old computer
i want to use my old gateway as a dedicated computer. Can I install an operating system from a thin client?, or do I have to have the full windows xp operating system? the hard drive is 10gb, 466 mhz processor, 192 mb ram, with me operating system. Should I just install xp or is there a better way? this computer would only be for the magicjack. I know thin clients are cheap.
The thin client downloads are for specific thin clients, you can't even put one downloaded OS for one model of TC on another model of TC. If you have an unused XP license then put that on your old laptop. Your MJ setup won't cost you a cent. Power consumption will be similar to that of a TC. MJ won't work with ME.

thanks
thanks for responding. You answered my question. I do have xp disc and keys. but the computer is actually a desktop. Do you think it is too old? I think it should be fine if only magicjack is running on it?

Hi, it's worth trying as it sounds like it'll be at no cost to you (other than your time). It would be a good test of MJ working on an older CPU. When installing XP, consider loading the minimum of Windows components (or turn off services you won't need like Indexing.juancollier wrote:thanks for responding. You answered my question. Another idea, you can probably get away with not needing antivirus to free up some processor speed. Load your minimum XP configuration and MJ. Run the MJ update from the MJ site (it's marked "Vista"). Create a partition on your harddrive for an image of your XP setutp. Then use Macrium or Clonezilla (Norton Ghost clones) to make a backup image of your C: drive. If you suspect a virus, just restore from the image. If all you have is MJ on the computer, then you won't have anything else to update.
Let us know how you make out and if MJ works on a 466 MHz processor.
PS if you can wire your PC to your router, that's better than wifi for mj.

the computer (466 mhz.) had something wrong with it? I tried to put xp on it to try and use it, but it wouldn't take xp, the computer originally had 98se then me?? is it really a graduation to use thin clients? are they better? which brand and model? my current setup works great. and it cost me nothing.
Hi, if MJ is working great or your current rig, then the only reason to move to a thin client is just to tinker. MJ will work fine on a TC.juancollier wrote:the computer (466 mhz.) had something wrong with it? Good to know. I was responding to another post in which the person was asking if 96 MB was enough. It should be if MJ works with 64 MB. The MJ FAQ's don't seem to say what minimum memory is required.Matt9876 wrote:Old HP 633MHz processor with ... 64MB RAM ,XP sp3,MJ works great on this dedicated machine.
Anybody running MJ with less than 64MB?

I have successfully run with just 96mb (with 16mb shared video, so really it was 80mb) also, but I had a system crash when mJ tried to update. I suggest to change the pagefile to a minimum of 256 if running anything less than 128mb RAM as you may run into out of memory errors and/or system crash upon an mJ update. Also, turn off MS auto updates and any unused services.
