use expired MJ for free gmail calls using phone!

Post by andyha »

Hey everyone, not sure if this has been discovered or not but I found out that I can use my expired magic jack to connect my telephone to my computer and make unlimited free call to the US and Canada fro free using my phone! I really hate those headsets so this is esactly what I was looking for. You don't need any software or hacks, it's dead simple!

All I did was set my computer to not use autoplay. Then when I plugin my magic jack, nothing happens, or if you get an autoplay windows to sart magicjack, just close it. Windows 7 will find and load the tigerjet drivers within a minute or so and from there on in you are good to go. You will even get a slider in the volume app (speaker icon)on your notification bar so you can adjust the volume!

Ok, plug your phone into it and sign on to your gmail page. If you haven't already download the voice and chat plugin for gmail and install it. (there seems to be a problem with this plugin in 64bit systems so hopefully you have access to a 32bit machine). Ok click on the "call phone" on the lower left menu. When it opens put in any 10 digit number and press enter, pick up your phone and there you go!
Of course you can't use the numberpad from your phone, you have to dial through the gmail phone app. Call quality is excellent. Hope this works for everyone, cheers.
Andy
PS Google just announced a while ago that all calls to the US and Canada will be free through 2011 and possibly beyond so for the next year we are good!

DAMN. I'm always a day late and a dollar short. I just threw away my old expired device the other day after opening it up and messing with it. Would loved to have played with that set-up. DAMN

I am going to have to try this one day. I have a defective MJ that they sent me a new unit to replace it with and I just never threw it out. It is de-activated but should work for this.

Thanks for posting.

All you're doing here is using the MJ dongle as a sound card. There are more elegant solutions that will allow you to use the phone keypad to dial and answer calls that will actually ring your phone.
I think the proggy costs 7-8 bucks and you can find it widely mentioned on these fora.
You'll also need a true sip based TSIP but there are many of those referenced here.
Sorry, out of spoonfeeding mode these days

Yes, this indeed works, have been using it since the last year with an expired MJ.

I have made a prototype including software for exactly this.

I, however, need more devices to test, and have posted here : http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/mj-l ... 10350.html

Elegant? Who needs elegant? We are accustomed to using a MagicJack. I quick thinking about elegant almost exactly a year ago.

If it indeed works his way who needs prototypes/testing/software/applications/more devices?

Good question. It's because, as a glorified soundcard, you can't use the keypad and the chipset's DTMF handling + hook detection.
