Can't call out - receive a recorded message from MJ
When I try to call out, I receive a recorded message from MJ saying: To make a conference call or to call a platform, go to my.magicjack.com, etc. Can someone tell me what this is about? I've never had this problem before. Thank you.

That means nothing. There can be just ONE specific exchange WITHIN the 401 area code that they are blocking. Happens all the time with MJ.Nisko555 wrote:No, it's a 401 area code (Rhode Island) and all other calls to that state work.
The fact that all other calls to the state work almost makes it a certainty that they are blocking that exchange.

That certainly is the way magicJack wants you to deal with them blocking phone numbers.udsting wrote:you need to purchase prepaid minutes in order for you to call numbers that gives out the messsage.
But as mentioned in his other post, there are free GoogleVoice workarounds available. It can't take much more than 5 minutes to get a GoogleVoice account set up and working. Probably about the same amount of time it would take to buy prepaid minutes from MJ. And without financially rewarding Dan's bad behavior.

I got the same thing in my area...just one prefix of the 10 or so in my area code. Their explanation was that the local carrier was charging for these calls, but the local carrier says they have not changed. When I asked for a refund they told me they wouldn't do it...Nisko555 wrote:When I try to call out, I receive a recorded message from MJ saying: To make a conference call or to call a platform, go to my.magicjack.com, etc. Can someone tell me what this is about? Now I can call about half the people i need to call unless I pay the extra...They changed the policy and now I have to pay or just lose what I've paid for already...BBB here I come...

I am having a similar issue but slightly different. My Dad gets that same message about buying conference minutes but not from his base phone but when he picks up one of the cordless phones and tries to call the number from one of them!Nisko555 wrote:When I try to call out, I receive a recorded message from MJ saying: To make a conference call or to call a platform, go to my.magicjack.com, etc. Can someone tell me what this is about? Thank you for that suggestion. I chatted today & got the same "the area carrier is charging to connect" msg. Your GoogleVoice workaround's worth a try.[/quote]nailgunner wrote:That certainly is the way magicJack wants you to deal with them blocking phone numbers.udsting wrote:you need to purchase prepaid minutes in order for you to call numbers that gives out the messsage.

Well actually it is not magicjack alone... It is all the major telephone providers are charging it. The number you are trying to call is under a rural provider. These rural providers charges anyone who tries to call their number if it is at&t and other providers they will be charge though you cannot hear the message like magicjack because the charges will be on the monthly bills unlike the magicjack who doesn't have one, they will charge you with the prepaid minutes instead. You can check the provider here TNID.US just enter the number and you will see that the number is under a provider that belongs to a rural area.

Very disappointed
Now MJ won't allow me to call the access number of a prepaid phone card! There's no reason other than to force me to pay them, but wait, I already did! Will complain to BBB. it's just a money grab. It's a regular phone number and the fact that I can call it from any other phone but MJ confirms it. They just want me to pay them to call and then pay the prepaid phone card company. Fortunately MJ is not my only phone and if this stupid thing continues, I will disconnect it.
