Phone keypad not dialing

Post by river »

It was working the other day, but, now I can't dial from my phone keypad. Can make calls from softphone, but that is not convenient.

BTW - I'm really glad that I found this forum because the MagicJack website is heavily lacking costumer support.

Can anyone help me with this. I can get incoming calls, can call out from softphone, but cannot dial from my phone. I did work in the past, I have no idea why its not working now.

No, I've tried different phones, restarted the computer and the modem, I've even tried on a different computer and internet service.

Sounds like your magicJack is busted, if I remember correctly I think the DTMF decoder is in the hardware.

Try a powered USB hub. I'm not sure why the problem would start out of blue, but powered hubs are reported to fix a lot of strange problems.

I don't have a powered hub, this is really frustrating.

I had the same problem, I updated the magicjack software. Go to the main website, and download it. It fixed the problem after a update was complete and re-started the software.

I am encountering the same thing. The unit is brand new and worked for 1 day. Its not the DTMF detector because if you use the softphone and dial the 1st digit, you can then dial the rest of the numbers using the phone. This is really strange! It seems that the current software of magicjack doesnt detect the offhook to allow the dialtone detection to start working?

1. I just tried that, dialed 1 with the softphone keypad and the rest of the number with the real phone key pad. The dial tone did not come back while I was dialing but I did not get though to a destination ether.

Phone pad

Post by RustyDaw »

Welcome to the club. My MJ has had this problem for months! I have spent hours with MJ UNTech support only to get nowhere fast. I have watched this site for weeks, tried various fixes, still nothing. Got the powered hub, nothing. Changed phones, nothing changed.
Strange thing when I pick up my portable phone, select the line to use, the softpad is activated (pops up on computer screen), I have dial tone, but when I press the portable phone pad nothing happens, retains dial tone. I can use the soft pad to dial out, and the call goes through. Sometimes the folks on the other end of the call can hear me plainly others complain the call is faint.
I even got a new router D-Link model DIR-655; phones are Panasonic KXTG6500 and a load computer! The system worked so well as my line 2 on the phones, I canceled one of our Verizon lines; then this problem popped up! Still availble to make ld calls and is saving me money, but it would be nice to dial out from another portable in the house. Maybe one day things will get better!

I have two magicjacks one for laptop and one for desktop the desktop magicjack has same problem certain numbers on the dialpad using pasasonic phone will not work eg:#4,6 ect and maybe a couple other numbers. Now when I use the other magicjack the one I use for the laptop put it in the desktop computer everything is all well, all numbers work dialing using the panisonic phone. either way the magicjack with the dialing problem has the same problem no matter which computer I use so my conclusion is its the magicjack itself.

I'm really frustrated with this situation, calling from the softphone works but is not convenient for me. I'd like to be able to call from the real phone.

Add me to the club. I've tried it with several phones, 3 desktops and 2 laptops, same problem. Support told me to try a powered usb hub, no go. Sound quality has degraded as well. Very frustrating.

Does anyone know how long the warranty is on this thing?

Things are hit and miss.

1. It depends on the phone. The MJ device sometimes just does not output enough voltage to make phones work.

2. Randomness. Sometimes a phone will work, then not work, then will work again. For me, if I can't get it to work, I hang up, pick up the phone and try again. If not, hang up and repeat until it does work.

I have not tried a USB hub yet. I do own one but don't use it all the time. I might try it to see if I get any better luck with it.

I don't know what to say. It worked in the beginning with the same phones and computer that it's not working with now.

A side note, at some point I changed my MJ phone number. I can't remember if the problem started right after that. Could that have something to do with it?

I bit the bullet and bought a new unit, contacted support (which I now regret) to have my number transferred to the new unit. Works like a charm so obviously it's a flaw with the MJ and not my systems or phones.

Now, the reason for the regret... if I had just registered the new one with a new phone number I would have gotten 12 months of service, but since I wanted to retain my old number my original expiration date applies. So in a few months I'll have to pay for yet another year. When I questioned this I was told that it's "company policy". I call BS.

So heads up if you plan on doing the same thing.

A customer satisfaction guarantee is offered for the device and service for the first 30 days. Other than that, the device and service have no warranty beyond that.

can't dial with a phone

Post by suptclark »

:D I read the instructions carefully on the web site and found you can simply ask to escalate the chat and they will. I asked for a replacement unit and explained that I have tried rebooting and two computers and two phones etc. AND I AM TO RECIVE MY REPLACEMENT IN 3 TO 5 BUSINESS DAYS. HOORAY!!

What does "escalate the chat" mean?

can't dial- escalate this chat

Post by suptclark »

When you get a representative on the chat. after a few questions you just type in "please escalate this chat" and they will pass you up the food chain.
I told the second rep that I had chatted twice and rebooted and done all the things they ask you to do. I then asked for a replacement unit. After they told me they were checking my log records and I supplied my order number etc. I was told to expect my new unit in three to five business days. They explain you have return the unit within two weeks with the RMA number they supply. This morning I got emailed that the unit was shipped.

copy of replacement procedures on magicfix faq

Post by suptclark »

In order to receive a replacement for your magicJack, you have to chat with one of our Live Agents and go through trouble shooting before a replacement can be issued.

Once the replacement has been issued, you will receive an email with an RMA number and return information for the original magicJack. The original magicJack must be in our hands within two (2) weeks, in order for you not to be charged for the replacement magicJack. Please make sure to include the email with your RMA number when returning the original magicJack.

There USED to be a setting to adj that on your my.magicjack.com page. After the last update that setting is no longer there. I can only suggest you contact online support as MABYE now they are able to make that adj for you on their end. Can't hurt to try...
