Listen Up, Dan !
So I hear that Local Number Portability (Number Porting) may once again this year be coming "SOON". I figure it's just a pipe dream and another empty promise, but if it somehow does happen, then it will truely put MajicJack on the same playing field as the likes of Vonage, JoiPhone, and Skype who all offer porting. My theory is that the majority of people who have not bought a MJ have not done so because they want to keep their existing phone number. Most folks who do buy a MajicJack still keep their existing landline for it's number. The MJ is then typically used for outgoing calls, while the older POTS landline is used for incoming. Imagine all the new incoming calls to MajicJacks [and thus all the termination fees MJ/YMAX collects from other CLECS] if more customers totally ditch the POTS and go VoIP only. So Dan, as you can clearly see, LNP is not only good for MJ customers ... it's also very good for MJ & YMAX.
I couldn't agree more. I purchased mine and didn't turn it on for almost a year, waiting for the option to keep my number. I finally gave up and ditched POTS and and use the MJ exclusively. I am in Los Angeles so there was a heavy load at first but things are going very smoothly. I am very impressed with the high quality of service. I would have used it sooner had I been able to port my line over.

I do not think so. Most people who do not want MJ (anymore) do not want it because it does not work for them.It is not suitable as a primary line for most people. The folks who forget this are those who are frustrated the most. I dropped my land line, but I rely on cell phones and MJ is perfect for me.So Dan, as you can clearly see, LNP is not only good for MJ customers ... it's also very good for MJ & YMAX.
MJ offers-officialy- a media service, not a telecom service. Once you provide telecom service you get into all kinds of issues like 911 charges, taxes and fees and you can forget about 20$ a year. The primary attractivity of this thing is it's extremely low price. You take it away and you have better alternatives.

Actually MajicJack/Y-Max is, in fact, a registered CLEC, which is subject to taxes and tarrifs.

They can be registered as a nursing home.Actually MajicJack/Y-Max is, in fact, a registered CLEC
Here is what they TOS expressly state :"The goods and services offered by magicJack provide a multimedia experience which includes a voice over Internet information service feature. It is not a telecommunications service and is subject to different regulatory treatment from telecommunications services. "
The lines are becoming blurry anyway.
I think that if MJ starts to offer number porting they would open themselves up to a ton of garbage they would not want to deal with. What would happen if your MJ died. I just got a second MJ and one of the features being offered when registering it was to have a vanity number for a few dollars a year. This seems to be a better fit with MJ to me. I like MJ and it works well for me but if I had a phone number I would not want to part with MJ would be the last place I would trust it with. At $20 a year and the fact that my calls sound good are more than I could ask for. Sad thing is I pay Verizon about $160 a month for our family plan and my calls on MJ sound just as good as Verizon. If MJ is forced to offer this and other features the price is only gonna go up. Then the whole point of using this service is pointless.

I upgraded from MJ to TK. With the NetTalk TK6000 (visit www.tk6000.com or www.nettalk.com ) you can either plug it into a computer's USB (for portability) or plug it directly into a router (for operation without a PC or ThinClient). The $100 cost covers you for a lifetime, with no annual bills at all. Anyone want my MJ for dirt cheap? It has 4 years of time left on it and the # can still be changed for free. Just PM me.
Here a possible temporary option for porting your number in the meantime:
