NetTalk Porting

Post by nailgunner »

Looks like NetTalk may finally have their number porting open for business.

Don't see what the cost of it is, but then I didn't look too hard either. Regardless, I doubt that they are charging an annual fee for it, so it will be interesting to see how long MJ sticks with that nonsense.

Well, Nettalk is catching up, however, with their recent rabid change in TOS they have their own set of issues. I do not see the flood gates opening.

I just ported a Vitality number I have to NetTalk Duo. There was no charge for the porting and the process was not bad filling in the form. You have to select a date for the port to take place 8 days from when you request the port so I'll let ya know how it goes.

Number Porting Available for New Customers?

Post by slavamon »

Does anyone know if the now available number porting is available for new customers or existing only? I'm trying MJ Plus and having billing issues, etc. so I want to try NetTalk if I can port my current (non-MJ number).

:) I have had a Duo for about a year now! The number was one which has my wife's birth year as the last four digits....cute but not terribly important. I still have my main voip number safely beyond the reach of dongles :)

I just wanted to try and port something to see how it goes.

Does it mean that you said good bye to Vitelity? If so, what would be the reason?

Oh no I have been very happy with Vitelity and that is where my 40+ year old phone number is running. They have lots of very nice features! One of which came handy today. For some reason one of my PBX's hung and wasn't connecting. Vitelity has an option to email you whenever an incoming call fails; so I got an email warning me of the problem and knew the PBX was down. Probably due to me putzing with voice to text on that machine last night :)

I just had the extra vanity DID which we really don't use, so I thought I'd try out the porting with NT. Since NT porting is free at least for now I figured why not give it a try and see how it goes since I know the Vitelity DID's are available for porting out.

It would be easy enough to get another Vitelity DID for $1.49/mo if I felt the need later.

Looks like the setup on the Net Talk porting page is set up for porting from specific providers, but Google Voice isn't among those listed. Google Voice is a pain in the ass to use with the Net Talk Duo, so I'd rather port the number completely over and be done with the hassle.

The porting request seems to have gone through, but we'll see how it goes, since my "current phone number" is listed as "other".

Google got back to me this morning. Ironically enough, the "free" service charged me to port the number out. Yeah, it was only $3, but still, it's odd that the only time that number cost me anything at all, is when I finally took it out of Google's hands. I've had the number even before there was such a thing as "Google Voice", since I signed up with what was then known as "Grand Central" in 2007 (originally used with Gizmo and then kept it because I couldn't get a MagicJack with a local area code)

Google probably shouldn't even be charging me for something I never got from them in the first place, but like I said, three bucks ain't gonna kill me.

Now let's see if they can get their forms shuffled back and forth by the end of the week........

NetTalk Porting Status: SUCCESSFUL

Post by VaHam »

Well my test of netTalk's porting was a success. The process took from the 1st of Feb until today the 10th but it has been accomplished.

netTalk's web portal has the option to port your number (currently for free). Once you have completed the online form you receive an email right afterward which is a little misleading since it's subject/title reads "Your phone number has been ported to netTALK"; however if you check the status that first email will say pending. The text goes on to say you will receive email when status changes.

Shortly after 4 pm today I received a second email with the same title and the status was "SUCCESSFUL". So I tested both incoming calls to the newly ported number and that the CID of calls from the NT device were correct and they were.

Oh and did I mention netTalk's number porting is currently FREE :P

Yeah, they had to do something to fix the PR disaster after their recent sudden TOS change.... :)
