Correct Setup To Fax from Computer
Hello Everyone,
I wanted to write this because after searching the forum for how to fax with my new magic jack everyone tells you, " Its simple", "Just plug it in", "Voip faxing is no good", ect.... So after figuring it out I decided to write the correct steps. Why pay for a fax service when you can fax for free right from windows fax console like I have always done unlimited send and receive!
1. If you do not have windows fax console installed do that first. If you dont know how go here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306550
If you dont have you windows cd for the files that are needed go here and download it:
http://www.dlldump.com/
and complete the setup process: cover sheet and stuff. Oh yeah and just use the default modem.
2. Click on start, control panel, "phones and modems". Once the box pops up click on the "modems" tab. The default modem should already be highlighted if not highlight it and then click properties at the bottom.
3. Now for the missing step that nobody in form is telling peeps. When the new box pops up click on the modem tab. Change the "Maximum Port Speed" to 4800. Most important under "Dial Control" uncheck the box that says "Wait for dial tone."
4. Plug in for the Magic Jack, just incase you dont know ,should be into the modem and then the MJ. Yes it looks weird since my MJ usb port is right next the the modem on my laptop, so just get a short phone card and plug them in.
5. Go to your MJ software interface and click on "Menu" then click on "Switch to headset" if it does not say that but says switch to phone leave it alone.
6. Go to microsoft word or a pdf file and click print. Select the "fax" printer not your normal printer, and just follow the prompts that come after that, and if you have your speakers sound turned on you will hear a familiar sound. Test your fax here:

Thank-you, your post has helped me. I downloaded and have been trying snappy fax on my vista laptop. I could not get it to send and receive. I set the receive to 4800 but still didn't work. After rereading, it hit me, you said to set MJ to headset. That did the trick. I sent a fax to the HP test number (1-888-473-2963) and I was able to send and receive. I will try it a few more time just to double check.
Since the fax in the laptop (MJ is connected to a desktop) can dial out and my phone still works while MJ menu is set to headset, it makes you wonder why there is a setting for headset and phone when the phone works fully in the headset mode. I'm going to leave it in headset for a while and see if it makes any difference.

GENIUS!!!
I am so excited because I seem to be a lot closer to being able to fax. However, I still cannot receive a fax because only half the page comes through. I was wondering if you have any thoughts? I made sure to follow all the steps to a "T". Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You! :)
I just installed Magic Jack last week and since then I've been searching everywhere to find a solution to the faxing problem, and your post was a tremendous help! For the first time since I've installed the MagicJack I was actually able to send & receive a fax! Woot!
I did have to change a couple of other settings besides the ones you've suggested to make this work, so in case anyone else has the same sort of problem, I thought I'd share what my settings are:
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz Processor
1.5 GB or RAM
Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem
1. I installed a new driver for the modem. The old driver was 2.15.36.2 and the new driver I installed is 2.15.57.4. If you want to update your driver, you can do that here: http://download.cnet.com/Intel-R-537EP- ... ?tag=mncol
2. I changed the Maximum Port Speed to 4800 and unchecked the box saying "Wait for Dial Tone."
3. I then went to the Advanced tab and clicked on Change Default Preferences and set the Data Protocol to Disabled (which turns off Error Correction).
4. On the same page I also changed the Compression setting to Disabled and set the Flow Control to Hardware.
5. I went to the Fax Console and selected Configure Fax and changed my TSID and CSID to my 10-digit fax number.
6. For the faxes to send/receive correctly, I had to leave the MagicJack set on Telephone instead of switching it to headset. Ever time I tried to switch it to headset, the fax failed....but this is an easy enough fix.
7. I've sent several faxes to the FaxBack number you posted (which is definitely a very handy thing to know when you're trying to fix your fax line!) and have successfully sent and received faxes again!

Everyone says to refer to this help thread for assistance on faxing from ur pc. I Dont really see why i have to attach a cable from the Modem to the MF, but w.e.
So can anyone help me? I am having issues with faxing. I have chagned the settings like advised on here. Nothing seems to work. I have used headset and telephone, usually the fax program error's of no answer. Once or twice it started sending the page just as the MJ disconnected the call.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Try testing your fax line by sending a test fax to 1-888-473-2963. If the fax completes successfully, they will also send you a fax back to you can make sure you can receive them successfully as well.
It might be helpful for you to list the details regarding things you've already done and what your current fax configuration is. Otherwise, it's kinda hard to give you suggestions to try if we aren't sure what you have & haven't tried, and what your currents settings are.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for making this topic.
I tried to follow all the steps but I'm experiencing a few hickups. First when I try to lower the modem bps the option to do some is greyed out.
Also I had a few successful fax attempts go through, but most have fail. It seem as if the fax is more than a page then it will not go through, because the MagicJack only stays connected for 30 secs to maybe 50 secs top.
Does anybody have any ideas on how I can un grey the bps box and how to get the magicjack to stay connected for more then a few secs?

Surefire faxing
The single most successful scenario for faxing both in and out is to grab your sip creds and apply them to a PAP2T ATA. This device has enough configurabiity to permit you to help overcome the most problematic issues related to faxing with a digital voice circuit.
Those parameters are packet loss, jitter and packet size.
You will find many excellent articles how to best configure this device for faxing, among them on this link http://www.future-nine.com/faq/index.ph ... hlight=fax
As far as faxing by plugging phone wire from MJ to Fax, good luck with that!!!

Re: Surefire faxing
Thanks for the info. I always planned to get an ATA box but I never did when I couldn't get the SIP cred of one of my magicjack. I bought two at the same time but could only get the correct credentials off onecrackerjack wrote:The single most successful scenario for faxing both in and out is to grab your sip creds and apply them to a PAP2T ATA.
