I couldn't get a dial-tone on mine until I went back and did the vista upgrade on the customer care page.

I know until recently I could transfer to my google voice number after 20 seconds then have it ring back to my MJ and get 8 rings. Now when I transfer to it my calls go right to google's voicemail without ringing back to my MJ.

I keep hoping for Caller ID name in one of their updates since the Magic features plug in didnt work for me ( gave me VERY garbled sounds and thats one thing I have never had with my MJ).
They always seem to change things for the worse when MJ does an update. So far I haven't seen anything negitive on my end, but then I have only made 1 call so far today. Time will tell.

The caller id name worked for me but it seems like the person had to have a pots line. I'm using the xlite plugin now with sipgate. I forward my MJ number to my google number which rings my free number from sipgate now. This way I can get all the google voice features and continue to make calls on MJ as well. After the beeping problem last summer it's nice to have the ability to make calls off MJ's network if they mess things up again and continue to use the the dongle. I have also put $10 into a Callcentric account to test out and I'm very impressed with the call quality.

I think if you save numbers to your contact list and put in a name it will show that on your caller id. Otherwise you have to get Magicfeatures.

Nope having a name with a number in your MJ contact list doesnt transfer the name to your phone when it rings, ONLY the # ( it DOES show name and number on the softphone though). That was the main reason I bought MagicFeatures. BUT having it garble my voice made it usless for me. I DID love seeing the Caller ID name in the short time I used MagicFeatures. I dont see why MJ themselves can't impliment that feature. Sigh MAYBE next update huh??? Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Lucky bloke.....
None of the people I know, and to whom I have recommended MJ to, can see the names on their phone even if they are in their contact list. No idea why you can, but that is awsome!!!

I am pretty sure he said he sees the name on his phone, unless he was busting my chops and meant the names he has stored in his phone already, NOT when he gets a call and the caller ID shows name AND #. Thats what I want, the damn name to show on my phone when I get a call. I mean I have MOST of the names to the people I talk to in my MJ softphone contact list. How hard can it be to transfer those names to the phone when I get a call. I mean MagicFeatures Plugin can do it, surely MJ themselves can! Sadly the MagicFeatures didn't work well for me ( the name on called ID worked GREAT). Everytime the plugin was active it made my voice sound HORRIBLE.. I have never had ANY voice issues in the 17 months I have had my MJ. Shame as I really liked the called ID name feature best of all..
Oh well MAYBE the next MJ update huh?

I must have gotten some kind of "update", 'cuz now I keep getting the error message "magicJack has experienced a problem and must be shut down."

This has happened several times in the last day or so. I have never had that problem before. I'm running MJ on a dedicated laptop with a fresh install of Win XP home. I have it set to never download Windows updates.

Any idea how to fix this?

Well for one you should get the Windows updates as there are always security issues with Windows which they attempt to patch the second Tuesday of every month.
As far as MJ updates, no way to stop them from happening that I know of. I have tried several registry hacks and none work.
You can try contacting their online support chat and see if they can suggest anything
OR maybe go to their web page and d/l the update manually and run it and see what happens.

all the names I have on my magic jack contact list I have also put these names and numbers into my cordless phones phonebook so when I receive call from someone on my contact list just their name appears on the phones screen.

I have my phone set up the same way and when I get a call ONLY the # appears on my phone. I guess your phone works differently than most. But as I said from the begining, Lucky Bloke :)

Same here with my Panasonic DECT 6.0 handsets. However, if I get a call from someone not in the phone's address book (for lack of a better phrase), it only gives me a phone number.

I am now running the magicfeatures plug-in, and they use the yellow pages lookup, but that features worked before installing it.

I guess only certain phones work that way with MJ... Dumb question, if you were to use that phone on a tel system without called ID would the names still show up if someone on your internal phone contact list called? Maybe that is a feature of the phone??
I have used several phones to no avail ( 5.8 and dect 6) and I have a friend with MJ who has a Panasonic Dect 6 phone and he doesnt get names either. In fact none of the people I know with MJ get the name when a call comes in.
When I used MagicFeatures the name came thru just fine. It was getting the names from my MJ contact list.
Maybe one day I will get lucky and use a phone where the names will show up in my called ID

Does your friend have the talking caller ID feature? Using the magicJack service, the Panasonic handset will announce the caller from the phones address book. As with the normal caller, it will only announce the number if they aren't in the address book.

I would like to thank Magic Jack for failing several different ways with this update, lucky me, while a family emergency was happening. Having to unplug / replug magic jack to make a call or to receive a call just isn't right. Having all my contacts / calls vanish when I needed it most. Words can't describe how pissed I am right now.

"Lucky You" I got the upgrade (1.90.5212.3644) this morning around 1:35 a.m. while suffering from insomnia. I'm getting the weird message re: contacts and calls cannot be downloaded.

I guess I'll just have to wait and get lucky again to find out what the heck it all means.

I had the same problem but was working on some other things. When I finished what I was doing and went back to MJ sometime later my contacts and call history had appeared.

I wish I had been sniffing the network to see if my contacts and call list were being passed back and forth to MJ servers as might be indicated by the error message.

It means MJ in their "wisdom" has moved our contacts from residing on our PC's to their servers. Only reason I can think of is because after people format their MJ when they have a problem they aren't smart enough to save their contacts first. So now MJ does it for them. They got rid of the DND for pretty much the same reason, dumb bunnies. So just like America, MJ is dumbing down itself. Don't raise everyone UP, no no dumb the rest down..

Sad

Majic Jack.exe application error

Post by shumiron »

I think I am suffering from the same update problem except I get an application error message which requires restarting MJ for it to work again. MJ works for one 'transaction' then gets the error and must be restarted again.

Does anyone know if Magic Jack is aware of the problem and if they are doing anything about it?

I did start a string about my problem yesterday - Subject -> MagicJack. exe application error

I had the exact problem. I ran the Windows Update and allowed all of the recommended security patches, and there was one optional update for tigerjet usb. After installing those everything worked fine. Haven't had the error since.

Where are the Windows updates? I am running a TC dedicated to MJ set up by 'alpman' the TC seller. This setup has been working great until a couple days ago.

Whats happening now is their requiring the skin files to be active now for your MJ to register. When I deleted the skin files this morning to transfer calls to my cell after 4 rings I get a message saying cannot set call redirection to "phone number" and then then cannot dial phone number in current service configuration. This is MJ's way of stopping people from disabling their voicemail and transferring calls. More or less the way they went after ata users back in June their changing the way MJ registers now with their servers.

I don't actually have a quarrel with this strategy; at least not yet. But from the outset there have been a number of conspiracy theories about the motivations of MJ to do all kinds of nefarious things with user information coming from the dongle.

Interesting they made the change with no mention of data security or even that it was coming. Lots of folks are a little queasy about the idea of their personal information residing on someone else's server.

That's interesting information!

It makes me wonder, though. They freely let you forward your calls at the portal, yet they don't want you to have "ring then forward".

Isn't it in their best interest to hope you answer the call directly when your MJ rings, before forwarding the call? That way, they get to receive the termination fee, instead of automatically forwarding the call on to the number provided by the customer at the portal? (and forcing them to pay out to the receiving company)

That's exactly what happens to me. Reset it, use the phone once, then it crashes again. I did all the windows updates, but did not see the "tigerjet usb" one that ascarpace spoke of.

Oh, and I deleted all my contacts so I don't have to wait for the download. (I don't use the softphone anyway.) That, however, did not fix the crash problem.

I think it's 2 things one Dan wants complete control over MJ and nothing else. Second it probobly costs them money when we transfer all calls of the dongle. I'm wondering with call forwarding done at the server level they possibly avoid termination fees to other carriers that they incur by not having the calls directly on Ymax's network. Either way I still think my first answer is the most likely.

You may be right on both counts.

I'd like to know more about the termination "rules," and if there is a distinction between a network based redirected call (forward) vs a customer forwarded call.

One thing for certain, if the final destination is a PSTN line, Dan's gotta pay for each and every MJ customer call regardless of how the call was routed. Its the 'last mile' that counts.

Well this really sucks! Is the problem I am having with the app error related to the upgrade on 01-05-10? The problem seemed to start yesterday after the upgrade download. Does anyone have a fix?

Well good news is using Magicbeans you can still transfer calls and disable voicemail. I'm trying out Magicbeans and Magicfeatures plugin at the same time and both seem to work together. The caller id name and call waiting caller id work along with the call handling capabilities of Magicbeans.

magicjack.exe error

Post by shumiron »

I contacted MJ support chat. Following is chat text. NO HELP from them and I still have the problem.

Please wait for a site operator to respond.

You are now chatting with 'Stela'

Your Issue ID for this chat is ****

Stela: Hello, how may I help you?

Ronald Shumilak: Hello and Happy Neew Year. Yesterday my MJ started displaying an Magicjack .exe application error message. When this happens the MJ stops working until MJ is restarted. As soon as another 'transaction' is completed (call out or call in) the error message comes up and MJ must be restarted. What is the problem?

Stela: May I please have your magicJack phone number so I can check your account?

Ronald Shumilak: ****

Stela: Thank you for the information.

Stela: Please wait while I check that for you

Stela: Thank you for patiently waiting.

Stela: May I know if your magicJack device is plugged in right now?

Ronald Shumilak: yes and I am communicating with you using the same computer it's plugged in to.

Stela: Did you get any error message?

Ronald Shumilak: Not at this time.

Stela: Please click the link to download and run the magicJack upgrade (applicable for both XP & Vista):

Stela: http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe

Stela: Please let me know any error message after running the upgrade.

Ronald Shumilak: Upgrade finished and MJ restarted - no error message. But I didn't get the error message until I made a call or received a call. After that the error would appear about a minute later.

Stela: Please try connecting the magicJack into a different USB port and try using or not using the USB extension chord. Make sure magicJack is properly connected and securely attached to the computer's USB port. You may also want to try using and not using the USB extension cord.

Ronald Shumilak: I am not using the extension cord. The MJ was working OK until yesterday when this problem came up. Do you want me to stay on with you while I try another USB port? Also - should I try to initiate a call from MJ to see if error comes up before I switch USB ports?

Stela: Okay.

Stela: Hang on please.

Stela: Thank you for patiently waiting.

Stela: We will make a report on this issue Ronald. We are having some technical issues here in our end. Please wait for an email from us after few hours or you may chat us back for any updates.

Ronald Shumilak: Have you determined there is a problem with my hardware or software?

Stela: The problem is from our end so there's nothing to worry about.

Ronald Shumilak: But I don't have a phone line until you fix the problem, correct?

Stela: No worries, this issue will be fixed ASAP.

Stela: Our engineers are now working on it.

Ronald Shumilak: OK - a few hours is a long time.

Stela: Please bear with us.

Ronald Shumilak: OK - can we close the chat now?

Stela: Please chat us back from time to time for any updates.

Ronald Shumilak: OK

Stela: Thank you for understanding.

In which statement? I spoke of both. The magicJack update caused the problem. Somebody said there was a Windows update that included a tigerjet usb update that fixed the problem. I did not find said Windows update.

I fired up MJ today and saw a message in the interface about an important update that would downloaded in 60 secs.

And instead of showing "Ready to Call", MJ showed a message about connecting to the Internet and double-clicking. Did that. Nothing happened. Couldn't make any calls, though I got a dial tone.

Went into tech chat. Tried to get me to do all sort of crazy things, so I cut him off that the pass, told him I was an IT engineer not an idiot and for him to stop reading from a script and READ what I wrote.

He tells me to download this update for XP/Vista (I use Win7 and he said it was OK):

http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe

I asked him if the update was recent. He said NO.

I told him I already had all the updates and why would I need to run this again. He said to do it anyway.

So I did.

Of course when I downloaded and ran the update, the Green USB image appeared and then disappeared.

I started MJ and saw the same message.

So I killed tech chat and went to my user folder to see what new files were there

C:\Users\*****\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\

And sure enough, there were new folders (ug00000 and Upgrade) with today's date. The updates were dated 12-24-09 so of course they were new - contrary to what he had told me earlier. In fact, I went to my backup image and noticed that the previous updates were dated 08/09

So I went into the ug00000 sub-folder and ran the setup.exe program.

It did the update, I started MJ and it worked again.

Hope this helps someone.

I run my magicjack on a thin client and yesterday after i received a phone call my magicjack tried to update but it appears the update never completed and then i received a error message from the magicjack of error broken storage.

i never could get the magicjack to work on the thin client again and had to move the magicjack to the computer and format the magicjack drive to get it to work on the computer.

is anyone else having problems running the magicjack on the thin client since the update?

Jan 2010 Updates

Post by Bob_D »

I run with MJ plugged in 24/7 but shut down my system (XP SP2) at night and restart in the morning. All MJ calls are fowarded to my landline. I just use MJ for all long distance calls. I have been running this way since Jan of 2008.
MJ updated Dec 14, 2009 and all appeared fine.
MJ updated Jan 3, 2010 and all appeared fine.
MJ again updated on Jan 5 and again all appeared fine.
This a.m. on the 6th upon restarting I got the "need to plug in MJ" message. Unpulgging and plugging in again got the same response.
Finally got around to applying the upgrade (1.90.5212.3644) from the MJ site and all was fine. So I restarted the pc and got the stupid 'plug in' message again. I reapplied the upgrade and all is fine.
Something has to be wrong as the updates are too frequent. I hope thing get resolved soon.

After wasting a bunch of time with MJ support chat and doing a bunch of sh*t they suggested that didn't work, here's what they suggested that finally did work:

Control Panel --> Network Connections --> right click on your local area connection then click properties.

Click "use the following DNS Server address" and enter 67:90:152:122, click OK then close. (Nothing in alternate.)

Unplug MJ, restart computer, plug it back in, all is right with the world again.

was not getting my contacts downloaded since the updated on 1/5, yesterday. didn't realize they were saved on the MJ server. why is that necessary? a nice feature if one moves the dongle around i guess, but load them locally if the server is unavailable obviously!

did techm8's update instructions but didn't seem to get the contacts downloaded. added the DNS server, 67.90.152.122 (ns01.talk4free.com) and contacts were downloaded. only problem is now my dns server(s) are not set to my isp's, which is bad because all dns queries are going 19 hops from me to ns01.talk4free.com.

fix this pls MJ, and do a local lookup on contacts if the server download fails - computer programming 101 IMHO

ok, now after unplugging MJ and plugging it in again, my contacts are still not downloading even with the DNS server set as mentioned above, so there is definitely still a problem. i couldn't make an outgoing call initially either :-(

Anyone notice that the new provisioning information contains some additional info?

Code: Select all

[MagicJack.NetworkContacts]
NetworkContactsPassword="XXX"
ServerURLKey="XXX"
ServerURLFn1="XXX"
ServerURLFn1FS="XX"
ServerURL="https://data.magicjack.com/contactsStore.html"
UploadDelayTimeout=1800000
I XXX'd out some information.

All this is making me reconsider the netTalk tk6000. Seems like a lot of problems would be avoided by eliminating the computer or TC altogether. We'll see if they're around in a year after my MJ year expires. Then again, if I keep having problems with MJ, I may switch sooner.

You should never - ever - set your computer's DNS entry to ANYTHING other than your ISP's own servers or if you're using something like OpenDNS (www.opendns.org) which is what I use.

The crackpots over at MJ tech support are just that - crackpots who will just throw stuff at you in order to see what sticks. These forums are BY FAR more useful than ANY contact with MJ tech support.
