Local Number Porting - does anyone still care?

Features that are coming "soon". Area Codes, Caller ID blocking, Follow me, etc.

Local Number Porting - does anyone still care?

Post by mikesil »

There's a few of us (like me) who really cared about Local Number Porting because we were holding on to our overpriced landlines until we could switch everything over. I use the past tense because I no longer care when, or if, Magicjack ever really does it. There's no way that I would ever trust them with anything as important as management of all my phone communications.

After August 10 came and went I ported my number to Call Centric from which I now easily control every aspect of how the phones operate. I can forward calls to my Magicjack number or anywhere else. The website is clear, concise, and efficient, and for those operations which do require human assistance (like number porting) the responses are prompt, to the point, and helpful. Compare this with Dan and his Army of the Clueless. Sure it costs --- all of $6 per month plus a couple of pennies per call (including overseas).

I'll keep Magicjack as a backup because it's virtually free and that's what it's worth. The website still says number porting will be available first week in August and that they are "working hard" to bring it about. It stands as a visible symbol of the disregard that Dan has for his existing customers while he pumps out a quarter million new units every month. When the sales and revenue start to slow down do you think he will spend money on customer service and product improvement? Maybe, but I rather doubt it. My guess is that we'll find him on a beach somewhere.

Dan's avocation

runs more toward chasing around to various race tracks while his prized thoroughbreds compete.
Don't hold your breath on LNP as it would belie their status as an 'advanced data services supplier' and make them fall under regulatory control as a real telco. If that ever happened they would be subject to rules that dictate collection of USF and other fees as well as preclude them from selectively denying interconnects to rural and other high tarriff locations, as well as hijacking calls to their proprietary conference service.
Not that there's anything wrong with that!
Good Luck

Glad to hear you like Callcentric. They are without a doubt one of the best voip companies around. As Crackerjack stated LNP will most likely never happen with MJ. I'm going to see if I can actually port my second MJ's number to Callcentric early next year. If they kill ata usage it may be even sooner.

He lives on the beach.

I personally do not care about number porting any more.

Number porting coming Nov 1, 2010

Post by bruno »

The Magic Jack website was just updated today (Sept 27) saying that number porting will be available on Nov 1st. Go to the website, click on FAQs/Knowledgebase, then click on 'Can I transfer or "port" my...'

Maybe they will be able to meet this new deadline.

I'm not a rich person, and have little extra money to spare. But I will bet anyone reading this $100 that the November 1st date will come and go with no portability available. (Disclaimer: this is not a gambling site, any wagering is being done for entertainment purposes only. Offer not available to Dan whats-his-name or close relatives, genetic or otherwise, employees of MagicJack or any of it's worldwide subsidiaries, as they may be dealing with insider information. Void where prohibited by law or common sense. Offer limited to one bet per household and expires at 23:00 GMT 9-28-2010  )
