Windows 7 & magicJack - Get it working in 10 easy steps!

I have two different magicJacks, both about 1.5 years old. And, I have two Windows 7 machines, one an Acer Aspire Netbook, and one Compaq Presario notebook. The Netbook runs Windows 7 Starter, while the Compaq runs Windows 7 Ultimate.

Both mJs could be plugged into either machine. I'd get an unreadable CD drive, and the "magicJack (Vista only)" drive. And, some drivers would install. (3 drivers install on the netbook, while 6 or 7 seem to install on the Compaq).

Then, nothing. An Autoplay window might come up if I hadn't disabled, but nothing else would happen.

I downloaded and ran the Windows 7 update from magicJack.com, and that did nothing to solve my problems. In fact, the update told me my mJ wasn't connected to my computer, or didn't need the update.

I couldn't start, or do anything with the dang things, and I was annoyed. "Tech Support" just wanted me to format the drive and reload. But, first, I tried one last thing. And it's what worked.

So, here's what I did:

1) Plug mJ into computer with Win7. Wait 2 or 3 minutes for all the drivers to load.
2) Go to magicjack.com, click on "Customer Care/Live Agent" on the lower left.
3) IGNORE the Windows 7 update graphic. It didn't do anything for me and my two mJs.
4) Click "Get Live Help Here", or whatever overly wordy thing it says
5) At the very top, click "Click Here" to get the latest updates. This downloads upgrade.exe to your desktop. This is NOT the same update as the Win7 update they list. It's much bigger, for one...
6) Double-click the upgrade.exe and wait for the magic.
7) If your machines are like mine, then all should begin to work.
8.) Unplug your mJ, wait a few moments, then plug back in. Now, unless you've disabled AutoPlay, as talked about in the other thread, you'll get an AutoPlay window. Ignore it by closing it with the X, or hitting Esc on your keyboard.
9) Double-click the magicJack icon that was kindly added to your desktop, and all should be working!
10) Congratulate yourself on a job well done!

I followed the 10 steps very carefully however my magic jack telephone option is not available. The speaker and mic option is selected and work fine but the telephone option is not available. Telephone is plugged in and gets a dial tone but not able to make any calls. Help!?

I had been grappling with this for several hours until I came across this forum and did a search for windows 7 issues.

I followed these 10 steps for my 32-Bit Windows 7 Ultimate install but it still did not start the program nor install the desktop icon when the upgrade completed.

I checked the install folder (below) and noticed that after running the upgrade.exe program, a new Upgrade folder now appeared at the location below.

So to make it work, I had to go to the folder below and ran the setup1.exe program in order to make the installation run.

C:\Users\***\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\Upgrade\

Once I ran that, it then created the desktop icon, started the program etc and I was able to register, get a number, run a test phone call etc.

Hope this helps someone else.

EDIT: OK, that didn't work either. Once I unplugged the MJ and plugged it back in, it says "Download in progress, please do not unplug". Then nothing.

I check the running processes and noticed that when you plug it in, it then runs autorunu.exe which resides on the device. That then spawns both mjsetup.exe and magicJackSplash.exe. Then it just disappears.

If I run the previously created desktop icon (which runs magicJackLoader.exe), then the same thing happens in that it tries to run those aforementioned programs again.

After several hours of screwing around with this, I figured out what the problem was.

I noticed that each time I plugged in the MJ, nothing would happen. Apart from the Autorun popping up with two entries. So I disabled Autorun in group policy editor.

I would then manually run the desktop MJ shortcut and nothing would happen. The splash screen would just sit there cycling through the images in the gif file.

So I ran Process Explorer and killed both MJ programs and decided to observe the behavior by starting the desktop shortcut again.

That shortcut is running the MagicJackLoader.exe program. What that does is run mjsetup.exe which then runs magicJackSplash.exe. Thats where it gets stuck.

Apparently the latter was hanging because the MJ interface never appeared since the MagicJack.exe program was never executed. Though the MJ appeared to work just fine since I could get a dial tone just by picking up the phone - I just couldn't get the interface display.

So I Googled magicJackSplash and found this page which shows how to disable the MJ splash screen.

Using the manual method on that page, I changed the shortcut to match those settings and the MJ interface now starts just fine since it is running MagicJack.exe instead of MagicJackLoader.exe

Wow. And I thought I had troubles. Well, glad you were able to make it work. I should note that I never tried to actually register my units on Windows 7 boxes, as they were already registered and active. I was just trying to USE the mJs on my boxes. Perhaps something in that process thwarted your efforts. Or maybe there's another problem completely that I did not see on my two test machines.

Holy Smokes!....My contacts and call list have been missing since upgrading to Win 7 yesterday....this fixed it. I swear I tried the non "win 7 update"...but it worked this time... No clue why...but many thanks Guy!

Tried for almost 6 hours finaly got it working thanks to this post. Its 2am now. the tech at mj couldnt even get it thanks!!!!!

Dunno why I couldn't find this link earlier. It would not pop up on any of my google searches. I figured out this fix myself... dunno how it worked or why I tried it but it worked. Searched to see if my setup1.exe fix was found elsewhere.

I can't get past step 5 I don't know if the website has been updates since then.
