sound coming through monitor and not phone

Hi,
I have had magic jack for a year, and I have not had any problems with it until I got a new monitor. The monitor has built in microphone/speaker. When I make phone calls, you can hear it through the monitor and not the phone. Has anyone else had this problem?? If so, please help. I don't know what to do.

Check your Sound settings in Control Panel and in the Magic Jack. I don't have my MJ plugged in at the moment but this happens to me occasionally and I have to switch them over.

Wish I could be more specific but I'm still working on my first cup of coffee. Let me know if you can't get it.

It sounds like you have your magicJack software set to use a headset (which really doesn't have to mean a headset, it just means it is using the PC audio device rather than the standard phone). So go to Menu in the mJ software, then select Volume/Headset Control... and make sure you are set to use the Telephone is selected and that magicJack is the device selected for all three items (ie. Speaker/earpiece, Microphone, and Ringing).

If he sets the default audio device in the Windows Control Panel to USB Internet Phone by TigerJet then ALL his audio will try to go through the magicJack device, and I doubt that is what most people want. Usually people want to hear their MP3 and videos coming through the PC speakers. Generally one should leave the default audio device for the computer to be the audio card in the computer and just adjust the magicJack software to use the mJ device rather than the default audio device. This goes for most any other softphone as well. At least this has been my experience.

Also, it isn't enough simply to make that setting correct.

After over a year with MJ on the same computer setup, it is now changing that setting by itself. One call will work correctly, then the next will go to the computer speakers. Very frustrating.

Resetting it or rebooting is now only good for one call. MJ is out the door very soon.

I'm not an expert on any of this, but something else seems to be going on. I make a few calls a day, and regularly reboot my computer and have never had this problem. I recently hooked up a webcam with a built in mic and MJ did mess with my telephone/headset setting. But I changed it back and it has stayed that way for over a week and with multiple re-boots.

One thing to try might be to uninstall and then reinstall MJ on your machine. If it started with the new monitor/speaker setup perhaps starting from scratch might help.

I would agree with what nailgunner said, something else is going on. My mJ has not demonstrated this behavior and I am now in my 3rd year of service. I run my mJ on an old IBM Thinkpad notebook with only 192MB of RAM, with microXP as the OS. I even have the Google Chrome browser up on the computer most of the time.

I think you should try your mJ on another computer to see if you get the same issues.

I have an ancient Compaq Presario with 192MB RAM and microXP on it and although I currently use an HP t5710 for MJ I was wondering if the Presario could be used as a backup. I'm glad to hear it is a probability.

Google Chrome? Why not stay light with Browzar?

Browzar isn't really it's own browser, it just wrapper for IE, and I don't like or trust IE. Check out this link:

Your old Compaq should work fine. I've gotten microXP to run on 64MB RAM systems (but I did not use my mJ with that little of RAM).
