Can't believe...

Post by slcorrado »

...that I can't keep 58 of the 60 months I bought last year, when I bought my MJ + another year.

So I call NetTalk...and learn they don't port numbers. What is this, a race to the bottom?

I believe my only other option is Ooma. Are there other established competitors? Any thoughts on Ooma?

Ooma will cost you more in monthly fees alone compared to Magicjack or Nettalk. Take a look at the Obi100 combined with Google Voice at http://obihai.com/

If I've understood my chats with them recently, or better, maybe if they understood me, you haven't "technically" lost your months.

Unless you deactivate the device, they will keep both the regular and the Plus active and usable with the same number. Doesn't do you much good if you only want to use the Plus, but you do have a backup for 58 months.

I wonder if your old MJ "breaks" and you purchase an MJ+ as a replacement, if one could push the issue on an account transfer to the new device (like they would do now for an MJ to MJ replacement).

I suppose it won't help if they reallly don't have the technical means to do so at the moment.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

   I bet the OP feels much better now having this info.
On the other hand he contributed to his misery by falling for Dan's 5 or 6 year trick.
I am a bit surprised by Nettalk's complacency about the number porting; they must realize that this is an important issue for many people.
One problem with Obi100/GV is( aside of some reliability issues with GV) that nobody really knows what is going to happen with GV down the road. The fact that the vast majority of GV accounts is inactive or has only a minimal activity reflects that.

Yea, I doubt there was much of anything the OP wanted to see posted other than "refund", thus my "Doesn't do you much good......but" sentence. Was hoping he/she was one of those "glass is half-full" kind of people. I doubt I would be in the same circumstance.

I can tell you the OP's outlook is 'the glass is more than half full'...my discontent is entirely based on principle. I'm not squeezing every penny, and not looking for a refund...just a transfer. Big picture, it's hard to make a financial mistake when the payback for any VOIP investment is a mere month or two (vs. landline service).

I may actually stay with the original MJ, but my dedicated PC gnaws at my environmental leanings, and in the past, I wondered the extent to which the PC might interfere with call quality...though it's been excellent, of late.

My next step is either Obi/GV or an on/off PC timer. Thanks for all the info/ideas.

PS...NetTalk's rep actually responded to my inquiry with "We don't port...we're not trying to make people angry or anything, we just don't do it." Found that interesting, obviously not the first time it's come up, and all I could do was advise that they're missing a huge window with MJ blowing the MJ+ launch.

I guess it doesn't matter, but I'm a little confused at this point. Your original post said "when I bought my MJ + another year".

The phrasing is open to either you bought a Plus with a year of service, or you bought another regular MJ with another year of service. I assumed since this is the Plus section that you bought the Plus. But that must not be the case if you are looking at Obi or a PC timer.

It's absolutely the case that I'm looking at (and would prefer to buy) the MJ+, but they won't transfer my 5 year block.

When I bought over a year ago, I got the MJ and a year, so I have 58 months remaining on the 5 year block.

Ok, so I have to ask. Rather than your dedicated PC, why not use a thin client? the HP t5710 and t5720 are very matured and stable. There are many other choices too but I'm most familiar with the 10 and the 20.

I like mine so much I'm considering buying the five year plan just prior to MJ's latest announced release date/price hike and forgetting about the plus. History has taught us it'll take at least 6 months, more like up to two years before all the bugs and kinks are worked out of the Plus. Why put yourself thorugh that aggrevation?
MJ user since Feb '10
MJ MagicFeatures user since Mar '10

Dedicated MJ Thin Client: HP t5710 1.2GHz 1gF/512R, running MJ, MagicFeatures & TightVNC, 12-15 watts w/o monitor, roughly $1.25 per month electric cost

Do tell. In case it somehow didn't show, I'm not technical. In fact, I thought a thin client was basically just an interface to a centralized CPU...and I thought MJ needs a CPU?

If not, this is looking better all the time.

Thanks again.

Just get a properly configured thin client ("TC"). The MJ should work fine (mine is very good), your regular computer won't be tied-up and won't have to be on all the time. TCs use little electricity. Make sure the TC has enough memory and flash/hard drive space. Search the TC part of this forum for more information.
