Problem with MagicJack and AT&T DSL

Post by revolutiondj »

I have a problem with my DSL and I am hoping its an easy fix. I recently installed AT&T DSL. I have it wired to one jack and my magicjack is wired in to all the other jacks in the house. However whenever the phone is used the internet connection goes out. I was just wanting some input to see if maybe the DSL signal might somehow be getting to the other jacks and I need to install the filters or if maybe there is some other issue. Thanks and I hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend!

When I had DSL years ago, I had to have a filter for each phone plugged into the wall, and in the correct jack on each filter. I'm guessing you've already checked to see that your MJ is being filtered correctly also (in the jack with the phone icon)?

The filter accepts the two frequencies involved in simultaneous transmissions of your digital signal (PC), and your slower audio signal (phones). Both frequencies must be separated through all the phone jacks you actively use (those jacks not used don't need a filter), otherwise there could be problems. I'm guessing that's what's happening, but I'm not 100% positive.

Like Tom said PLUS be sure if you are using a cordless phone it isnt 2.4 mhz as it can cause your router to screw up.
ALSO you may want to contact ATT and ask if they can installa NID outside in your phone box. I had this done and I dont need ANY filters on any of my wall jacks plus one of the jacks, near my PC of course, is ONLY for DSL...

You should have gotten DSL without a phone line from them.
That's what I have and it's wonderful!

Eventually I did that with my DSL after I got my MJ. I got "naked" or dry loop DSL.. BUT in my case they let me be able to continue receive calls on my phone line ( but not make them other than 911) but I only pay for DSL.. AND I locked in for 2 years ( 6mps down 1 mp up) for $29.99 a month. Can't beat that with a stick!!

Update:

I have just run a wire from the MJ to one phone only. The MJ is completely disconnected from the house wiring.

I just made a phone call and I still lost my internet connection. I have the AT&T wireless gateway.

Is there maybe some setting on the gateway I need to change.

Thanks,
Mike

Update again lol.

I found out the problem was the fact that I have a 2.4ghz cordless phone and must have been on a close channel with the gateway. I changed the channel on the gateway and everything is fine.

So Joe you were right on with your suggestion.

Thanks for the help all and have a good holiday weekend.

Yep that will do it every time :) Just make sure your router is not set to AUTO for finding a channel as it could very well go back to that same channel which caused you problems in the first place. Of course if your phone is the type to scan for open channels you at least know what to check if it happens again.. OR buy a new Dect 6.0 phone ( I am using a 5.8mhz and have no problems at all)

Glad to have helped..
