MagicJack Plus Hacked???? HELP!

Post by magicjack85 »

Hi all,

I was having issues with dropped calls, so I came across this article on how to expose your magicJack plus unit to the internet using DMZ. I don't know if it really worked because I didn't have many calls.

Ooops! After only a couple of days with my router configured in that manner, today I was getting all kinds of strange phone calls. Of course, I'm not answering them. Over 8 odd calls today, at varying intervals. I had to turn the ringer off the phone. Odd characters were showing up on my caller id Name String as well.

Now, I switched back my router, and I even ran magicFix with the unit connected via usb to the pc. The problem still continues. I therefore am using a backup magicjack connected to another account (with a separate phone number).

Anyone have any idea what the hacker could have done? For security purposes, I changed my magicjack account password, and I now changed the phone number assigned to my MagicJack plus.

HELP!!! Worst case scenario, I'll either have to get a new number, buy a new magicJack plus, or both!

Please let me know the brand and model of your router to help you out.

If I may suggest to try turning off the DMZ option from router which may have caused this issue. You can do forward ports 4152 - 65525, UDP.

Let me know if that works.

Homeportal 2701HG-B. I turned off DMZ and connected to my laptop, and still had problems, so I unplugged the mj+ and, right now, my mjplus is not being used, and I'm using a different phone number on a different mj with a different account entirely. I'm going to try another magicjack with my original phone number to see if the phone number itself has somehow been compromised. If it is the unit itself that has been compromised, I'll have to replace it.

I do not think someone hacked your MJ .. it's getting to be the time were everyone will be getting calls from Dem. or Rep. who want you to vote ..

DMZ does open up your Router a little ..it would take someone a long time to break into your router and then why go after MJ , also if you turned DMZ off again ... also the link the person has above me , goes no were

I would be asking .. who did I hand the MJ number out too .. your on someones list and they sold your number ..

Now, it seems, that the problem is not with the magicjack itself, but the number. Apparently, someone got my number and I am now being bombarded with phone calls from different area codes. I have added my phone to the "DO NOT CALL" registry and I will see if that fixes the problem. It may take 30 days for the calls to stop.
