Greetings all,
I'm currently deployed abroad and got MJ a few months back. Have had no issues with it (short of not ringing my newer model V-tech) until just recently.
I noticed my contacts wouldn't load, so i closed MJ, and re-opened it. When i did so, i got the following error:
"Please connect to the internet and double-click here [Error 20]"
Clearly i was connected to the internet. Spoke with their Tech LOLSupport who simply pushed an "upgrade" to me which did nothing. I've disabled all firewalls on my laptop (had no 3rd party FW, only Win 7 FW), disabled Avast AV, and completely removed MJ using the MJRemover utility found on MJ's website.
No luck.
I took the MJ device to a friend's computer on the same network and plugged it in, and lo-and-behold, the thing actually worked.
The kicker is this: When i DO double-click on the error message, i get the login/registration screen, but it is completely blank...and it sits, sits, sits...up to 45 minutes, and then times out with the statement that "We cannot contact the registration server, if you can browse normally the problem is on our end, yada yada"
There's nothing at the router level blocking the traffic because i ALSO took my laptop to my friend's location and dropped it on the same switch and got the same negative results.
Summary:
1) MJ "thinks" the laptop isn't online
2) Same MJ module works fine on a friend's PC
3) My Laptop at my friend's location with the MJ installed still produces the same error
4) Disabled AV, FW -- no luck
5) Have used multiple USB ports - no dice
6) Have removed/reinstalled + upgrade (lucky me) the software - no luck
7) And finally, one other weird anomaly: my.magicjack.com website will not resolve.
I'm at my wits end with this thing--any ideas? Thanks in advance for any guidance you guys can come up with!
[Error 20] Please Connect to the Internet and Double-Click

Hrmmm . . .
Greetings,
There could be a handful of issues going on. From what you have said it sounds like either something you did or MJ tech support had you do fudged up the MJ software on your PC.
I would recommend doing a Windows System Restore to a date prior to a MagicJack ever being plugged into your computer. I do not trust that MJRemover software and doubt very highly that it removes everything.
After the restore plug in your MJ and try again. Also since your using a laptop, I would recommend getting a powered USB hub. Most computers especially laptop usb ports do not supply enough power to run the MagicJack properly. That alone could be your problem . . . but very doubtful.
Also you mentioned your phone not ringing at one point . . . that is due to your phone's Ringer Equivalence Rating. The lower the better. I use a phone with a 0.08 Rating . . . rings every time.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Barada Nels

Error 20 and will not load contacts/calls
I had this same problem with the magicJack not loading contacts or calls. I contacted magicJack tech support and this is what they did.
They had me download a file that was called HotSpot Shield (from AnchorFree). I don't really know what this is suppose to do for magicJack, but I connected it and the contacts and calls downloaded like a dream, but then it gave me the error 20. The the tech support person (who was remotely in my pc at the time) disconnected the HotSpot Shield and the regular magicJack logo came up without the error message.
I also could not get to the my.magicjack.com to sign in to my account on the website. Once I had connected the HotSpot Shield I was able to get into my.magicJack without any problems at all. Once disconnected, I can't get into it if I try again.
I know it says HotSpot Shield is suppose to hide your IP address so you can view websites without them seeing who is viewing, but why would magicJack need this in order for me to download my contacts/calls? Especially since the system needs to be signed into in order to download the contacts/calls in the first place.

*Sigh* HotSpot Shield is Adware . . . they admit this in their own EULA:
"9.1 Advertisements. AnchorFree may deliver third-party advertisements ("Advertisements") within the content of any web page accessed. Advertisements may be injected into the top of the page, inserted directly into the page content, or even displayed to overlay the page. You hereby acknowledge and consent that AnchorFree may alter the content of any web page accessed for the purpose of displaying Advertisements. Additionally from time to time, AnchorFree may prevent any user's access to the product or continued use thereof until such user has successfully participated in applicable advertising programs, surveys, or other activities that collect and monetize users' personal information. AnchorFree does not endorse any information, materials, products, or services contained in or accessible through Advertisements."
It also says: “AnchorFree allows other companies, called third-party ad servers or ad networks, to serve advertisements within the Hotspot Shield. These third-party ad servers or ad networks use technology to send, directly to your browser, the advertisements and links that appear on the Hotspot Shield. They automatically receive the virtual IP Address assigned by AnchorFree when this happens. They may also use other technologies (such as cookies, javascript, or web beacons) to measure the effectiveness of their advertisements and to personalize their advertising content."
Apparently Vipre sees it as adware too: http://supportforums.sunbeltsoftware.co ... TMP=Linear
4th Post from the top explains why.
THIS IS WHY MAGICJACK TECH FAILS! They have absolutely NO clue what they are doing. I would recommend you deleting that crap off your computer immediately. If you want to protect your computers anominity then download Peer Guardian, Peer Block, or use a proxy server service such as Tor. All free . . . no ads.
As for your question of why does MagicJack need it . . . it does not. You are having another issue. I am sure the answer to your issue is on this forum somewhere.
Or you can do basic trouble shooting:
Run MagicJack on computer directly from Modem I.E. No Router.
Turn off Firewall (Only to test, do not keep it off).
Update MagicJack: http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe
Try the MagicJack on another computer. (Preferably on another internet as well)
I hope this helps!
Sincerely,
Barada Nels
Thank you for your quick reply. I had some other issues with my computer so I ended up doing a system restore back to the middle of June since I hadn't done anything that couldn't be "re-done" again since then. I no longer have the problem with the magicJack downloading contacts/calls. Plus the HotSpot Shield is not on my pc any longer either. Thank God for System Restore.

No, the subscription is due to expire at the end of the month though. Thanks for reminding me!
I ended up pulling it out of my thin client, and installing it on another PC at home. It did a 'Lucky You' upgrade and then started working on the second PC. Then I plugged it back into the thin client and it started working again. Go figure. Now I just need to re-image this second machine to get all the mj crap spyware off of it that probably gets left behind.
