Port forwarding on d-link dir-655 for magicJack Plus

Post by tuyen ly »

After spending many hours with tech support and my own time, here is the recipe for magicJack to work on DIR-655 when directly plugged into the router d-link DIR-655:
step-1:
--------
sign on to your router.
type this in the URL 192.168.0.1
Sign in with admin password

step 2
-------
Identify the ip address of your magicjack plus when plugged into your router.
You may need to log in or log out and plug in and out the mj multiple times to identify the ip address of mj+ (there is no name associated with Mj+ device when connected)
Once you have identified the ip address process to step 3

step 3
-------
Reserve the IP for magicJack ie
Click on setup network
scroll down to section Add DHCP reservation`
Select the ip identified in step 2
Assign the name magicJack to this IP
Click Save.
From now on when Mj+ connects to the router, it will have this ip address

Step 4 set port forwarding to 5060,5070
-----------------------------------------------
Click on advanced tab
Click on Port fowarding (second option on the left of screen)
Fill in the following values:
Name magicJack
Ip address (select computer name magicJack) then click on << to populate the ip address field- (You may also populate this field manually)
UDP =5060,5070
schedule Always
Inbound filter Allow All
Click Save Settings

Step 5: Uncheck SIP
---------
Go back to advanced.
click on Firewall settings (on the left)
scroll down to Application Level settings
Uncheck SIP
Save

Reboot the router.
After the router is rebooted, this should work

This settings works for me for mJ+ plugged directly to the router

does not work for D-LINK DIR-825

Post by pt »

tuyen ly - thanks for sharing - unfortunately it does not work for D-LINK DIR-825 Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.52VT.
After about 4hrs with the helpdesk agents they send my case to the engineers. Lets see what they will come up with.

They came up with nothing - as no one contacted me....
But I opened several more calls to the help desk and after about 18hrs with 8 operators + 5 Toprated 10% operators + 4 Live operators working on my pc directly - it finally seems to work : since 14 hrs now without error 23
UPDATE:
was working for 24 hrs
and again error 23 a few times a day agents are glueless - now they say its my phone the SIEMENS A490 causing this

I am close to return this non working device

Tuyen ly,
Thanks for your input. Is your Magicjack Plus still working?
I have a Dlink DGL-4100 router, I had my MagicJack Plus working for about a week, then I was getting error 23.
I have try all your instructions. I works for a few days and start getting error 23 again.
When I plug ethernet cable directly into my cable modem, reboot everything got MagicJack working again ..So the problem is not MagicJack.
I try about every things and more just can not get it work by hooking up to Dlink router.
I was ready to return the MagicJack Plus. I have a old SMC 7004VBR router I used as a swith. I figure just give it a try. So I remove my Dlink and install my old SMC router after changing necessary ip address. To my surprise It works now.
I do not have enough switching device so I put my Dlink Dgl-4100 on my ethernet network as switching plugs for my printers. As soon I hook Dlink to my network I notice I am getting an error 23 on my phone. Remove Dling no error message on my phone.
Now I believe there is some thing about Dlink DGL-4100 that causing the error message 23.
I will keep you inform How my MagicJack plus works out .. only time will tell.

Error 23

Post by SailorDave »

I'm sorry to say that the problem seems to be entirely related to MJ+ and Dlink routers. My DIR 600 wireless has this same issue. A newly installed Belkin N150 router has now been running for 3 days with NO outages. I couldn't make a single day work with my Dlink. Whether to blame Dlink or MJ is a moot question, it simply doesn't work properly. The recommended procedure to fix this problem lasted for upto a day and then failed. The Belkin worked with absolutely no intervention from the standard installation protocol. In contrast, the Dlink is now set with the MJ+ with port forwarding, fixed IP address and all of this in the DMZ. It works longer, but still fails. Maybe the folks at MJ will pay some attention to this issue, but I wouldn't hold my breath, thankyou. It is cheaper to simply hope that Dlink users will blow away. Forsure, using their customer support will simply raise your blood pressure and fix nothing.

no more error 23 with D-Link router DI-604

Post by pt »

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
used above DIR-655 setup and a old D-Link router DI-604 and no more error 23 ...since 3 weeks...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
but MagicJack can not handle
DIR-825 Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.52VT
or the other way around this firmware prevents MagicJack from working properly

and of course i did not receive any email from the MJ Technical Engineers who "started already working on this issue" - as promised by the MJ agents 3 weeks ago - in order to get rid of me...

After doing all that was listed by the other poster did you check the box on the left on the port forwarding page THEN save?

After the router is rebooted, this should work

AFTER THE REBOOT UNPLUG THE MJ FROM THE POWER WAIT ABOUT 10 SECONDS THEN POWER BACK UP.
This settings works for me for mJ+ plugged directly to the router
Your suggestion worked for me after a fashion. Only thing I missed was checking the box on the left then saving and rebooting. I added those comments within the quote

DID ALL THIS WITHOUT SUCCESS ON D-LINK DIR-825 Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.52VT

DIR-655 no need for port forwarding

Post by tuyen ly »

My previous solution (port forwarding + deactivate SIP) works for about a month then I expereince drop calls etc..
After testing etc... unsuccessfully,
I decided to upgrade firmware dir-655 to version 1.35NA. After reboot of modem and reconnecting the MagicJack plus directly to the router, amazingly it works right away. No need for doing any specialconfiguration
This is day 2 after this new method and it is still working fine. :D

Here it is 20 days later and the Magic Jack Plus is on its way back ...
Worked for about a week then started losing internet connection continually getting error 23 messages, on their tech support for hours tow different days really hoping someone would have a fix... NOT.

Along with port forwarding 5060 & 5070 the also added a range of ports from 49152-65535 but it did not help when booted up on the routed it would make one or two calls then revert back to error 23 no internet connection.

BTW I was already running the 1.35 firmware for the DIR-655

I had such high hopes... oh well.
