Horrible static when I dial out, but not to my cell phone

Post by qpribyl »

I recently got a Magic Jack and was very excited, but it's been malfunctioning regularly and I can't figure out why. I've tried cleaning and switching USB ports, but it doesn't seem to help. I've done several quality checks to my cell phone's voicemail and the call is clear without any static at all. Whenever I dial other people though, they hear nothing but static and can barely recognize my voice. Can somebody please help?

Thank you!

I am noticing this same issue. In fact, the last occurrence was someone called me and left a message on MJ and I couldn't even understand it.
This is happening very frequently for me. So I changed USB ports and rebooted. We'll see how that works.

Hello "qpribyl", welcome to the forum! Please bear with my questions as many things could be at play here. If you can provide a few more details it will definitely help us narrow down the issue(s) at play.

- Which operating system are you using and do you have the latest updates?

- What type of internet connection (cable/DSL,etc.?

-Router/brand, and does it have the latest firmware?

-Which type of phone are you using? 2.4GHz, 5.8ghz, DECT 6.0 or headset?

-Are you using the short USB cable that came with the MJ?

-Do you have a powered USB hub plugged into a USB 2.0 jack on the back of your computer?

Thanks!

[Edit] - Just realized the initial post was from last month. "qpribyl" are you still interested in finding a solution?

Okay so I changed the usb port (powered usb hub) of my MJ and until I did so, I received unrecognizable voice mails from my test calls. Now all seems well. I am finding though that I am having to do this more frequently than I would like to.

Howdy gots2go;

How close is your phones base station to your computer? Just curious because radio interference from computers does mess with cordless phone systems. I am using a 5.8GHz vTech and noticed big improvements after I switched to a longer cord and moved the phone further away.

My base is about 8-10 ft from the computer. I had 5.8 and switched to 6.0 Dect within the last 2 months. What is interesting is that I could call out with no apparent issues, yet when I would get a call from a cell phone that's when I got the problems. So now I'll see how long this works for me.

I've got a 2.4 GHz phone sitting almost next to my wireless router and most of the time its fine. The big issue is what channel the router is set to and is the phone "smart" about picking a clear channel to use or will it just jam the wireless network.

Great point for sure hsweiss.

I went through several routers tweaking router channels for what seemed like an eternity. In the end though oddly enough moving the silly phone did the trick. A D-link I had was horrible on most all channels, so for giggles, I pulled out an older Netgear b/g I had and it works great (other than occasional "atmospherics" messing with it).

Gots2go, have you looked into changing your MJ's proxy server?

Hsweiss, have your tried this route and if so did it work for you?

hsweiss,

Sorry, I just saw another post you made and you answered my question.

So changing proxy resolved some big issues. Good to know!

Check out the MJ wiki http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MagicJack it has all the info in one place for changing proxy servers and also other problems that are common with MJ.

Got a call today and while they could hear me, all I could hear was static. So I entered into chat with MJ Tech Support. They had be do this:

Right click on My Computer
Select Properties
Click the Advance tab
Click Settings in the Performance section
Click the Advance tab
Select Background Services in the Processor Scheduling section
Click Apply and then OK to close all screen Computer property screens

Go to Menu in MagicJack
Select Advance and then Restart

Make a call to test.

So far this has been working for me. Hope it helps others.
