If your outside phone line is damaged (WHO WILL FIX IT)

I'm just curious, if I cancel my phone line provider, and then rely on the MJP, who will fix the phone line if it is damaged in a storm or a contractor accidentally cuts a wire. I doubt my phone provider would fix it for free like before. That said, I still have my Internet with my provider, so seeing that the MJP is connected to my computer's router, would this become an internet issue, forcing my phone and internet company (which are the same) to fix whatever outside issue I'd have ?
I'm sure it's happened to someone, and what were the results ?

The ONLY way it would be a problem is if you want to go back to a landline for your phone service. Of course if you have DSL then yes your phone lines come into play, however if you get your Internet via cable, the birds and rats could eat all of your outside phone lines (inside too) and it would not affect your VOIP phone service, apples and oranges...

I get my Internet via the phone line (Bell), so is that a good thing ?

So that means you have DSL....So yes you need to make sure your phone lines are in good shape as your internet comes over your phone line.. So if you go with the MJP and want to cancel your land line you need to find out FIRST if you can still get your DSL signal without a landline ( Dry Loop or Naked DSL). If they say no, then along with your landline you will lose your internet and therefore the MJP or any other VOIP device will NOT work.
Of course if you have cable TV they most likely offer internet as well...So you can always swicth to cable.

All that being said, if you do not already have MJP make sure it works FIRST for you before you do anything else....

YIKES, Thanks for the heads up Joe, I'll call my phone company to make sure. I have satellite tv so, it doesn't matter. However, my buddy at the other end of town (the guy who put me onto mjp) cancelled his phone provider, which I'm pretty sure was the same company as I have. I'll double check with him as well....just to be on the safe side. I sure hope I can cancel my phone line though, I'd be saving 65 bucks/month. Thanks again for the info Joe.

Another thought - If you need to keep POTS (plain old telephone service) to have the DSL, change your POTS to the bare minimum. Don't pre-subscribe to a long distance carrier (you won't need it anymore), get rid of all the other services (voicemail, forwarding, caller-id, selective ring, call waiting, etc.), offered by your telco. Some companies even charge extra for touchtone service. The telco may offer a low rate if the phone is used for incoming calls only (typically you pay for every outgoing call; with MJ in place, who cares?) If you're a senior citizen, there may be a special rate.

Thanks for the tips, I'm calling the Telco. this week, so I'll see what gives. I hope they don't lie to me when I ask them "if I need phone service in order to get Internet"? I just to trust those SOB's
I'll report back what I find out.

When we dropped AT&T, I checked first. If you remove your old telephone number, for instance when you go for naked DSL or if you transfer your number to your magicJack, you end up deleting all services. You must re-apply for any new services as if you are a new customer. That means a credit check and possibly a new service retainer fee if your credit is not so hot. However, since we just dropped the AT&T and DSL altogether and chose cable as our ISP, that became less of an issue.

Well after all the hassle, we gave the magic jack plus a good trial, and unfortunately, we're going to send it back. We noticed that sometimes there is a bad echo, or if 2 people talk at the same time, one of them cuts out. The most annoying thing is when talking to someone and the phone just goes dead for no apparent reason, forcing you or the caller to call back.
The old saying that "if it's too good to be true, ......it probably is.
However I'm glad I tried it, and I'm glad I didn't cancel my land line.

There are many inexpensive VOIP services far better than MJ. No need to go back to the land line.

If you have a "naked " DSL or U-verse DSL, you are responsible for the inside wiring, meaning anything from the box going inside of your house. So, if you have a broadband problem and they come out and find that the rats chew through the wires in your walls, you will be charged a very steep fee. Sometimjes when you complain about quality of your DSL they will come and claim problems with your wires even if there is no problem with it, just to get the money.
