"Error two three" - Getting ready to trash the Mag

I have now spent at least 25 hours on chat attempting to solve the issue below, three hours last night alone and 8 different operators, I am completely frustrated.

The issue: When picking up the phone, I HEAR a nothing, then a recorded message saying "Error two three, check your internet connection".

Here is are the details:
- MagicJack Plus.
- Connected directly into the router.
- Netgear WNDR3700
- NOT connected to the computer.
- Fully Updated.
- Ports 5060, 5070, 49152-65535 open (this is set to the IP in the command window - shouldn't this be set for the magicjacks?)
- rebooted everything 10-15 times in the process.
- Tried a Netgear WNDR4500, this did not fix the issue.
- It does this on BOTH of my Magicjack plus units.
- Tried changing the ethernet cords.
- COX modem which has the ethernet + 2 phone outlets.
- 26meg download and 8 meg upload speed.
- When I unplug the MagicJack and plug it back in, it will give me dial tone and work for anywhere from 5 minutes to five hours, then suddenly no dial tone and error message.
- Sometimes I have a dial tone, then when dialing out it gives me the message above.

HELP PLEASE!!!

Already invested in two magic jack + units, 6 years service on both, business cards ...

Just an educated guess something in the router or modem is set wrong or is incomtable with MJ+.

We have success stories with Linksys and Belkin routers.

As a quick test place the MJ+ in the router's DMZ.

What is the DMZ?

I am thinking about picking up a Belkin N750 DB tomorrow to give it a shot...hopefully it will work with the rest of my system.

Found out that the Belkins do not work with my automation system, so I am sticking with the Netgear. I will most likely buy another computer to run the second magic jack, glad I invested in the plus version!

You may be able to plug a belkin router into your netgear system and run it that way, I do this at home when a guest needs an open WEP connection to the internet.

MJ does not need much band width, VoIP is all about smooth packet flow.

Just so I am clear, I can take one output from the Netgear router to feed the input of the belkin router, then plug the MagicJack Plus into the belkin

?

I did not know you could "piggyback" routers.

I have a few other questions if the above is correct:
1. Can the wireless be turned off in the belkin so it is a router only?
2. Do I have to open the ports in both routers or only the belkin?
3. Should it be gigabit or will 10/100 work for 4 MagicJack Plus units?

DMZ = Demilitarized Zone but in router context it means that the ip assigned does not use the routers firewall and thus bypasses one of the biggest headaches in voip, that of NAT transversal. You can Google to learn more about NAT and Voip problems. Most routers allow one ip to be assigned to this "DMZ".

(A) Yes.

(A) gigabit would be better but standard equipment should support four 91K MJ+ devices,I've run two smoothly on 10Meg down, 500K up cable internet.

I found the DMZ setting on the router but I need to set the allowed IP. How do I find out the IP of the magicJack?

Caryc,

Your router should have a page that shows the DHCP leases that are currently being used, one of those will be your mJ+.

Another option is to use something like Angry IP Scanner to scan your whole network for all devices with an IP address.

Probably a dumb question, but here it goes.

In port forwarding you specify the port, say 5060 to work with the magic jacks IP. If you have two magic jacks you need to open ports for both. When trying to add the second magic jack port it says that the port is being used by another device (Magicjack 1).

What am I doing wrong?

If you have narrowed it down to a router problem try flashing your router with dd-wrt http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database . It looks like yours is supported. Port forwarding should not be necessary for voip to work properly. As Vaham pointed out try your MJ+ in the dmz and see if it keeps it's connection with MJ's servers. I'm running MJ, Ooma, GV on Obi 110, TK 6000 and Sipsorcery with Sipgate for GV calling and no ports are forwarded.

With my linksys N router I have never needed to port foward anything, All I did was set the QOS to give preferance to VoIP connections.

With the Belkin piggybacked on the netgear, so far everything seems to be working great. 23 hours and no lost signal.

I am going to remove all of the port forwarding from both routers and see if it remains solid. Also, I need to do the DD-WRT upgrade, and see if I can get down to one router again. I will update in a couple of days.

I still need to figure out how to disable the wireless in the belkiin...time to read the manuls.
