Can't dial the number: 401-383-2000

Post by Nisko555 »

401 is the Rhode Island area code and the number is to COX Cable. When I dial, I immediately get a MJ recording and my call won't go through.

Another one.

Because you post the question a SECOND time, doesn't change the answer to your original post:

http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/magi ... html#78093

THAT NUMBER IS BEING BLOCKED BY MAGICJACK.

I just switched over from the GVJackApp to the MJ and tried the number and it isn't going through.

You can either wait for them to unblock it, the blocks are sometimes short-lived. Or you can sign up for a GoogleVoice number and call that way. GV is not blocking the number.

Posting the question a 3rd time will not change anything.

Sorry, but I thought that by posting the actual number, someone would have a better answer. I have no idea why MJ would block that specific number - and the recording didn't say tha the number was blocked. It just asked if I wanted to make a conference call or call a platform. Both are foreign to me. MJ chat was of no help. What is this GMAIL number you are referring to (or Google number)? I'm not familiar with that either or how it works.

There are actually 2 options that you have with GoogleVoice, both are discussed somewhere in here, plus a general Google search should help as well.

But basically, if you sign up for a GoogleVoice number you can make/receive calls through your MJ. On an outgoing call, it calls your MJ number and connects you to the party you are calling via the Google system, and not the MJ system.

The second one is setting up a gmail account and using it's ability to make calls. That will only work on outgoing calls, but you don't need a GoogleVoice number. When you call out, a generic Google number shows up as the number you are calling from.

Both work fine. Both need the MJ device plugged in. Details on both are in this forum somewhere. There isn't much on the second method, so I will post a link in a few minutes.

The reasons why MJ blocks certain area codes or exchanges has been discussed on this forum a zillion times. And although the use of the search function sometimes does not bring any results, that's not the case in this matter.
Certain telecom providers charge higher termination fees to MJ than MJ is willing to pay.
There is another way to use GV : an Obi device. Check out Obihai.com

He could also buy the GVJackApp. Or switch to NetTalk since they generally don't block calls. Although switching to another device/service because of 1 blocked number seems a little extreme.

It's probably the whole exchange blocked.
I am not sure whether I would recommend Nettalk, it's like trading lung cancer for Alzheimer.
GVJack is certainly a valid solution. The least expensive one and certainly great for people on the go- you just take your little dongle with you and plug it in the USB port- works even in places where you cannot plug anything into modem/router.
I personally prefer Obi.A non-proprietary ATA which gives you the choice of multiple VOIP providers and a heck of flexibility.

More than likely. He had mentioned in his other thread that this was the only call into R.I. that wasn't working for him, so I would just do a work-around.

I wouldn't switch to NetTalk either. I'm actually very happy with the GVJackApp, which is cheaper than any option out there, especially if you already have a MJ device. If it stays the course, I will be letting my MJ subscription expire in Nov.

Is there any chance that, by using the Google app, that my voice won't sound broken up on the other end?

It's certainly possible.

My general opinion, based on nothing but reading various forums and 2 years of using just MJ and the GVJackApp for about a month, is that if you have issues with call quality it is more likely than not something within your system that is causing the issue. That obviously is not always the case.

It certainly won't hurt to try it out. They have 7 day free trials on all their products. So pick a 7 day period when you are going to be making a lot of calls and give it a test run: http://www.pcphonesoft.com/

Edit: You can also test Google call quality just by getting a free GoogleVoice number and play with that for free as long as you want. After you set it up, even though it rings your MJ number, it completes the call through the Google network and not magicJacks. Which is why it's a good, free, way around MJ blocking numbers.

Well, while this might be true the fact is that different VOIP providers are not equally vulnerable . I experienced better and more consistent performance with GV than with MJ.Off course, I use Obi, not GVJack, but if GV Jack's performance is anywhere near Obi performance I would not hesitate a split second .
The reason I chose for Obi is because I need an additional VOIP provider.
And while Obi comes with acquisition costs, GV does not cost me anything and the costs of 2 DID's from Localphone ( one US and one foreign) are less than the new subscription for MJ .
