What to try next?

Post by donschjr »

I can't get my MJ to work properly for 25% of my calls. I have echo, garble or 1 sided audio on some calls. Some calls to some numbers won't work like my son's number wouldn't work for days although I could call from my cell phone with no problem and I often don't hear ringing when I call people even though it rings their phone because they answer but I'll have bad garble when that happens. I have calls that the other person gets put on hold while we are talking. I have 8mbs down and 4mbs up cable that test great at the voip testing site, I've moved my MJ to a dedicated TC and upgraded the TC to SP3 and placed it in the DMZ. I installed a pci Usb card in the TC to insure full power to the MJ. I've tried hardwired and cordless phones. I've even blocked the local proxies that are in large cities like Philly and Baltimore. I'm out of ideas and hope someone has some or I'm going to have to have a landline reinstalled.

Did you try running the downgrade?? MJ used to have it on its server but removed it recently. It was orig for the missing contact list probelm but many people have used it to fix all kinds of problems. It is worth a shot.
Here is the link to the topic. The new link for the downgrade is near the bottom of the topic. Good luck.

What router/software are you running? What are it's QoS settings? Can you give priority to the TC?

the real issue

Post by crackerjack »

1-try your MJ at a friend's house, ideally one who has a different ISP than you.

2-Have you tried the test at http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com.
Pick a location near you thast gives 4 tabs of results.
Pay particulat attention to the MOS values, jitter and packet loss.
Be sure to bookmark it so you can run it when the quality is good and again when your quality is suffering.
I am sure you will detect a relation in the values that reflect the current status of your calls.
If your 'net connection from your current provider is the issue, try to find another broadbant provider that may have more stable service.
Good Luck

Jitter .5
0 packet loss
Moss 4.2

That's the site I've been using to test my connection. My scores on the graph are always above the top line or just slightly below when I test. I have no other broadband options where I live without a live phone line, we can't get dry DSL line in my area. I wouldn't consider DSL in my area anyhow, I had it for 4 years and it was always going out.

I have a Rosewell RNX-easyN4 router. I have Qos turned on with my TC set for unlimited but I don't think it matters since the TC is in the DMZ. My TC is running XPE SP 3 now (just switched from XPE SP 2 with one of Alpman's kits). The only other software running on the TC is the Magicfeatures plugin and Prio so I could set the Magicfeatures plugin to a lower priority to see if it would help.

With those kind of results, its gotta be something freakish.

Check cables, cords, etc.

Try it on another PC, try it at a friend's house

try a different USB hub/connector

approaching wit's end...

I have a desktop with W7 and a laptop with Vista and it's the same with them, but I understand the wits end thing because I'm sure there right now. I've used various ethernet cables and usb outlets with all the different attempts I've made to get it working. I'm considering trying a nettalk unit because I get good quality when I use Xlite with sipgate. Nettalk has a 30 day trial so I guess if it won't work I can get a refund but I'll hate changing phone numbers again this soon.

Forward your MJ number to the NetTalk number, for at least the duration of the 30 day test, then permanently if you keep it. Depending on how much time you have left on your MJ, that could give you a lengthy transition time.

There have been (unconfirmed?) reports that expired MJ's continue to receive and forward calls indefinitely.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

That sounds like it would work but I'd want people using the actual number while testing to make sure it would work right. I thought the MJ was going to be ok with the limited amount I used it the first year but I found that wasn't the case with regular use.

Well the recent update pushed me over the edge and the TK6000 is ordered. I lost all my contacts and running the fix on MJ's site didn't help. After a lot of testing and thinking I've figured out that almost all calls I make to my east have problems and most of my calls in other directions are ok. I've blocked all proxies to the east and it hasn't helped. In another twist I have no problems with calls that I receive from the same people that I have problems calling. The calls from these people are fine. I've decided I've wasted enough time and money and am going to try the TK and if it doesn't work I'll have to go back to a Pots line.

Fooling around with this darn thing has almost become a second career for me. At this point, I view it as a fun, sometimes frustrating hobby. A friend of mine flies radio controlled aircraft for sport. Sometimes he'll crash a $500 airplane and the whole thing gets trashed. My little bundle of joy is cheap entertainment compared to his.

But if I actually had to depend on it for anything, I would have given up long ago. I just get a cheap thrill (Pun intended!) knowing I'm sticking it to Verizon whenever I can.

If you go for the tk6000, please let us know your findings. Thanks!

Latest update did it. I'm done. Now I can't fax, contacts are gone. Service is a maybe at best. Now I am getting misc. BSOD's (win7 x64). Had only a few problems till latest update. Error code in event log says unrecognized disc format. It wont be any better when I smash it I'm sure; but I'll feel better. Going back to my ISP phone, this is no longer worth the trouble of figuring out how to make it work.

Finally received my TK6000 yesterday after the postal service decided they liked the box to sit in Philadelphia for 9 days! First impressions are that this thing smokes MJ. I made calls to all my problem numbers and they were clear as when I had a POTS line. I'll continue testing for a couple weeks but if things continue like this I'll be switching to the TK number very soon.

Final follow up, I've been using the TK for over a week with no problems and great call quality. My MJ unfortunately continues to have the same poor quality and numbers not going through, beeps during calls, echo and garble. I'll leave the MJ up and running for people that don't have my new number but when it expires I'm done with it.

Glad to hear your tk6000 is working well. Although I just re-upped both my MJ's for another year, I haven't been using them for awhile since I've been using my Google Voice with sipgate.

Today, I had a friend of mine call me Skype-to-Skype. He's not really into the voip thing, but he wanted to try out the Skype beta with Ubuntu on his netbook.

Very impressive. Built in camera and mike over a wireless connection and it was flawless! Not sure I want people looking at my smiling mug first thing in the morning, or any other time, as far as that goes, but I was amazed at how well the darn thing worked over a wireless connection.

Skype works great for making calls to others with Skype but they charge to call a landline so I would probably use Sipgate for that. I actually have an ata set up at my Daughters home (cell phone only household) using google voice and sipgate for my Grandsons to call me and the voice quality is great.

That's exactly the set up I went to and I have to agree. I find it's even acceptable for business calls, although I 'm not sure I would recommend it. Even when I wasn't using GV with sipgate, my monthly expense was around $3; certainly a lot better than Ma Bell!
