MJP Stand Alone Lost Soft Phone

Post by ArubaBob »

MJP is running great from a power outlet. I have a Mac and I transferred my standard MJ account over to a new MJ Plus, which is used as a stand alone device plugged into a router.

When you use the MJ Plus not plugged into the computer can I also have my soft phone on my desktop with this configuration?

When my Mac starts up the soft phone begins to load but then a larger screen pops up that says, "2009 Product of the Year - Insert your MagicJack to make calls - No MagicJack? Click Here". When I close the pop up there is no desktop soft phone.

That desktop soft phone was handy. Can I ever get it back?

Yes you can get it back. Plug your Plus back into your computer.
Since the softphone is software/O.S ( Windows, Mac) based it will not work plugged into your router as the OS never sees it.

Yes, when I plug the MJP into one of my computers USB ports the softphone will start up but while I prefer to use MJP as a stand alone device plugged into my router the softphone will disappear.

I went from the standard MJ to the MJP so that I could take advantage of using it as a stand alone device... without having to depend upon my computer.

I can still access my contact list by accessing my account online. It was just easier to use the soft phone for that. I guess I'll just have to get used to living without it.

Thanks for your response and input, Joe.

Why not just add your contacts to the phones own directory? This solves 2 things. One, it puts all your contacts again at your fingertips, and two, when you get a call, caller id will not only show the number BUT the name associated with it as well, if your phones supports it. Since MJ only shows the caller ID number this way you will get the name as well, which MJ does not currently support.

I'm not sure how saving or adding your contacts to the phone own directory works. The phone that is connected to the MJ device needs to be NOT connected the the home phone line/service. So, I don't think the phone line has a control over the situation if it's not plugged into its service. Haven't tried that yet actually but if you've tried it successfully, sharing your idea on how it works will highly be appreciated. :D

Yes it works as the phone has no idea if it is connected to a regular phone service or MJ, or GV or OBi.
It sees the incoming call and number and if that number is in it's own directory and has a name associated with it AND the phone supports it ( I have a Uniden and it does JUST that) you will see the name and number on your phones caller ID display.

If you still have time left on your old MJ you could plug that into computer and access what you need at the same time your MJP is on. I used to do it when I had both MJP and original MJ. Might work for you ?

@ Paul777,

it seems inconvenient to access the contact from the OLD MJ dial pad while using the MJ plus. What do you think?

Joe, you are right on. I was so used to using the soft phone I almost forgot about my new home phone's capabilities... I had no numbers listed in it.

When I first obtained the standard MJ years ago I thought that the soft phone was silly... but I got used to it... then dependent on it over time. You are correct in so far as most modern home phones have the capability of maintaing a contact, a favorite or frequently dialed numbers list. I have now gone that route... by listing the former contacts I had with MJ into my home phone. I am now a happy man and I will eventually not miss the soft phone at all.

Paul, recently the latest MJP allows us to transfer ALL of our paid standard MJ service time as well as the phone number over to the new MJP. That prepaid service time transfer capability is what urged me to obtain one of the new MJPs.

Glad to have been of help Bob...
Dont forget to add new names and numbers to your contacts as they come in. This way you will always be up to date, plus I also from time to time update the cordless base phone directory as well and all of the other handsets.
