MagicTalk Pop-Up FIXED . . . for now . . .

INTRODUCTION!

Greetings,

Long time MagicJack user and Unofficial MagicJack Forum reader. I recently registered because I have yet to find a solution to this issue on these threads and appreciate all the assistance I have found on these forums as a MagicJack noobie and decided to give back to this community.

This post explains all I know on this issue and then some . . . if you care not for these intracacies, then by all means skip to the THE FIX! section of this post. If you are bored, then please . . . read on!

THE ISSUE . . .

MagicJack is promoting their MagicTalk crap. The MagicTalk pop-up appears when the soft-phone software initializes before it can connect to the MagicJack hardware. One can only assume that in their infinite wisdom (sarcasm) MagicJack thought this would be a great selling point for their MagicTalk. WRONG!

If you are in the know and have a powered USB Hub to power your MagicJack, if you need easy access to your MagicJack and use a USB extension cable, or if your MagicJack server's specs are low your soft-phone software will undoubtedly initialize before it connects to the MagicJack hardware. Which in turn will cause the MagicTalk pop-up to be displayed.

THE FIX!

Luckily MagicJack in their infinate wisdom (not sarcasm) has already done the fix for you:

Windows Users Click: http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe

Mac Users Click: http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.dmg

Linux Users Click whichever of the above OS you use in your virtual box via your virtual box OS.

After the download click close on the MagicTalk pop-up to bring up an unconnected soft-phone. Unplug and immediately plug in your MagicJack (DO NOT safely remove via software). This should force your soft-phone to connect to your phone number.

Then double click the file you downloaded and update your MagicJack. Once finished . . . restart the computer. VOILA! No more pop-up.

IN CLOSING . . .

DO NOT EVER LISTEN TO MAGICJACK TECH! I would not allow them to make me a grilled cheese. There are more knowledgeable persons on these forums than in their whole outfit! Nothing they will tell you works. That Microsoft fix they have been telling people is an Internet Explorer fix to allow for more simultaneous downloads.

As of this date (June 21,2011) I can guarantee this fix works. If it fails to work, then MagicJack in their infinite wisdom (sarcasm) changed the update and fudged it . . . which will probably happen sometime soon.

With that being said . . . I have been a satisfied MagicJack user. With all of it's issues it is still cheap as hell. The old saying goes: "You get what you pay for". Which is true, but most if not all of it's issues are fixed rather easily.

I would like to thank everyone that has posted on these forums and assisted others. You have helped me and hopefully I have assisted in spreading the love! And for those on here that like to talk the shiz . . . I dumbed down the fix because not everyone is as perfect as you are in your Castle in the Skies where Unicorns traverse rainbows to bring you your MagicJack calls. Your arrogance and whit are annoying and mildly sublime at best. Spread the love, not the hate. And if this fix is already on this forum then please sticky it because I have yet to find it!

UPDATE!

Today my home lost power for approximately 10 minutes. After power was restored the MagicTalk pop-up reappeared. After a reboot, it was no longer there. I can only surmise that the MagicJack hardware was not ready when the softphone was good to go.

It may have been a fluke. I have rebooted the computer 10 times since to test and kept it on for a period of 8 hours and still no MagicTalk pop-up.

Any feedback from other users that have used this update would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE

The MagicJack manual update NO LONGER works. For the past week and a half I have been getting the MagicTalk window again. It was nice while it lasted . . . but oh well.

A Temporary fix is to hit the close button on the MagicTalk window. Then unplug your MagicJack and immediately plug it into another USB port. This forces your softphone to log into the MagicJack number and not the Magictalk option.

I have found that my service actually expires middle of August. I will no longer be using MagicJack due to this issue. If anyone knows of a decent VOIP that offers local numbers to use with the OBi 110, please either PM me or email me at [email protected]. Since this "fix" is no longer working further bumping of this thread is not necessary IMHO.

So while I'm picking on you. Seriously. This issue (bold added) is what will cause you to dump MJ? Having to pull the device out and re-insert it on a fairly rare occasion?

And in our chat from a few weeks ago, you thought it was quite funny that I was apparently talking to myself. So I HAVE to ask, since until my post now no one but you has chatted or bumped this thread, was that just a note to yourself about bumping the thread not being necessary?

Yeah your running into one of MJ special problems associated with their use of usb. Once a port fails to recognize MJ then it stays that way. Moving it to another port works until that port has the same problem. Eventually you run out of USB ports.

There is a process for removing all unrecognized ports from the registry I had to do that some time ago but sorry I don't remember the link now.

I'd like to have a copy of the registry keys for MagicTalk. These authorize the MagicTalk program to work on the PC.

My budget won't allow any money to buy a second MagicJack. I keep getting outbid, the resale value is way too high. More than the $11 I put in as my limit.
