof.. He musta disabled the power light as well... hahahah

PS : Just in case that dude is really mildy retarded...

Yes internet over electricity is possible,
but you still need a receiver or modem/network card to process the data...

Nevermind the drivers that are required for the MJ to run...

The closest you are going to get to no computer is "custom drivers on a gaming system or phone"... IE PSP , GP2x, Iphone etc etc... and that is only because they are really linux machines.... So technically still a computer..

No computer

Post by bigunk »

I hacked the credentials out of my MJ and entered them into my Panasonic phone system. The dongle is on my desk collecting dust while I make calls. I'm just trying to figure out how to spoof the caller ID. It's for testing purposes, so don't think I'm about to become a telemarketer. Using industry standard SIP lines, I can spoof all I want, but it seems MJs server will reject CLIP changes and only send the number assigned in my account.

Neat.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

Stop wasting your time, MJ has removed the functionality to permit you to apply a random caller-id from the server side. Will never happen with MJ.

There are other IP based telephony service suppliers who do allow you to dictate the outbound caller-id but they are all pay-as-you-go businesses and charge from 1.2 to 2.9 cents per minute to use their service. I would suggest telasip.com as a very reliable outfit.

Good luck

MUCH better reception if the potato is baked and EVEN BETTER with sour cream or butter!! Just be careful it does not get into the phone jack. Otherwise it could "slip out" and your sound might get "mashed" :)
