Magicjack routing all incoming calls to voicemail

Post by Nugrl »

I don't know what is happening now, but my new 4th gen mj, is now sending all my incoming calls straight to voicemail. any suggestions? I use magicfeatures, but disabling that did nothing.

I had a problem with the new gen. I have my MJ set up to ring into my house wiring on 2 phones. The only way to get it to ring through on the 4th gen was a direct connect to one phone. After much messing around, I switched out one of the phones, and was able to use my home wiring setup again.

It made no sense. I even put the old gen back on with the "bad" phone and it worked. So the combination of the 4th gen and one specific phone was screwing me up. So maybe try another phone. It can't hurt, but probably isn't your problem.

In my case, if I remember right, the call wasn't even showing up as a missed called on my dialer. The dialer popped up and then closed (Features) right away. If that is what is happening to you then I would assume there is some kind of conflict with another part of your setup and the 4th gen. I stumbled on my phone conflict as a last resort accident. I would try with and without scenarios to try and isolate it.

well I kinda had that happening to me the other day for a couple of days, but what it was doing, which I think was discussed in another thread here, when an incoming call would come in, the phone would ring really wierd and then it would shut down the mj and magicfeatures. So after I got the 4th gen and hooked it up it was working ok. I did what was suggested though in the other thread , I think you were on there, and it was suggested to install the newest release of magicfeatures 2.016. I did that, but now I am encountering this new problem of all incoming calls being routed straight to voicemail. The phone itself does not even ring here, it just sends the caller straight to voicemail.....????? on the other hand for now, my outgoing calls are still working..... so far.......

To rule it out as part of your troubleshooting, login to your magicJack account and double check to make sure you don't accidentally have call forwarding enabled. If it is turned on and the call forwarding number is bad all calls will route to voice mail.

I'm pretty sure that's what was happening to me. No ring but the dialer was popping open for a split second. I got it to work right, then isolated it to the phone. But it was definitely the 4th gen that threw it off (which other than having to switch out phones, I'm still happy with).

Have you checked the standard stuff? Rear USB port, NO extension cable. In Device Manager make sure ALL usb root hub power settings are NOT enabled ( More than one USB ROOT HUB entry)..

I would still suggest playing with the other components. Try a third phone...connect it without a router...etc.

Powered USB hub??

Did you try it on your other PC?? If so did it work?? If not it COULD be a defective MJ Gen 4.

Check the magicfeatures dashboard and make sure the do not disturb is not checked. Mine mysteriously got checked not to long ago

I was just going to edit my response to include that. A good idea because when MJ included DND as one of their options MANY forgot it was on and all calls went to VM.

nope, do not disturb not checked...?

@nailgunner, no I did not try a third phone. this is ridiculous! how is your 4th gen working for you? are you running win 7 or vista? I am using win 7 ultimate 32bit. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

don't even go there. if you only knew how long it took me to find a 4th gen around here. I was thrilled when I called radio shack and the guy there FINALLY said they had them!!!! and no, I don't have a powered usb hub here.

Ok, got it fixed. I live chatted mj support and they refreshed my connection and that seemed to fix it. I now can receive calls without them going straight to voicemail. I will test it out again in a minute, because I need to make a call. I will post back if it is still working. She said that the connection needed refreshed because we transferred my phone number from my old mj to the new one.

I am very glad too! I was getting upset, seeing as how I finally got my hands on one of the new 4th Gen MJ's and after reading how much better they are supposed to be then the older ones, all I could think was "Oh god, here we go again!" I just tested it out again, and it seems to be working fine in both directions. Yay!

BUMP:
well I had to bump this one back up to the top because I am having the very same problem again. I spent SEVERAL hours on live chat today with MJ support and got absolutely no where! As a matter a fact they actually made it worse! My outgoing calls were working fine, but my incoming calls at first were going to voicemail and my phone here never rang, but the caller could hear it ringing on their end then it sent them to voicemail. I knew I had this problem before so I just decided to immediately contact MJ support and have them do the same thing they did last time to fix the problem, but that did not work this time. They attempted to refresh my connection several times along with having me do alot of other things like opening ports, changing my DNS servers, and to be honest, my brain is so frazzled right now I can't even remember the rest. But I guess it doesn't matter at this point because its still not working, and they ended up screwing up my voicemail, so now it does not work too! So it ended with them saying they were sending my problem off to their engineers, (me figuring all along it was all bullshit and just their way of getting rid of me) but that didnt' work, I would just disconnect with that rep and live chat another one or two, or six, I don't know, I lost count. I didn't matter because they all did the same things over and over and over and none of them got it fixed. I am supposed to be waiting for an email from them. I have a feeling what email they are talking about. I think its their "Dear John" letter, offering me a refund, but I am not taking the refund, I want them to get it working right!!! Also this is my new 4th gen mj I am talking about. So needless to say, I am totally disappointed, once again, and maybe, just maybe I will get an email tomorrow from them telling me their "engineers" got it fixed! Ya right....... look at me holding my breathe

Well, I'm now having the exact same problem since yesterday. I thought I would wait it out and see if it self-corrected, but no such luck. Guess what fixed it? Plugging my old device back in. The old 3rd gen works like a charm. Had two 10%'s try to convince me that it wasn't a problem with the device though.

I cannot receive calls from anyone. I think I can call most except a few cell #'s (wasn't going to test call my whole list). Finally "Al" says that they are doing "upgrades" and to "rest assured" it will all be fixed.

The interesting thing is that the 911 area on my dialer is just gone with my new device. Gave up trying to get it fixed, mostly because I don't give a crap about it. But it shows again, yellow of course, when I plug my old device in. But they still insist it's not the new device at issue.

And the CS chaps just crack me up. One was having me change my desktop icons to small. My power went out just as I was going to find out what that was going to accomplish. The only thing I can figure out is that they wanted me to make room on my desktop for all the different upgrades they wanted me to try. What a joke.

And lastly, I had played around with the new MagicTalk product. I'm not going to use it in the foreseeable future and figured it wasn't doing me any good being inter-connected with the MagicJack. Well they tell me there is no way to cancel my MagicTalk account. Wwwwhhhhaaaaatttt?

@ nailgunner sorry to hear you are having the same problem, but Thank God its not just me. I thought, well they almost had me convinced it was something I did on my end, and that is not the case. They even tried to blame it on my anti virus and what not. They said they sent my problem to their "engineers" so I am to wait for an email from them now. I took that as they don't have a clue what the problem is and that was their brush off for me. One of them even disconnected me in one of my chats, probably because I kinda lost my cool a little. But you know, this is beyond frustrating and at what point are they ever going to get this working right? I feel bad for all those people that went out and bought a MJ yesterday since they were only $29.99 for black friday. I guess we will be seeing a lot of new members here shortly once they get home and get it connected to their computers, so be ready to be telling a lot more people to search, because they are going to have all the same questions we here have already been thru, .... several times! This most certainly is NOT a plug n play device!

hey you know what, I just noticed and I guess with all the unplugging, restarting and staring at the "Stock Symbol: CALL" thing, that I didn't even notice that I now have a 911 thing back in my dialer which had not been there before using the 4th gen. I am still using the 4th gen, so I dont' know what they did that has now made the 911 thing appear, but its there and my light is green???

@ nailgunner hey I was wondering, since I can only assume that MJ support when you went from your old mj to the new 4th gen like I did, did they have you go in and deactivate the old one yourself? They also had me do that last night, and now that I remember correctly, that is when after doing that my voicemail then quit working too. I think because you and I did the same thing, going from the old mj, transferring our phone number to the new 4th gen, that may be why you and I are having the same problems. I wonder if running their uninstaller from their site, would help our problem. It doesn't seem as though anyone else but you and I are having this problem...???

No. I'm using my old one now. Told the chat guy I was going to for a few days, so mine isn't deactivated.

My personal opinion is that it's all on their end. With MagicTalk being integrated with MagicJack, I think they are trying to do too much and it's ALL getting screwed up. But "rest assured" the guy told me, it will be fixed. So I'll wait a few days, check my new unit, and see.

WOW, you are alot more patient than I am. I need this number working, as it is the phone number that everyone I NEED to talk to has. :(

I'm only being patient because I have it working with my 3rd gen device.

And there seems to have been variations of this issue with others, and they have cleared up. Hopefully this will in a day or so. But I will keep at it.

Since you have the NT why not, for the time being anyway, just forward your MJ # to the NT? This way people can call you on your MJ # and still reach you without them having a new number to memorize?? Till MJ gets it fixed anyway..

well... I would love to do that! but, since the ever so wonderful mj support did whatever it was that they did yesterday, last night and again this morning, I can no longer forward that number until they get it fixed!! :x and the thing that concerns me is that is my main number that I have given out and I was expecting some important calls to come thru this weekend and now I am screwed!!! if you have ANY suggestions on how I may be able to get that number forwarded to another number, I am all ears. I am willing to try anything at this point!

You mean you cannot log into the MJ portal and set your forwarding number?

I leave my MJ permanently forwarded to NT, and use MJ primarily for outgoing calls.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

I "assume" you are using Magicfeatures to forward your number?? Try logging into your my.magicjack.com instead and do it from there..
I NEVER EVER do ANYTHING software wise on my PC MJ chat suggests. They once suggested I format my MJ ( when one was able to do so) for a voice mail problem. I told them NO WAY.. Then I said IF I put my MJ in a drawer for a year and taped it closed it would in no way affect my VM, so why in the world would I want to format it for a VM problem?
Did you try re-installing your Magicfeatures? Maybe with all they had you do it got messed up. But first, as I said I would just log into your MJ account and try to forward your number to your NT there.

I think I already tried that, but like I said I am up for about anything so I will give it a go again, and I will also try reinstalling magicfeatures and perhaps try an older release of it too. but keep thinking, don't quit on me now!

nope, that didn't work to forward the number. I get a recording that says, "we're sorry you call can not be completed as dialed, please check the number and dial again, or call your operator for assistance" . now I will try uninstalling and resinstalling mf and see if that does anything.

Ok DUMB question. Did you try to forward it to ANY other number? Or just your NT? Maybe your MJ is not recognizing your new NT number yet??

Also did you try what Nailgunner suggested? A system restore to just before you did your chat with MJ?

nope, that didn't work to forward the number.

A system restore to just before you did your chat with MJ?
well no, I have not tried a system restore yet, I guess I could, but don't you think this is ridiculous I have to restore my computer because they screwed it up!?!?

Of course it is. It's ridiculous that we are having an issue at all, or that MJ can't fix it quickly. The restore probably won't fix it, but it won't hurt especially if you haven't installed any new software.

ya know, don't you think its kinda funny how it seems that you and I are the ones having this problem? and we both did the same thing like I said before, went and bought a 4th gen, transferred our number over to the 4th gen. I am surprised that they did not want you to deactivate your old one like they had me do. It has rendered mine completely useless now, and they even told me that. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now. I think right after they had me deactivate the old one, is when my voice mail quit working. I am looking at my restore points now and trying to decide if I really want to do that and what date I should go back to...???

The whole set-up is sounding like it's imploding on them. They have pissed off all of Alaska and Canada.

I have done dozens of restores and never had a problem. I would go back to the first one before you had the problem. It's a long shot, but there could be something that they had you change that is screwing up the call forwarding. It's not like you can screw up MJ any more than it is.

I hate to ask you to do this, but, if you could put your 4th gen back in, just to see if it lets you forward your calls to another number. I am curious. Also if you do this, please pay attention to your settings you use to forward the number to another phone. btw what version of magicfeatures are you using now? I know you said you are using the old mj now, but if you could try that for me I sure would appreciate it.

Ok. It gets a "little" confusing. When I go to mymagicjack, I have 3 subscriptions listed. One is for my MagicTalk. One is for my old device, and if I choose that one, and go into renewal, it still shows 12-31 as my expiry date. The 3rd is for my new device.

I installed the new device and set up call forwarding for the subscription associated with my new device and it did NOT work. I then enabled it for all 3 subscriptions and it DID work. So I worked my way back, and found out that it DID work with just my old subscription enabled for forwarding.

It makes no sense. My new device, but my old subscription. See if you have two to choose from. My old one is the serial number of the old device. The new one has a name I assigned to it.

And a week or so ago, I had to upgrade to the new MJFeatures for some reason, so I'm using the latest on that.

Thank you for going in and swapping all that around to see what it would do. when you went into mymagicjack you said you enabled all three of your devices, what exactly do you mean? was your old mj not already deactivated and if so did you have to click on reactivate expired/inactive subscription to get it to work? because that is the only option I have for my old mj. I only have two listed in mine, the name I gave my new 4th gen and the serial number like you said for my old mj. I am afraid to click on reactivate my old one, in fear what it will do to my new one. I sure don't want to lose my phone number that I attached to the new one from the old one. also why do you think that call forwarding will only work with your old one and not the new one? what the hell did they go and do??? I went back to an older release of magicfeatures 2.014 but that did not seem to do anything for me. also tried the 2.011 it also did nothing.

No problem. It gave me a chance to see if the main issue was fixed. Of course it isn't.

My old MJ was never deactivated. By enabling all 3 I meant enabling the call forwarding on all 3, then since it worked, I found which one of the 3 was actually forwarding.

When you go into mymagicjack, does it not give you 2 choices in the "select your magicjack subscription" pulldown? If your old one is there, I would just choose it, then click on the call forward "change setting" tab, and give it a shot.

I have NO clue what they are doing. When it didn't work with the one it should have, I just played with them all and stumbled into it. Makes absolutely no sense to me. But then being MJ, it makes perfect sense.

Calls going to voicemail

Post by Tremere »

I have the same problem, and I have been on customer support 8 times, and they still can't / won't fix the problem.
They only have me do the same things over and over again.
They won't even consider the idea that the MagicJack may be defective.
The worst customer support I've ever dealt with. It seems they work from a written script, and are allowed no deviation from it.
Has anyone come up with a solution?
It seems to be limited to gen 4, can I get an older one?

similar problem

Post by ac »

I bought my MJ in June 2010 and have used it with no problems while outside the US, it really worked perfectly. No powered USB hub, no tricks.

I am back in the US now and some of my calls go to voice mail. MJ will ring and continue to ring, caller ID working. However, the person on the other end gets the VM message. On my side, I answer the call and hear nothing.

MJ is on a powered USB hub, using a Panasonic cordless. My internet is through Verizon wireless modem - this could be the problem perhaps. My last MJ update is 2.0.6.

Outgoing calls are not a problem.

Same problem here, no powered hub, MJ plugged directly in computer. phone line goes from MJ to fax machine then to phone (tried going straight to phone from MJ but only thing that changed is my CID stopped working).

I'm not sure if all the calls that do this are cellular but I know most are, but most of who I know doesn't have a landline, only cellular. Usually, my phone will ring once and show who is calling and I can call them back just fine.

And I am on DSL with wireless router.
