Whole new issue!! No more beeping, just an echo!!

Post by Barbsplace »

On Sunday I had an incoming call from my brother... long distance.
Usually, there's a beep, followed by beep 2 in a minute or so and then a disconnect... Not so this week... Instead, we completed our long conversation with no beeps or disconnects. But, what we did have, was an
echo of everything I said. My brother didn't hear it, just me, and I can live
with it since it's quite low in volume. One new and possible factor is that we had out cable company upgrade our entire system... Does anyone relate to this??

Hello "Barbsplace" and welcome to this forum!

Unfortunately, many things can cause echo when it comes to the MJ. I will list some of the items I have experienced along with some fixes I have tried. Some of these fixes are more involved than others, so perhaps try the simplest first. Also please note that I have done all of these fixes and yet still on occasion have some echo. It's just not as noticeable and is due primarily to my ISP's available bandwidth (more on this below). You can do a "search" in this forum for "Sound Quality", "Echo", etc. as there have been tons of posts in regards to this issue. Also please visit http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MagicJack. A user of this forum gathered many of the best available fixes into a comprehensive one stop location. There is some great info there.

I have cable Internet service so I can relate to your situation. I noticed that low Internet bandwidth at times causes moderate echo on my end of the conversation. This most notably happens when many users in my neighborhood are online. This makes less bandwidth available, as cable is a shared resource. This drop in bandwidth seems to happen mostly around weekday noon hours, sometimes on weekends and in the early evening when everyone gets home from work and jumps online to check emails, etc. Make a note of the times and days you experience this the most. This can help you aviod using the phone during these busy times and may also aid your service provider if you contact them to see what they can do to improve your service.

Some things to try:

- A powered USB hub plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the back of your computer.

- Go into your MJ's softphone display. Locate the following settings in upper right corner of your softphone: <Menu > <Volume/Headset Control…> and lower the Speaker and Microphone levels via the sliders on the bottom (you might adjust these a little each time, then see if call quality improves).

- Try setting the magicjack.exe process to a higher priority in Windows "Control Panel". To do this press (Ctrl+Alt+Del), then locate the "Process" tab. Look for the "magicjack.exe" process. Then right click on it, and "Set Priority" to "High" and "Yes" to confirm. This allowa magicjack more access to your computers resources. Please note that this will need to be done each time your restart your computer. Others on this site recommended a program called "Prio" which automatically does this for you. (it's avaialbale as a free download for personal use). It can be found here http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html

- Reduce the number of programs you have running on your computer while trying to use the MJ.

- Several forum members have recommended locating and changing your MJ's Proxy Server to another proxy(this last one is a bit more involved). I have not tried this yet as the other fixes have me quite happy with my MJ.

I hope these suggestions can improve your call quality. Good luck!

I had the same problem but reversed. When I made calls to someone in my area code I had a horrible echo but they heard nothing. Calls to other area codes didn't have the echo.

I tried all sorts of things and spent a lot of time with MJ chat - all of which was utterly useless. The chat twits kept telling me that they were reporting the problem to the "engineers" and that it should be resolved in 24 hours or 48 hours or 72 hours (the time was different everytime I complained).

I forced MJ to use a different proxy and the problem went away.
