I Think I Broke My magicJack [Resolved]

Post by MacGregor »

I had an issue earlier with the MJ - I was getting the "Warning: You must plug magicjack into USB" error. I tried the upgrade as mentioned on the magicFix site - it didn't work. I tried the MJ removal tool with the hopes of re-installing - it didn't work. I tried stopping the processes in Task Manager, unplugging and re-plugging the magicJack back in - it didn't work. I went back to the magicFix site and the last option it recommended was to format the magicJack "G" drive, and run the upgrade. I did so, but the upgrade won't re-install. I get the "Lucky You - Upgrading Now" screen, followed by the "Warning: You must plug magicjack into USB" error message. No other error messages have come up, and the computer is recognizing the dongle as the "G" drive (it's just an empty flash drive now). Any ideas?

Edit to add: I also tried the magicJack recovery tool. It stated "No device found".

MacGregor... fwiw, I have two MJ's. The newer one would regularly malfunction on startup. For a while, the blue led would come on and then go off. Later, it would come on but not connect. After one "Lucky You" upgrade, the darn thing wouldn't work at all.

Long story longer, I contacted Support hoping I could replace it. The first Support person really gave it the good old college try but couldn't help. It was escalated to "Hero". I really had to laugh out loud but by golly, he got the darn thing to work. We went in and fooled around with some USB device settings; I don't remember exactly what.

I may be the only person on the forum to have kind words for MJ Support. However, both dongles are now working great, after I gave up in disgust recently (see Rants & Raves).

Good luck!

A little off topic, but I should give a plug here for redpepper's Skypejack and Xlitejack. Even when the dongle wouldn't work with MJ, both plugins worked great using my Skype and sipgate accounts. This was a great workaround for me when Magicjack was giving me fits.

Thanks. It had been working fine - no regular issues. At this point, though, the problem is that there is no more data on the USB dongle (it has been formatted) and I'm unable to re-install the firmware. I'm going to try a few solutions and I'll post the results.

I deleted the mjusbs folder as well as the registry entry to no avail. I also tried uninstalling the drivers for both the TigerJet USB and cdrom. That didn't work either.

How do I get the firmware back on the USB device??? Everytime I run the upgrade it starts with "Lucky You: Upgrading Now" and ends with the "Warning: You must plug magicjack into USB" error.

With the help of magicJack tech support, I was able to [fairly quickly] get the problem resolved. The entire process took about 20-30 minutes. Here is a copy of the chat session. I added the names of the links in parenthesis.

Matt: Hello Darene
Darene: Hello, how may I help you?
Darene: How are you today Matt?
Matt: I have an issue with my magicJack. I hope you can help.
Darene: yes may i know what is that please?
Matt: While performing some routine maintenence I accidentally deleted the USB and CD drives allocated and used by magicJack. At that point I started receving the "Warning: You must plug magicJack into USB" error message. I unplugged the USB and plugged it back in - the same error message appeared. I tried a different USB port - the same error message appeared. I then attempted an upgrade, but still got the "Warning: You must plug magicJack into USB" error message. As suggested on the magicFix site, I tried the stopping the processes in Task Manager - it didn't work. The last option on the magicFix site, which was to format the magicJack USB device didn't work. I then tried to run the magicJack Recovery tool, but it gives an error message "No Device Found". I then tried deleting the registry entry then unplugging and plugging the USB device back in - it didn't work.
Darene: i see.

MacGregor... glad that appeared to work for you! I had much of a similar experience. It is a little tedious, but what the heck, you're back in business.

It actually wasn't that bad. Much of the time I was just waiting for things to download, run, etc. I think the customer service may actually be a little....dare I say it?......better. (at least more than it has been in the past).
