Does MJ "expire" a year after purchase, or activat
I have a friend whose MJ won't install. His computer displays the error, "MagicJack is not supported by your version of Windows. Please check http://www.magicjack.com/requirements for more information. Detected version: Win NT 5.1 build 2600 [0.0]"
The strange thing is, he's running XP Pro on his laptop, not NT.
He bought the MJ just over a year ago and wonders if it's "stale-dated". Does that happen? (I would have thought it would get beyond this 'warning' before bombing out, if that were the case.....or that it would give a warning worded to the effect that "your MagicJack requires renewal" or something.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, folks.
Michael

I have heard of this happening before. What Service Pack is he running?
If 1 or 2 have him update to SP3. IF he is running SP3, it is possible only a reinstall of XP will fix it as something is affecting the way XP is being seen.
Has he tried closing all programs ( including Anti virus, anti spyware, etc..) prior to trying to install MJ?? CTL SHIFT ESC , processes tab to see what is running.

Problems......
I'll give him a call, Joe, and have him try all your suggestions. (Think he's running SP2)
He's not the most "computerly" inclined......but we'll try doing the telephone surgery routine.
Thanks again. (I'll be back if we bomb out.)
BTW, what about that "expiry" factor? Should he be able to at least install a 14 month old MJ that's never even been installed before?

If I had to guess, and I am making an educated guess here from all I know about MJ, I would say as long as it has never been plugged into a PC and registered it should still be a "virgin". Again I am making an educated guess........
Anyone else is free to chime in here if I am wrong and knew/knows someone in the same situation.
Let me know what happens...

Non-installer
Good point, guys; must be one of the other problems mentioned.
We'll work on it.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Does MJ "expire" a year after purchase, or act
I know this is an outdated post but someone may have the same problem so here are a few ideas that have worked:Semi-retired wrote:I have a friend whose MJ won't install. Try this:
Method 1:
Unregister and then reregister Windows Installer service.
To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click “Start”, type “cmd” in the Start search box.
b. Right-click “cmd” and select “Run as administrator”.
c. Type the following commands and hit Enter after each command:
msiexec /unreg
msiexec /regserver
Method 2:
Check for the status of Windows Installer service and make sure that it’s set to Automatic.
a. Click “Start”.
b. Type “services.msc” in the Start search box and hit “Enter”.
c. Double-click the “Windows Installer” service.
d. Set the “Startup type” of Windows Installer to “Manual”.
e. Click “Start” to start the service. Note down the error message if any.
f. Click “OK”
Method 3:
Empty user and system "temp" folders.
a. Click Start, type %systemdrive%\temp and hit Enter. Select all and empty this folder.
b. Click Start, type %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp and hit Enter.
c. Select all and empty this folder, too.

"Stale dated" Not that I know of - I have installed used (beyond subscription expiry) and new magicjacks (sat on a shelf since don't know when but got them cheap as inventory reduction).

Is there any way to check this? I don't see it on the packaging or in the TOS.black_icon wrote:You need to make sure to register your MJ device within a year because if you'll do that after a year, your device will be void and good as USELESS.
If true - Is there any way to check the date code on the device?

Try to check www.magicJack.com/tos and refer to article number 8.murugan wrote:Is there any way to check this? You're absolutely right - the TOS does say so in article 8. Is there any way to check the "date code" or should I just plug it in and wait for a successful instal or a reject. Any help in determining this without opening the package would be helpful.black_icon wrote:Try to check www.magicJack.com/tos and refer to article number 8.murugan wrote:Is there any way to check this? 1. Plug in the MJ plus device
2. You need to select where you bought your MJ Plus
3. Click on "Or login to existing magicjack account" found at the top right corner of the page.
4. You need to use your current email and password.
5. You will see 2 options, you will need to select the 2nd one.
a) Register as a new device"
b) "Replace a current magicJack (your subscription and remaining year/years will be transferred to your new device, and your old magicJack will be expired)"
6. Select your old phone number
7. Agree to the TOS and the next following pages will present you with the usual upsells (add years/IPP/Insurance).
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Once service is transferred to new MJ PLUS, the standard MJ will be deactivated, and will be rendered useless, cannot be used anymore
