Magicjack number porting coming August 2010!

Post by Logical Dolphin »

Magicjack just updated their FAQ today (May 27, 2010) stating that number porting will come the first week of August 2010.

It is under the question: "Can I transfer or "port" my current land line telephone number to magicJack?", the other simular FAQ questions haven't been updated.

Hopefully TMC, will acutually follow through this time  ...

"Number porting will be available first week of August 2010.

There will be a nominal fee for number porting."

I will believe it when it happens. I have been waiting years for this moment! :D

Don't be foolish enough to fall for for it! We've all heard this empty promise MANY times before.

We will have to see. This is the first time I have seen a fairly firm date. Everything I have seen in the past has been vague at best...

This was one the major reasons I purchased MJ. After buying it THEN seeing how long this has been promised, they had better keep to their word. Otherwise, I'm on the horn with the FCC. I don't see how they can continue to say they're going to do it, and don't. I understand the BOCs are a pita to deal with, but come on.

Here's to crossing my fingers for the next 3 weeks! :?

Any guess as to how much this fee would be? Meaning how much do other companies charge for something like that?

My past experience was always free. So I have no idea.

The reason I'm asking is because now I still paying to keep my number alive for porting. If the cost is unreasonable (which I won't do then), I might was well end it now.

Considering a year of service is $20, I don't see how they could charge any more than that for # porting.

Even if it's $50 bucks, it's still a better price for phone service than any other phone company.

...unless their "nominal fee" is yearly, like the fees are for special/novelty phone number they have.

08 02 10 and sitting om MJ for months for Num Porting! Wait?

Post by human »

Any ideas on whether a brand new MJ would be better to hook up for the 1st time, before, or after, said promised, "Number porting will be available first week of August 2010", goes into effect? Are there generally promotional offerrings, or any other advantageous caveats when "Coming Soon" has been heard before? Any Gotchas? I've been sitting on this MJ for so long it's starting to complain of the heat, smell, and sound of "Coming Soon!" Maybe it's just Me running on past Coming Sooner, nor later sentences?

I wouldn't port a number to MJ that I wanted to keep for the rest of my life. Remember that one day you may need to port this number out and it would be nice to actually be able to talk to a real person on the phone instead of the script reading associates at MJ. The "Gotcha" is you may never be able to port your number out without going through hoops to make it happen.

I did not renew MagicJack last month because the web site still said that number porting was coming "soon" (after a year!) and I went to live chat tonight to let them know my reason. Someone named Jaron, for whom English definitely is not his/her native language, assured me that number porting will be available by the end of this week.

I replied "I do not mean to be insulting, but are you telling the truth?"

Jaron said something like "do not to worry it is already in approve".

So I said I'll check the website again at the end of this week and we thanked each other.[/code]

Ok, first week of Aug is over. I can only wait 2 more weeks before I need to pay another phone bill. :(

I just chatted with "Dudley."

After recovering from the laughable name with spotty Engrish, he said that at the latest it will available August 9th.

I say it's BS.

I recommend that you do NOT believe any dates in the FAQ or that support gives you... one day you may actually be able to port your number over to mj, but don't believe it until it actually is happening!

I have ported my number over to Call Centric as an incoming only line, and I call forward it to my mj number, and use mj for all my outgoing calls. Call Centric has excellent support and excellent quality. Even if mj starts offering number porting, I will keep my number with call centric due to mj's poor/unreliable support.

Read more about porting alternatives here:

Number Porting

Post by FunkyJunky »

This is a transcript of my Chat with Adam.....

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Adam'

Chat InformationYour Issue ID for this chat is LTK4190124185387X

Adam: Hello, how may I help you?

Gary Leonard: I contacted this chat earlier in the week regarding number portability that was supposed to be available by Aug 7th as advertised on your web site. They told me it wasn't ready but would be ready today (Friday). Where do I request this?

Adam: I understand you Gary. As of the moment we do not have further updates about number porting feature.

Adam: I may suggest you to chat us back after a couple of days.

Adam: Please do chat us back after a couple of days for updates.

Gary Leonard: Two years ago we were told "Coming soon". Now I'm being told "Coming soon". Your track record is a little iffy. Can you please give me a more reliable date?

Adam: I understand you Gary. We are working to give you the option to transfer or "port" your existing local phone number to magicJack however, we do not have the exact date when this new feature will be available.

Adam: As of the moment we do not have further details about this new feature.

Adam: We are receiving the same information here.

Adam: Is there anything else I may help you with today?

Gary Leonard: I have been on many forums and we (MagicJack users) all share the same problem. we bought it because you said porting was "coming soon" so we all thought magicJack would save us money. Two years later, we have all been paying our old phone bills AND our new bills. You said it was coming in August, first week. It isn't here, so you deceived us again. Please read the users forums. NOBODY BELIEVES YOU ANYMORE!!! I don't either.

Gary Leonard: What I am looking for is a bit of truth regarding the real date porting is expected.

Gary Leonard: I strongly suspect I am not going to get it.

Adam: I understand you Gary.

Adam: We do not have the exact date when this new feature will be available since we do not have further details about this new feature.

Adam: That's all the information I can provide to you right now.

Adam: Is there anything else I may help you with today?

Gary Leonard: I don't think you can help me..... Thanks Adam. It isn't your fault. Your bosses on the other hand....

Coming soon for real?

Post by tubasparky »

Here is some possible good news MJ just announced a service called Magictalk that will be free voip. I've seen people on here ask if they can use their magic jack without being plugged in. Here it is. The article also says that you can port your number to Magic Talk, and that it is a feature coming soon to Magic Jack.

Here is the article. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/art ... AD9HIQ8NG2

Hopefully we are seeing the end of the tunnel to allow porting for MJ.

I've been waiting by my corner email box for days now, and am without food or water. I'm so excited. It's almost like camping outside of the Apple store waiting for the iPhone 5.

Think about it. How does MJ/YMAX benefit from offering LNP??
It moves them in a direction more like a legit telco where they'd have a harder time masquerading as an 'advanced data provider' and being able to sidestep having the FCC make them comply with the full range of FCC regs. For instance, being able to selectively limit termination to high tariff rural telcos and trying to force people to use their proprietary conferencing service. Do you think ATT or current MaBell entities could get away with that?
I know you're not but don't hold your breath!!!!
Good Luck

Can someone tell me a bit of history about the promisses of porting number?

I recall back then, it's always coming soon. Coming soon could just be planning or just thinking about something they will do when they get to it.

Then there is a date Aug 10. So with a date, that mean MORE than coming soon. There is a target. A lot work has to have happen to estimate a target. Don't you think?

Did MJ offered a date and fail to deliver in the past?

Does any of that really matter. Stop your wishful thinking...There is absolutely no benefit for MJ to implement this

Fool me once...
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

No surprise anymore. I just chatted with a Magicjack rep, and it is the same old story, they are still working on it to make it 100% working and no new time frame available. She suggested I check back every "once in a while" for updates.

Any updates on number porting? I spoke to Technical Support, and they said it was "Beta". I am looking to port a Verizon Wireless number.

Any updates on number porting?
Respectfully, I would think the title of thread says it all.

FWIW, a friend of mine who unsuccessfully tried ooma was dismayed to learn that porting wasn't something that could be done immediately and would take three to four weeks for Ma Bell to relinquish the number.

I don't think we're going to see number porting or any other new features from Magic Jack. But that's just one reporter's opinion.

I would NEVER trust magicjack with an important thing like my number! You can read in this forum over and over again about their poor customer service, their many broken promises and their buggy software!

Keep your mj number for cheap outgoing calls, but transfer your number to somebody reputable like callcentric ( http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/loca ... t8395.html ) and pay the few extra bucks a month and call forward it to your mj number! It's still cheaper than a regualr phone line, and you will avoid the hassles and lies of mj.

When my contract is up with mj I will be switching to NetTalk. Unfortunately NetTalk can't do number porting yet either (but they aren't making any false promises about it either) so I will keep my important numbers with callcentric and just call forward them to NetTalk once I switch over.
