MJ makes "beeping" noise like someone is pressing
I know that there has been other topics about this, with no real answers. And as of today (6/17/09), I am still having problems when I am on the phone.
It sounds like someone is pressing buttons on the phone, at first it was only the person on the other line and now it is on my end and the other users end.
This problem has only started in the past month or so, what is wrong? is there a fix or what?
I know its not my phones, nor my computers. I have it on an idle computer. I know a lot of other people having the same problem, but are there any fixes or what? Please help! thanks.

Class Action Lawsuit
I would like to see someone start up a Class Action Lawsuit. You can't return it to Radio Shack and you can't return it to Magicjack. It is not what is advertised. Pcmag saids Magicjack call quality is amzing-almost to good to be true. If horrible is true good to be true.
Someone should start a Class Action Lawsuit Against the stores selling it and not taking it back, magicjack for not taking it back, and last of all those promoting it as amazing for the fraud.
If you know of any Class Action Lawsuits I would love to join.

A lawsuit over a $40.00 dongle? Yeah, good idea. "I could have bought several Big Macs with that. Maybe the lawyers can make it right again."
Have you tried the fixes in the other thread? The talk4free update seems to have helped most people. I'm sure that MJ is working on it as well. But not because of some lame threat of lawsuits. It makes business sense for them to fix it.
If you're still having the problem, you can do more good by reporting it through their email and online mind numbing chat. Over and over. Until they get it.
And if you email, you might want to use several disposable email addresses. If they're smart, they'll catch on and block the repeats.

I live in Europe and had MJ mailed to me from a friend in the US, for a few months it was great! No problem whatsoever! But then these beeps started coming. I thought I was the only one! And what's with the random numbers that show up? I also get symbols, each one gives a beep. Most of the time I don't hear them but I can tell when the person on the other end does because I see a new number. I have tried both the fix and shut off the speakers, although I don't see what use that has since I use the phone. Tried with a new phone also.
I typed in chat support, until my fingers where bleeding! It seems to me that on the other end the agents are like robots, they are all trained to say and have you do the same fixes over and over again. I know the steps by heart, nothing helps! I told them I have done that already, over and over, Not going to do it again!
And if you ask a question they don't even answer! And what is that recovery tool for? Does any one know? I always get device not found!
What device should it find? I asked them more than once, they don't answer that question, I bet they don't even know!
But man are they polite! If anyone ever finds a solution please post it! It is a shame not to be able to fix this. I am so disappointed. I wonder if these numbers that are added in automatic, could mean that someone is also hearing my conversation. If they don't fix this issue I doubt it that who ever has it will renew it again.
Please keep me posted if there is a fix that works!

Hopz, are you saying the beeping problem is common across the board? I've done the fix, and people still suddenly start saying, "Hello? Hello?" in the middle of a conversation.
Also, do you know what those random numbers indicate when they come up? I hope each number does not represent a beep, because I get a long string of them.
Thanks,
Anne

Beeps are gone finally on my setup
FYI
I have been struggling with this also and just yesterday it got fixed.
What was happening was in the DSL supply to my house. Over the last three months I had been having momentary unexplained loss of DSL signal for just a split second but it would knock the internet off for a moment... I believe now that is what was causing the beeps.
Finally the landline went completely out four days ago. But the DSL was still working ...and the beeps were still there. So finally I had a reason to have Qwest come out to find the problem. They determined it was a damaged cable feeding this residential area.
So as it turns out, the damaged Qwest cable ...external to my home... needed repair. Until the landline went completely out neither MagicJack nor Qwest had a solution.
Qwest repaired the cable yesterday and the beeps have disappeared.

Hey weave777
I hope it works for good on your end, because it can't be that everyone has a DSL issue. Anyway I noticed that the beeps occur only if someone talks, yesterday they put me on hold for quite a while, no beeps, and not a single number has been added to the one I dialed, as soon as I started to talk, there they where again! Most of the times you don't hear beeps, only the person that you are talking to, but you can tell that it beeped because another random number has been added for each beep the other party hears. Ciao

I notced one thing though, since I am located in italy, if I call for hosting support in the US, that is 24/7 and in the US it is night time, and possibly very few are using the phone with MJ, here it is morning, it seems to be much better. But if I call in the evening my time, I get a long strings of numbers and beeps. Could be there are too many using the MJ that could be the reason go figure

Anne:
Do a Google search on annoying beep tones on VOIP, you will be surprised HOW LONG this issue has been going on with VOIP!! WAY before the MJ was even born.
Some people seem to have the problem more than others. It has something to do with our voice freq generating the tones. Some people's voices do it more than others. One tip is to try not to talk directly into the mic of your phone. Try keeping it a tad away from you, see if that helps. Also be sure you have the speaker and mic setting either all the way down or at best 1/3 of the way up in the volume/headset control section in the MJ settings. And of course make sure you have run the 6/19 update. Even after all that there are some who still have the beeping problem.

The beeps you hear are DTMF talkoff. Look it up and you can read all about it. It's a problem when using out-of-band dtmf signalling. MagicJack used to use inband signalling, but I suspect they want to use a more compressed voice codec at some point (for which, inband signalling doesn't work). Many hardware manufacturers have filters built-in which reduce or eliminate DTMF talkoff, although Linksys still seems to have problems on some of their adapters. It would seem that Tigerjet and/or MagicJack also haven't put in appropriate filters to eliminate this problem. It shouldn't be a problem if a VOIP provider has done their homework.
We are trying to consolidate this topic, please move the discussion to this thread:

Have chatted with MagicJack (MJ) support on 4 occasions concerning constant beeping when on the phone. It sounds like someone is pushing the phone keys. On these 4 occasions I have done every fix MJ asked and they have reset the device on their end but nothing stopped the beeping. MJ chat even took over my computer to check my modem and router and said everything was alright. I have 4 phone numbers with MJ, 3 phones and 1 fax. All 3 phones had the problem. I suspect my fax did to, because my faxes would rarely go through the first time. My IP is Cox cable. Yesterday I ran a speed test on my computer and it showed 21 MB/sec download and 14 MB/sec upload speeds. I have had the same modem for 10 years, but the speed has more than doubled in that time. After further research I discovered my modem was DOCSIS 2.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). The DOCSIS 2.0 is not adequate for the speeds indicated. I checked the Cox web site to see what modems were compatible with their system. They recommended several and all were DOCSIS 3.0. The 1st on their list was a Cisco DPC3010. I found it on Amazon for $89.95. I called my local Cox store and to my surprise they had it for the same price and in stock. I went to the store, purchased it, they registered the MAC address for me at the store, so it became a simple plug and play installation. The beeps in all my phones is gone. Also I ran another speed test and had 31 MB/sec download and 24 MB/sec upload. I hope this information is helpful.
