Phone won't ring

I can make outgoing calls, but my phone won't ring - I just get emails for missed calls/vm messages.

Any suggestions?

I bought a new Philips DECT 6.0 cordless phone with 1 base unit and 2 remote units. I've unplugged them all but the base unit: still doesn't ring. The call comes in, but phone still won't ring. Cord between Magic Jack and the phone is less than 6 feet long, as suggested by Magic Jack: phone still won't ring. I can make outgoing calls just fine, but can't figure out how to get a ringing phone in the house.

look at the base of your phone it should have a number listed for REN

0.0 0.6 0.7 1.0 etc...

One of those or something similar.

Mine is 0.7

I am in the process of trying to use an AC powered USB Hub to give more power to the phone

REN is what the phone pulls (OHMS) to ring and such....

I also have this problem as I have 3 phones and a fax. Magic Jack says that they will support only a 6 ft telephone cord.

I can make calls on all of my phones but no ring. My setup is that I run 50 ft from magic jack to my outside box where I disconnected the old ATT.
My lines were the very old not twisted pair and I had red/green and black/yellow pairs.

So I disconnected the ATT service then solderec a red/green pair to the line and ran it to a RJ11 jack in the garage and then a 50 ft telephone pair to the magic jack.

When I did not get a ring I chatted with Magic Jack and they suggested that I try a a/c powered USB HUB Since usb ports only put out 5v I don't think this will help. Also the problem is that Magic Jack does not emit enough REN for distance and multiple phones

In doing some research, there is a web site for Mr. Sandman in Chicago that explains more than I can comphrehend but they sell a a/c powered telephone ring booster. Apparently it takes a lot of current to make a bunch of phones ring and since I am running a long way to the telephones from the magic jack this may be the ticket. Has any one else tried this?

The device cost about 3 times what the magic jack cost but since I have Direct TV and have to have a land line connected to their receiver I will have to bite the bullet. It cost about $135 with shipping

I fired ATT local service and their crummy DSL for poor service (in the middle of a call I would get "If you would like to make a call please hang up and dial again")and horrible bulk mail since they switched to Yahoo for their email. I switched to cable modem road runner and am happy with that.

Magic Jack is ok except for the quirks and I am new to VOIP so any pointers would be a help

What Mr. Sandman says in his long disertation is that the chinese make most of the phones and they may be using specs that will work on standard ATT but not on VOIP.

Seems like alot of discussion around on getting phones to ring.

I think the interesting scenario here is when people want to be able to connect the MJ to house wiring to have phones connected remotely work normally (call/ring).

First, it is important to have phones which have REN's be as small as possible. I started with MJ connected to my home wiring (ie connect MJ to a wall phone socket hoping to have a phone elsewhere in the house work normally). I was using a TRU8885 with 2handsets (is AC powered) - the REN on this phone is a paltry .08 . I could call normally, but not get a ring.

I had an old computer with USB ver 1.0, so I first got a cheap USB 2.0 card which I installed which did not fix the problem - it is reasonable to assume these cards have sufficient power.

I tested the phone directly attached to the MJ (4ft phone cable) and it worked. I tested likewise with a 20ft cable and it worked. I reconnected to my house network and it did not work with the phone attached to phone jack at my desk.

I traced the lines in my basement (I was already disconnected from outside landline connection) contemplating eliminating unnecessary wiring and lo and behold I discovered in a corner of my basement that an old bell-ringer phone was connected to my house network! When I disconnected this phone (and the obvious voltage load associated with it), my phone rang perfectly.

Here's my conclusion:
1. use a phone with lowest possible REN (less than 1 certainly, closer to .1 desireable).
2. don't worry about powered hubs if already connected to computer's USB since it is likely sufficiently powered.
3. don't get into power boosting phone systems (see #1)
4. eliminate high-REN other devices from phone network
5. run a test of of phone direct connected to MJ - if this doesn't work, likely your phone is not AC powered or is too high a REN.

Despite MagicJack's sales hype, it DOES NOT work with all phones. In particular, it will not ring phones with DECT 6.0 chipsets (internal electronic guts) from certain manufacturers. This includes an ATT name-brand phone that I returned because it wouldn't ring, as well as a Motorola name-brand L402C (manufactured by Binatone) that I bought to replace it. Both phones recognized that a call was coming in, and caller ID even showed the caller's number. But the chipset that triggers the ringer and the answering machine doesn't recognize the ring signal, so the phones won't ring or take messages. This is NOT a power issue and a USB booster will NOT help in this case. According to techies on other websites, the MagicJack outputs a 50 volt 20 Hz pulsed D.C. ring signal. Most phones (especially crappy old phones) are happy with that. But the aforementioned state-of-the-art DECT phones will apparently recognize only the standard 40-to-90 volt sine-wave A.C. ringer signal that phone companies have used forever. So the only thing that I can add to MagicJack's advice, "try a different phone," is, "try a crappy old phone." Until they publish a list of phones that will/will not work that's probably the best advice.

I have a similar, although bit worse issue. Phone doesn't ring, nor has dial tone and can't dial. I really am not concerned with getting those to work. If somehow I could make the ***computer*** ring and use the phone to talk, I'd be happy.

Does anyone know of a hack to make the software show all devices available?

First check to see if your phone is on mute. Mine was! When I unmuted it -it finally rang.
Otherwise, go to magicjack menu on top left corner of MJ dial pad, go to volume/headset control- and make sure the telephone button is checked.
When I couldn't get my phone to ring(because it was muted) I checked "speakers" and the computer rang when I called my magicjack number- so atleast I was getting notified.

Don't look at the title, it's confusing and not the real cause of the problem. But the problem was very much like yours: missed calls, phone doesn't right, all incoming calls go to voicemail directly.

The MagicJack Plus does not allow my phone to ring, although it does work fine with the original MagicJack. It's a Motorola DECT 6.0 phone. I resolved this issue today by switching to a Panasonic DECT 6.0 phone. I was fairly certain it was the phone, because of my experience with the old MagicJack (I went through 3 phones before finding one that would work with the old one... odd it now won't with the supposedly improved MagicJack Plus). It's nice to be able to shut my computer down when I like now. I went with the Panasonic when I realized the success many have had with the brand. I tested pretty thoroughly today and all seems great.

I've been dealing with this with a new Magic Jack Plus. On thing I noticed is that after I plug a phone into the wall jack where I have MJ+ backfeeding it from another jack, the phone won't ring until I powercycle the MJ+. Just un plug it from the powerstrip for a few seconds and plug it back in. Then the phone will ring. So far I have a Uniden cordless system working (REN of .08 or .0B - I really think it says 'B'!!) and a 12 year old Sharp fax. Still need to get a splitter to lug in my other Uniden cordless system (same weird REN molded into the plastic on the bottom!)

My phone will not ring. I use the phone with a magicjack plus. It doesn't matter if it is plugged into the wall or into my computer. I tried a different phone and it didn't make any difference. Both phones work on other lines.

There are other threads on this site I think, and probably other sites about not ringing. I recall some said they would buy a new phone and just return it if it doesn't work with MJ+. I think a few people thought Panasonic models tended to work better.

Meanwhile I got the splitter, plugged in the second Uniden cordless system, and it rings (had to power cycle the MJ+ though before it would ring!). No complaints from this MJ+ user as long as you are willing to devote a little effort to set up the system. Should save us some money.

EDIT - silly me - the panasonic reference was earlier in this thread!!!

I am a network engineer and have identified an issue surrounding magic jack and magic jack plus. When calling from a cell phone utilizing a Verizon network extender (femtocell) device the cell phone will never hear the ring. It appears to be a routing issue with the femtocell. As soon as you are out of range and register to the cell tower (macrocell) you will hear the rings just fine. When you check the phone call counts received at the phone on the magic jack you will see that ALL calls actually made it to the phone. The callers on the femtocell just didn't hear the audible ring.

I installed the magic jack app on my iphone and I had a similar issue, I could dial out but was not receiving any incoming alerts or ringing. I finally figured out the solution. the setting that needed to be changed was not on my phone or device but rather on the main mymagicjack panel.I think this solution might help anyone facing a similar problem.Heres what i did 1,)Log into your mymagicjackaccount on any pc with your user registered email and password 2.) check to see that your actual phone number is listed i=next to the device you are having an issue, If you see a number like *1762739273* instead of your phone number delete it and put your phone number there , when done log out, and now delete the magic jack app on the device that is having an issue. and reinstall the app.whether an iPhone,ipad etc. make sure your notifications are set to alert and it should be working now .My phone now works and rings when i get a call. the problem for me was simply when i downloaded and installed the app, i set a free number which was then set in my main user account. the problem is not with your instrument or its settings. please try what i have said and see if the problem is resolved. an Important note: make sure after making the changes on the mymagicjack,com account section ,you must now delete the app from your phone or device and reinstall it. I hope this helped some people get there iphone and ipads and devices in the issue of receiving calls.

What kind of problem is that I think that there would be 3 kind of problems behind this situation that you can not use the right uses of it.

1: There would be service restrictions that no body can call you up.. chek this up by making call to the service centre.
2: The settings must not set of your phone so that is why you are not avail this. You firstly restore the whole settings and set them according to the instructions secondly.
3: Try to change set and replace it with new one.

It's not always about REN, though it can be problematic.

go to my.magicjack.com. Log in. Pull down from "Call Features" to "Advanced". Make sure each device you own is set to:

Select Service
[checked] I elect to accept outgoing and incoming service

Static Configuration
[checked] use DHCP

Are these set correctly?

NEXT

Pull down from "Call Features" to "Voicemail On/Off/Delay".
Set the voicemail delay to 45 seconds or more. Any shorter, and it's possible it will just go directly to voicemail without your phone picking up. If you still don't get enough time, or it doesn't ring 4 times before going to voicemail, set the delay to a minute or longer.

Are these set correctly for your situation?
