How to stop MagicJack Plus from creating shortcuts?

Post by Henderson »

Everytime I reboot my computer and/or MagicJack restarts, it insists on re-creating shortcuts on my desktop in the Programs start menu. Is there a way to stop it from creating those shortcuts?

I keep my desktop and Programs start menus very organized and it's driving me crazy to keep deleting those unnecessary shortcuts.

After you do this you can then delete your shortcuts and they will stay deleted, at least they did for me since WAY back in 2008..

Oh that is a sweet solution, thank you!

I did it a bit differently though, I didn't see the need to install yet another program, even as tiny and inobtrusive as it seems, that I really don't need.

If you're not afraid of your registry, open it up and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Find the cdloader entry and edit it as your other post said to (include all quotation marks):
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "I:\magicJack"

Make sure the path is correct using your account name if it's not Administrator. You can then rename the entry to whatever you like also, I just renamed mine to MagicJack.

That seemed a much simpler and quicker solution to me. And the end result is the same, no more *$@^@ annoying shortcuts!

Thanks again.

Edit: I would suggest as an easy way to get the original cdloader back in case you ever want it is to export the Run entries and save it to .reg file before making the above change. Then it's just a matter of deleting your changed entry, and double-clicking the .reg file you created with the export.

FYI, unless your solution works differently than the original using the Startup program, every time you have to reinsert the MJ (and you will :( ), MJ puts back all the original shortcuts again, and you have to do the procedure all over again until the next time :( I shut my computer down every night, and I have to remove the shortcuts at least once or twice a week.

For myself, I've not once had to reinsert the dongle since I got the MagicJack in January. I don't move it between computers, it just stays in one place.

I'm assuming when MagicJack does an update, the shortcuts will probably be back. If and when that happens, it takes a minute to do the registry change posted, whether you use the 3rd party program to do it or just edit the registry yourself, to get rid of the shortcuts again. I can't imagine them doing very frequent updates in all honesty, and anything is better than having to delete the shortcuts every time I had to reboot.

You are correct.. When MJ updates you do have to delete the icons again and make the registry changes. A small price to pay in my opinion.

I did neglect to mention I'm using Windows 7 in case that make a difference ;)
I never move the dongle either, just when it tells me I have to at least once a week to reboot it. Again though, I'm using the Startup32 program to accomplish this as posted, but I will have to give Henderson's method a try and see if it differs in the long run.

I'm using WinXP SP3 and I've never once seen a message telling me I need to reboot the MagicJack. I leave my PC on 24/7 and often don't reboot for weeks at a time, only when a Windows update forces me to eventually reboot or installing other software.

The only difference between my fix editing the registry directly and using the 3rd party program to do it is that I left the entry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, while the original post has you put it under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Both locations work though and I don't see why one would give any different results than the other.

And I totally agree with bitstopjoe that deleting the icons once in awhile after an update is a small price to pay to be rid of them, I'm very happy with this fix.

As posted, I shut my computer down every night (it really does save alot of electricity...I didn't believe it either till I tried it ;) ), so with every reboot of my computer, I can sometimes get MJ asking for a reboot....but like you, when I left my computer on 24/7, I never had to reboot MJ either :)
