XPe wont install...no license ?

Im trying to install xpe, but it starts to install then i get, "***ERROR*** the system does not have license for the image OS !" I spoke with hp and after the 3rd person i was told the unit came with 0 memory and did not include the os, therefore i can't install it from hp, and they said i could try microsoft or install a linux system. Anyone have suggestions on options for this ill be using it basically for the MJ which i dont think is compatible with the linux.

Have you performed the BIOS upgrades from the HP site? That would be a good idea no matter what OS you end up using.

This is the first I am aware of with regard to the HP XPe support only being available to certain models.

But I think you said in the other thread on this issue that you can no longer flash your copy of tiny XP into this T5730 now also; even though that had been working before. Is that correct?

Have you tried booting from freedos or linux from a usb device then looking at your installed flash using that? You should be able to treat the internal flash as just any other other IDE disk and partition/format it etc. Parted Magic which is free linux utility should be able to do this for you and there are many other utilities which can do that as well.

And again as I mentioned to you earlier to remember to remove the power chord not just turn or the TC in between tests because do that resets some BIOS values. You never reported back if you did that or not.

looked at the bios update, but it says to download it to the device then double click to run, not sure how to do that without the os installed. As far as the tiny xp, i have not tried that since i got the new flash memory the other day, wanted to see if i could get the xpe working as i had some issues with the tiny xp working with the magic jack. HP tech said i could download the linux os from there site, but i dont think mj will work with it. If i cant come up with a xpe solution i guess ill have to try tiny xp again.

Understand I am suggesting you use Parted Magic to examine the the new flash and partition/format it. That will let you know if everything is working there or not.

From the HP site

This package includes several methods for performing the BIOS update. Choose
the method that works best for your environment. Each folder has self-contained
files to perform the BIOS update. Any unwanted folders can be deleted.

Tools and appropriate BIOS images are contained in each of the directories, as
follows:

-- DOS Flash - DOS utility that can be used locally or with a preboot execution
environment (PXE) management application to update or restore the system BIOS.

So you should be able to perform BIOS update using DOS method.

sorry maybe this is getting over my head, as far as the bios, is it a simpe as downloading the dos version to the usb drive and installing it from there during the bootup ?

i looked at the partedmagic page, it looks like it need to be run from a cd image ? it says As of Parted Magic version 5.3 the USB zip has been discontinued. We are only supporting Unetbootin as the method for booting Parted Magic from a USB drive. Once again i think im a little lost.
I have an external cd cdrive i can hook to the tc, but i guess i need to download the partedmagic live file then burn the image to a cd, then boot up tc with the cd i created in, then somewhere within parted magic check and format the flash drive ?

one other thing partedmagic shows a few versions looks like 486, 686 processors, what would the one in this tc be consideded.

Wanted to verify the flash memory was good, so installed a full copy of xp pro i had here, seems to work fine except there are a few devices that didnt install correctly (yellow ? by them in device menu) one is the ethernet controller which i need, the other problem is there is only 30 days to activate

First you need to make bootable DOS usb stick then run the utilities to update the BIOS from that. If what HP syas above is correct for the T5730 then all the utilities need are included in the package. I have only worked with T5710's and all the tools for them were provided.

Yes that is correct either follow the Unetbootin procedure or easier if you have a USB CD then just burn a CD image and use that.

The reason I mention Parted Magic is because using it you can partition the flash drive so that it appears as more than one drive. At least the earlier versions of the HP TCs were limited to a 1GB primary partition.

Take a look at the "The Actual Partitioning" paragraph from the article I wrote about adding a 4GB microdrive to a T5710 using Parted Magic.

So you can try partitioning the flash and then reload XPe to see if that corrects the problem by using a smaller boot partition.
