Making MJ+ and computer internet work with switch

Post by disc »

MJ+ works when plugged into Linksys 5-port switch which is connected to cable modem. But my computer's internet doesn't work when connected to the same switch. If I remove MJ+, then the computer internet works.

Can somebody help me fix this so both computer and MJ+ work together when connected to switch by ethernet cables?

Thanks

Is your Linsys a router or just a switch?

What you want is to split your internet between the two devices
and a switch will not do that.

A router WILL allow you to connect the 2 devices to the same
internet (your modem)

It is a switch. But it should still work because when I connect 2 computers to the switch, both have internet connectivity. Is there some setting I need to change to make it work?

Thanks

The 2 computers may show connectivity but it will not
be to the internet, it will be with each other (local intranet)

You need a router for the two computers to both have
internet access ( or 1 computer and 1 Magic Jack)

If you connect your switch to the modem and then a computer
to the switch, that computer then receives an IP from your service
provider who in turn lets you connect to their network and surf
the internet. If you connect 2 devices to the same switch, your
internet service provider will only allow one to connect and have
access to the internet.

This is were the router comes in.
Think of the router as being one of your computers and it
connects to your internet service provider and is allowed
access to their network.

Now you can connect 2 or more computers to your router
and the router will "share" the same internet connection between
the 2 computers. A switch will NOT share your internet
between 2 or more computers.

A switch will allow network traffic between the devices connected to
it but will not share internet (intranet-yes, internet-no)

I hope this doesn't add confusion
