Ok, I'll play along... so, if you're not storing it on the flash drive, you have to be storing it somewhere else, right?. You can't store it in RAM because it wouldn't hold after a power cycle. If not a USB stick, then has to be some other sort of added storage media like a Compact Flash card or SD chip.

Well, at this point I'll call it BS, because he claims to not ever store anything to the flash drive. Think about that for a minute... there's really only two accessible forms of memory in the TC's, flash and RAM. RAM is volatile and won't retain anything after being power cycled. So, what's left? BIOS memory? I highly doubt he's able to write and store much to that area - and, he claims he's not doing any remapping, so can't be writing to the MJ itself. Not using flash, not using RAM, not using any form of added memory stick, and no remapping. So, where's he writing to?
The sellers on eBay that offer "Worry Free magicJack Updates" include the following in their listing info:

So, this is how it's done. Adding another form of memory storage, a Microdrive. The OP is more than likely splitting hairs when he says "No other external storage device is used". Perhaps by installing the Microdrive internally, he feels able to make the claim about having nothing external.Worry FREE magicJack Updates! Using a Microdrive will eliminate the need for the Write Filter. Unlike the Flash Drive, you DO NOT have to manually save magicJack updates anymore because it will be saved automatically to the Microdrive for a totally worry free magicJack operation 24/7. Spinning Drive Yes but noise? NO Sir! Use a stethoscope just to hear it spinning!
Let me make this clear.....I am using a stock HP T5720 w/512/MB ATA Flash drive & 512MB DDR RAM......NO other microdrives, No flash drives, etc, etc, is being used.......
Just because you can't understand it, doesn'n mean it can't be done.
Let me ask this..............
When you inserted your magicJack into your thin client for the first time, it checks to see if the magicJack software is saved to the drive( be it a hard drive, flashdrive, whatever...)if it doen't see it, it downloads the files...........ok...think real hard...........where does it store it temporarly? I don't mean save(writing to the whatever drive). Where is it stored?
The answer is quite simple...

He says he's never writing to the flash, so he has to be simply increasing the size of the RAM Drive and letting magicJack install therein - which means magicJack would install itself as a brand new installation everytime the thin client is booted.roc1479 wrote:He's probably using ewf overlays to accomplish this.
Using overlays, as poster roc1479 suggested.
More info from Microsoft about overlays and EWF here: http://tinyurl.com/27jvsqwEWF Overlay: EWF protects the contents of a volume by redirecting all write operations to another storage location. This location is called an overlay. An EWF overlay can be in RAM, or on another disk partition.
Should we try to figure this out, Will it help the majority of T/C users ?
I just increased my ramdrive a bit to help with the larger size of the new versions, but it is still loaded on my drive. all is well on mine (for now).

I think the board went down hard sat/sun, and probably lost some posts cause some of mine are gone.Wow. Looks like we lost a few days of replies here. Posts from Oct 7, 8, and 9 are gone.
I have thought about using one of the dual CF/ IDE setups (like the one in my alpman t5520) with a CF on one and MD on the other and trying some remapping, but it becomes cost prohibitive quickly. I like the flexibility that the MD offers, but not the failure rate. I thought about just putting a CF in there and seing how long it takes it to fail. If it would last a year I would probably consider it.
