MagicJack with Skype and/or Disable Dial-tone

Post by wornways »

Hi folks,

I can use MagicJack with Skype--or should I say I can use Skype with MagicJack, but after about 2 minutes my call is interrupted by the dial tone and I have to hit a key on the phone pad to get rid of it, which of course brings up the "If you want to dial a number" message as well.

I've looked though the two or three total settings that seem to be available in the MagicJack app, but I can find nothing that enables a "free"/"open"/"no dial tone" mode that would let me just use my cordless phone so I could talk over Skype. Is there a way to do this?

I'm using MagicJack on MacOS. The reason I want to use it with Skype is because when I talk MagicJack to MagicJack with my wife who is in another country, I'm constantly cutting out (though I can hear her fine). But when we talk using Skype, there is never any cutting out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure how to do this on MacOS, but on a WindowsPC you would disable Autorun for the Magicjack app so that when the dongle is plugged in it does not run Magicjack app. You may also force Quit the Magicjack app once it is loaded and the dongle should still work for Skype. Good Luck with it.

antman1,

Thank you. This was the missing piece of information. I was looking for a way to configure the MJ application when I should have tried shutting it down altogether. Once I quit the MJ app, I was able to use Skype without a problem. Then once the call was over, I just restart MJ in order to be able to make and receive calls.

Not the perfect solution, since I won't be able to know if I'm getting a call on the MJ line while talking on Skype, but sufficient for now.

Thanks again.
