Handset dies but computer still ok

I am running a MJ on an iMac. If I plug the device in everything is fine, I get dialtone in the connected handset. After some undetermined period the handset goes dead but if someone calls the computer still receives the call and I can talk to the other party. I can also make calls from the computer but the only way to use the handset is to unplug and start over. Any way to keep the handset alive? Thanks
