Five Minute Limit For Canadian Subscribers??

Post by peterd2010 »

Hand up everyone with a Canadian Number who is finding that most outgoing calls drop the other party's voice after five minutes? ME!!! ME!!! ME!!!

If you're a Canadian subscriber having htis problem, please add your voice to this thread so that they can take notice of us and FIX it. They're busy selling Magicjack in Canada through Wal-mart and The Source and London Drugs. Maybe those companies want to read about how many Canadians are having problems and reconsider whether they want to carry the product. Maybe that's what it will take to get MagicJack to FIX the problem.

Yeah. I'm one very P-Oed Canuck. :-)

Here's the facts as I know them:
1) The problem began about a month ago (after 4-5 months of no problems)
2) Most calls (more than 90%), maybe ALL calls, initiated by the phone connected to the MJ unit result in the other party's incoming audio being dropped after five minutes. they can still hear me, but I can't hear them.
3) Incoming calls are NEVER affected.
4) I haven't done much testing with non-Canadian #s because I don't call non-Canadian #s a lot so I'll say "local (areas code 204) numbers I call"are affected, and I suspect that others numbers are affected as well.
5) NONE of the countless hours of changes to firewall and security settings, disabling virus software, updating Magicjack, changing DNS entries, or rebooting router or PC have done a single thing to fix the problem.

I believe that MJ support can't admit they don't know what the issue is so they waste your time making you jump through one desperate tech hoop after another until you get tired of it or run out of time and then they figure it's fixed. Clue: IT'S NOT!

Here too London exchange 226. Wonder if telcos have been losing money to MJ and have banded together to offer this 5 minute special. Arggghhhh

This might fix your problem

Post by Luxfestinus »

1.) Create a google voice account

2.) Enter (register) your magicjack number into your google voice account.

3.) At https://www.google.com/voice/#inbox Enter the Canadian number to call into upper left hand box in the "Place a call" menu.

4.) Your magicjack phone should ring so answer it. You should hear it ringing on the other end to the Canadian number.

Magic Jack should only see the U.S. google voice number and as it is also an incoming call so all should be well. Reply if it works. Thanks.

It has been brought to my attention that you will need a U.S. IP address to create a Google Voice account. Use http://download.cnet.com/hotspot-shield/
or http://openvpn.net/ to possibly get a US ip address. With openvpn.net you may need to disconnect and reconnect until a US IP address pops up.

FYI, It seems google voice is not available to canada. To get around this you need to download an application which will provide you with a US IP address.

A conspiracy by the Canadian telcos to interfere with MJ? I seriously doubt it. the CRTC would have a field day with that one. I'm going to say "No. It's an MJ issue" and hope they don't use it as an excuse for their crappy service to Canadian subscribers.

Any others? Please post your Area Code and Exchange. Mine's (204) 388 (XXXX)

Ive had the exact same problem with both of my MJ's 604-800 and 514-400... Tech support reset my account, went through the network settings crap, they didn't seem to understand that no settings have changed on my end and it just magically stops working at 5minutes. No changes to my setup will fix this, its their end...

Their tech support is absolutely useless, and angers me whenever I have to get them online...

I was a very happy MJ customer until this crap...

5 minute crash & burn

Post by mzteek »

The 204 exchange has the same problem. Not only does it drop the call in 5 minutes it has numerous other problems such as:
- tells incoming callers there is a network problem
- constant busy tone
- will not call forward to my personal cell phone but will to my work cell
- when on a call longer than 5 minutes (always and incoming) it beeps
- the audio beaks up

MJ support has not been willing to amit there is a problem. I have have tried EVERY recommended fix. If I am told to run the "fix" and unplug or reset the MJ one more time I am going to SCREEM!!!!!

Hello all

I live in Canada, have 2 MJ's with USA phone numbers and I am also getting the 5 minute time out. I had a chat with the MJ tech support yesterday and was told to run the latest upgrade, did that, and still no solution, the MJs' keep timing out after 5 minutes.

My Mj's were purchased in the US and as I say, I am using USA area codes.

Any help would be appreciated

5 minute call drop - fixed for me

Post by jerry west »

I can't take credit for this, as I read it somewhere else, on another thread, but it has worked for me and now my MJ is working normal - no more 5 min. call drops.

1. Get the uninstall majicjack.exe from the MJ website, and uninstall the software from your computer.

2. after the uninstall in done, wait 5 mins, and plug in the MJ, without the phone cord attatched. The Mj will start up and re-install itself.

3. connect phone cord and try a test call. It has worked for me without fail and have been using it for 3 days now very suceesfully.

Good luck....................hope it helps

The folks at magicJack don't know Jack!!!

Post by cobble »

I just stumbled on this thread about magicJacks with Canadian numbers dropping calls after 5 min. I also suffered through the magicJack chat and ran through their troubleshooting which, of course, didn't help at all. BTW, I have a 514 number. So, I feel somewhat understood having discovered that it wasn't a one-off thing with my magicJack. And, quite frankly, I'm furious to find out that magicJack would rather waste our time putting us through endless troubleshooting via their chats instead of officially acknowledging the problem and advising that they are working on a solution.

Here's a thought: Flood the chat line with requests to change numbers to US numbers to enable outgoing calls without a 5 minute limit until they figure out a solution. I would think that after receiving a flood of requests from irate Canadian customers that it might force their hand to acknowledge the problem and do something about it.

Thanks for this forum. If I learn about a temporary workaround, I'll post with any updates.

Just an update, I had to make a phone call today, expecting it to only last the standard 5 minutes... Much to my surprise the call went on and on and on, until I ended the call at 33 minutes... Has MJ fixed their problem??

Anyone else that has had this problem should do a couple test runs to see, and update...
