A couple of changes after a quick review:

magicJack:

- Works with Google Voice: Yes

- Can "power" many phones in a home: Yes

Would assume the changes would be applicable to the Plus as well.

Edit: And I believe MagicTalk has been out of beta for quite a while.

Any phone line technically "works with Google Voice". The question is what features of GV can it work with?

The only device I am aware of which works natively with Google Voice's XMPP protocol is the OBi series!

This mean you can not only receive GV calls but can place outgoing calls thru GV as well so that the receiving party is shown your GV number to return a call to you thru GV.

With regard to "can ring many phones" one should take a look at http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/my-m ... t1892.html

The OBi has a REN of 5 meaning it will drive 5 old style phones which have a REN of 1 each.

That's fine, I have my magicJack ringing 3 phones, 2 with a 1.0 and one with a .4 REN. Did I miss where the listing made mention of only being able to ring 5 phones to qualify for a "yes" answer?

Edit: My bad. 2 with a .4 and 1 with a 1.0

That wasn't the question. The question was does it work with GV. There are no qualifications in the listing of "natively working with GV XMPP protocol"!

IMO it's a listing aimed at someone with little or no VOIP exposure. As such, someone would read that and see that MJ, and NT don't work with GV, not that they work but that there is a difference in what shows up on CID vs Obi!

The line either doesn't belong in there or the original author/website put it in there to be intentionally misleading.

Ok define "works"?

IMHO your statement that MJ "works" with GV is the misleading one.

The big difference is that if your using MJ or NetTalk to place calls your not using GV to do that and therefore; if the called party returns your call it will be back to your NT or MJ number and bypass GV.

So yes you can have GV forward a call to your GV number to a MJ, NetTalk, Vonage or Ma Bell line but that is hardly "working" with GV.

http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/telephone_ringer.html
In USA minimum ring voltage supplied is 40Vrms (delivered into a 5 REN load)
I didn't make the measurements in the link to the other post in this forum where another user found his MJ would not ring a standard 2500 Deskset but there are lots of folks here who have reported similar issues. You only need to Google the problem to see that!

I call someone through GV, my MJ rings, I pick up and their phone rings with my GV number. When they don't answer and call me back 10 minutes later on my GV number, my MJ rings.

How exactly is that MJ not working with GV?

Exactly how is that different than any other phone line?

And how do you use the handset attached to MJ to place the call thru GV initially?

The other post you linked to was more than 3 years old!

What do I need to Google? Granted, it could be my imagination and I might be hearing things, but I have 3 phones that ring in my house when someone calls me, so per my experience, the answer to "can power many phones in the house" is yes.

Again, were there qualifications as to how old the phones were or if a "standard 2500 Deskset" was in the mix? Maybe you can make your own listing that makes that distinction. Besides my old GE 1.0 rings clear as a bell.

There are lots of folks in here that have posted success with having MJ "power" and ring multiple phones in their homes. You only need to Google to see that!

I make use of the GV app I have on my browser and enter in the number. Thus making my GV work with my MJ. It makes very little difference to me if I punch the number on my phone or type it on my computer.

I fully understand that MJ and Obi don't interact with GV in the same way. But I'm sure you've seen some of the same posts in here I have with users spending a day just getting GV set up. So to say GV doesn't work with MJ is misleading to the uninitiated who would see that listing and say "oh, I can't use MJ with GV. And that is ALL the listing is asking. Does it work? Does it work the same way as Obi? No. Does it work? Uhh, yea.

If your going to use your browser to place calls you could just use the speakers and microphone on the computer to work with Google Voice and not even need the MJ!

The OBi device makes using Google Voice exactly like using any regular telephone. You pickup the handset and dial the number you want. The called party see your GV number and if they call you back it is thru your GV account and your handset rings.

No having to use a computer at all or complex dialing by calling into your voicemail and going thru prompts to finally enter the number you wish to reach. So yes there are vast differences in how the OBi as opposed to any other device works with GV.

As far as setting up GV on the OBi it took me less than 2 minutes. I already had a GV account setup so I logged onto the OBi wizzard site entered my GV username and password I entered my areacode so both 7 and 10 digit calling would work and hit the save button. DONE

True, but I choose not to invest in a high quality headset for my desktop when I have 4 or 5 fully functioning phones to play with.

There is nothing complex the way I use MJ and GV. I enter the number on my browser, my phone rings, I pick it up, and it rings the party I called. If they call me it rings my MJ direct. No calling into voicemail and no prompts involved in either case.

And vast differences in how it works is totally different from it not working at all. I still think the line either doesn't belong in there as it is, or was put there to be intentionally misleading, just my opinion.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying about setting up GV. Joe and I had a day or two chat with a guy just getting GV set up, Obi wasn't involved. It is that type of person who "might" conclude from looking at the listing that you cannot use GV with MJ, and I was just pointing out that yes you can. Nothing more, nothing less.
