I just received the MagicJack and the setup allows you to immediately choose to transfer your existing number.
My question, if I choose to transfer my number immediately, will MagicJack issue a temp number to use in the meantime or will I have to wait for the transfer to occur before I can start to make calls? Or would it be better to register without requesting the transfer, then once I have an assigned number, go in to my account and transfer the number afterwards? I'm assuming you still have the choice to do the transfer after getting a temp number.
Thanks for any input.
Edit: And one other question. Since I'll be using the MagicJack plugged into an electric outlet (and not a USB port on a computer), I'm assuming it's ok to remove the MagicJack software from the PC, or at least the cdloader2.exe that starts automatically on boot up, correct?

Re: Registration and transferring old number
From what I understand when you "PORT" your existing number to MJ you will get to choose a temp number until the port is complete ( after the port is complete and your new number is the one you ported your MJ account might show both numbers for a while).Henderson wrote:I just received the MagicJack and the setup allows you to immediately choose to transfer your existing number.

BUT just in case it cant hurt to contact MJ online chat ( even though they are sub par) and ask. I am pretty sure what I told you is what happens.

Re: Registration and transferring old number
I chose to port my existing number when I registered my MJP on 12/31/11. IF I was assigned a temp number, I never saw it. The MJ IMMEDIATELY began displaying the number I ported when making calls.Henderson wrote:I just received the MagicJack and the setup allows you to immediately choose to transfer your existing number.

Any calls made TO my original number continued to ring only my non-MJP phones for 3 days (Today).
As of today (4 days later), my MJP receives all calls made to my original number. The port is complete. I never had to even speak with my carrier.
I asked before completing the registration, and they said I'll be assigned a temp number to use while the porting of my existing number is being processed.
However, that's not what happened. Like missileman said, the registration closed immediately and there never was a temp number issued even though at some point it said I can use the temp number assigned in the meantime. I logged into my account and only one number is shown there, the one being ported over.
I asked their live chat about this, and they said I should have a temp number listed at the top of the dial box on PC, however the only number shown is the one being ported over. It got down to them finally confirming that I can use the MJ now but only for outgoing calls, I really do not have any temp number assigned to it.
Learning experience that will hopefully help others. I can live with it, but it would have been nice had they said this up front. I would have opted for a free number first to really test the MJ since I'm a first-time user, rather than waiting for the porting to be completed. Luckily I'm just anxious to get rid of paying AT&T for a landline I don't use so even if the quality was poor, I'd still stick with the MJ.
Thanks for the responses.

Yes but just remember to have it run if you ever have to put the MJ dongle back into your USB port, or you will be posting here why it doesnt workHenderson wrote:I can at least stop the auto startup of the program though, correct? Or is it always dependent on the computer software running even when dialing with the phone?
