Yeah, I still had hope for it until finding the reviews on FB. I guess I am now forced to try and recoup the funds that they were willing to remove from my acc. Wish me luck!!

I have managed to find Jon of getpartsforless.com on ebay @ laptopartsforles and got my $ back. He told me that the expansion was out of stock and refunded me.
Now I really wish I had picked up one of these with the expansion off of ebay. They are near as hard to find as hen's teeth.

Good news for getting the money back..

There's a German seller on ebay with T5735 w/PCI expansion modules http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-t5735-Thin ... 20e2da7917

Doesn't look like they have the modules on their own though :/

Thanks 985, that is a great find!!

I am trying to contact a seller in Australia to see if they will ship the expansion kit to the U.S.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

It's been quiet here for a while.. hopefully everyone's okay after Black Friday...

@Wheezer have you had any luck yet?

Could someone point me to a ribbon cable and 44pin ide to sata device that is confirmed working?
I've gotten two different male to female IDE leads and nether have worked, I've reset BIOS to defaults as suggested in another post.

either I've a dodgy IDE->Sata device or male->female IDE's are unliked by the board

This is the exact cable I am using. It has worked in both the T5735 and the GT7720.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-cm-44-Pin-Fe ... 2c7d2cf3ce
This is the exact SATA to 44 pin IDE adapter I am using as well.

I got another T5740 but it has a password on the bios and I can't figure out a way to crack or remove it? Does anyone have any ideas? Does removing the CMOS battery do anything?

985> In my experience with these adapters they do not like SSDs and will usually hang when attempting to install windows. The same adapter works perfectly with an old spinning platter style HDD.

T5735> Try pulling the cmos battery and holding the power button down for about 5-10 seconds. Hopefully this will hard reset the bios allowing you in. I have no experience with the T5740 but this usually does it for most systems.
I bought one of those ide/sata adapters from that seller on ebay and it did not function at all. I contacted the seller and they sent me another that did function but I still had the issue with the SSDs not working. I have several different manufactured SSDs and none want to shake hands with the logic that is on these adapter boards.

I guess I just got lucky with the two adapters I got because neither one of them has given me any trouble at all on the three different model thin clients I have used them on. I have one of those small cables like you linked but it just is not long enough to practically use. I was able to use it in the T5735 with the little 1.8" 4200rpm hard drive however. I hope everything is alright with MOMO as we have not heard from him in a little while.

985> I was going to purchase that TC from the German seller on ebay when I noticed North America is excluded from the sellers shipping ability. Another dead end..
Thanks for taking the time to find it though. :)

I honestly have not had time to even try it. Things have been really crazy lately but I am hoping to mess around with it tomorrow afternoon some. I picked up another thin client from work made by cisco I am going to play around with as well. It has a 1.6ghz dual core APU in it. :)

I don't believe that a Turion will work in these? I will have to go back and look at all of the posts MOMO and I made but I thought that it would work as well but I don't think they ever made a Turion in socket s1 which the T5730 is.

Hey all... I've been pre-occupied with my stuff...still waiting for it to finish...!
Thanks for all your concern....w/ "where's MoMo", posts... :)

@T5735
The Turion X2 does work in he 5730/35 if it's S1G1 socket. (Both 1's if it's wrong letters I'm using :) ) check my signature.
You were wondering if the Ultra Turion X2 would work in them, last time.
Those were the different sockets (I think S1G2 and G3 types)

I'm still here, just not getting your latest posts eMail notices, if I don't login after the first notice, but I do look-in from time to time.

@T5735
That's the normal way it works on this site.
If you don't re-login after the first post notice, you don't get another one for any additional posts.
It's an anti spam method, in case you don't want notices from here any more.

To get someone's attention, a PM is needed, like if krzysiek841 isn't checking in here to see the posts, you'd need to PM him to have a notice sent to him again.

I'm still here, and look-in without always logging in sometimes.
So if you need to get my attention, and I haven't replied by posting, PM me.

If I'm not dead, I'll reply (I hope) :)

Thanks for the information and welcome to the thread. What are you using your thin client for? It must be up to what brand and type of ram you use because I tried it with a couple of different combo's and it didn't work as you can see from the pictures I posted earlier in this thread using the same program CPU-Z as you did.

I'm using 2x512MB Hynix modules HYMP564S64CP6-Y5.
I was having trouble with the included HP memory and another one from Geil and i thought i didn't solder the socket correctly so i reheated some pins on the socket that looked like they weren't properly soldered. But i got hold of the hynix modules and it works fine. Right now it's running a small dos program on XP embedded from HP. I also tested them with a benchmarking tool called aida64.

Hi chriscross
As T5735 said, welcome to the thread. :)

I'm confused by some of your statements.
You needed to solder the socket for a second memory module into your ThinClient?
Is this a T5730/35 ThinClient? ... Or a GT7725 ...?

Also, .. you're using a 64-bit version of a benchmarking tool (aida64) on a 32-bit version of embedded XP..?
Or, do you have a 64-bit embedded XP version?

I'm not doubting you, just needing clarification if XP embedded was ever released in a 64-bit version image, and if your dual-channel mode is working on a GT7725 or T5730/35 system.

You may have discovered something new..!

@T5735
If dual-channel mode works on a 32-bit OS, maybe there's something strange going-on, when trying dual-channel mode in 64-bit operating systems on these ThinClients.

This could explain why the blue-screen crash happens with a windows 64-bit OS and when memory over 3.5 GB is used with it.

I soldered the socket on my T5730. The winXP embedded is 32bit and AIDA64 it's just the name of the program :)
Also i forgot to mention that i soldered a CF card connector and used a 8gb card to install Windows Thin PC (which is a version of Windows Embedded Standard 7) and it also works fine.
I didn't install/test any 64bit operating system...yet.

Thanks for explaining..!
So you've proven that Dual-Channel mode will work on a T5730...!
That is major news dude..!

Our other friend, krzysiek841 will be shocked, and happy to hear that.

I'm amazed..! too.. :!:

Are the two 512MB modules actually rated to be Dual-Channel from Hynix?

**EDITED**
I found the specs of the RAM you used (PDF)
http://www.hynix.com/datasheet/pdf/modu ... 0.6%29.pdf

There's no distinct mention of dual-channel specific, so other similar modules with higher capacity should also work.
Maybe Hynix chips are better for Dual-Channel
Now I can't wait for my personal stuff to conclude, so I can add that 2nd socket and try my two Hynix 2GB modules. :!:
****
I'm wondering what's different, when trying higher capacity 1GB or 2GB sticks,
using either the same 32-bit full versions of Windows XP or even a 64-bit OS, like Windows 7 or 8.1

Is your BIOS the latest version, or the older one?
Did you also add the extra capacitors and resistors for the second socket?
(Not just the 4-pack resistors, but the single ones, with capacitors)

Momo beat me to the question I was going to ask. Did you just solder on the second socket or did you also add the capacitors on the bottom of the board? Also what socket did you use as your second memory socket?

1. The bios installed is the latest. v2.02.
2. Yes i soldered all the missing components (the resistor packs, R473 and C247)
3. The socket was bought from TME:

Could you let me know what value capacitor you used?

T5735 measured the resistor R473 as being 4.7k ohm,
but the capacitor C247 was never measured, just speculated what it usually was, in circuits like this.

krzysiek841 got all his additional smaller components from his second damaged T5730/35
But no one actually ever measured the capacitors.

Plus, the fact you didn't use the other capacitors, on the other-side of the board, is also interesting to me. Maybe it's better not to use them, after all.

We all speculated that making it similar to the GT7725 resistors and capacitors was what is needed, since that Thincliect is supposed to be supporting Dual-channel.

Dual channel

Post by Wheezer »

Hello guys, and welcome to the forum Chris. That is very interesting news indeed.
I have yet to get either of my TCs to run happily. T5730/GT7725
I've invested some $ into a T610 and installed a 120G ssd and loaded win7/64. This thing actually plays games at a high frame rate!! With 4Gb of ram installed it happily shares out 2Gb and plays smooth.
I may end up butchering the GT7725 for its second ram and other items since it DOES NOT support dual channel and no longer wants to post.
I have had no luck getting either of my T5730's running stable. I am convinced the factory heat-pipe is just not doing the job.

My GT7725 is still working just fine as my HTPC but I recently got a Cisco 6215 which has identical specs as the T610 and as soon as I can get the spare cash I am going to get a small 64gb SSD to put into it and probably replace the GT7725.

Hi Wheezer
What exactly is not working well with the T5730 that it's not working happily?
The heat-pipe needs a fan blowing from the side to help cool it down.
Especially if you're using a higher speed CPU.

Also, possibly a stronger power pack, at least double the Amps of the original one, to be safe.

As for the GT7725, it too may support dual-channel, if the discovery of the T5730 supporting it, is fact. You may not want to dismantle it yet.

I can't speak of the GT7725, but T5735 said his is working well, and my T5730 is humming along, happily, so maybe I can help you make yours happy too. :)

I see no reason why all your toys can't work well.

What speed CPU is in the T5730 ?
What amp rating is the power-pack?
What OS is on it?
How much RAM memory?
What type of system drive is being used?
What graphics card, (if you used the PCIe expansion riser) ?

All these things play a very big part in how happy the T5730 will be.

As long as one persons works well (like mine and T5735's) others should also work well, if the same conditions are met. (Or at least close to the same)

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I found a 64-bit OS works better for graphics playback of HD content, and you need to be using a PCIe x16 graphics card with the HP riser x1 socket cut open for it.

Otherwise it may not perform as well as mine does, with the stock graphics-chip.

After getting the same results from two different T5730 builds with the same video card. I have come to the conclusion that it is the video card. It is a Zotac nVidia 610 512meg pci. I was unable to find a pci-e riser for these TCs. So my only option was to try and use the pci riser I was able to locate.
As far as the GT7725, I believe I may have damaged the pci-e riser attempting to install it into the T5730. Because the GT7725 will no longer post with or without the riser installed.

Wow yeah, the risers are very specific to each separate TC.
Some of the ground connections of each riser card are in different pin locations for that connector....
...and can cause a direct short to ground where it's not meant to be.

What riser did you use, that you said 'you were able to locate' if it wasn't the one meant for the T5730 ?

Was it the HP riser meant for the GT7725 ?

I think I remember seeing a post mentioning a similar event, earlier in this thread.
Was that yours?

Sad to hear ...

But if you used the riser meant for the GT7725, on the GT7725...
using that with ANY x16 graphics card shouldn't damage the GT7725.
Especially if not being plugged in now, that TC should still post.

That's the strange part of this.
I can understand the T5730 being 'zapped' by it, but the TC it's meant for shouldn't be negatively affected...
even if the graphics board wasn't working somehow.

Unless the riser was damaged before you tried it.
That's why I'm curious where you got it, and if it was meant to use on the GT7725.

Wow, ... a two punch knock-out.. :!:

Now I'm even sadder for you, losing 3 of your TC's
2 T5730's and your GT7725

There are fuses on the T5730, at various spots on the circuit-board...
that don't look like the standard fuse.
They look like a larger SMD style resistor.

Most likely, those same or similar fuse parts are also on the GT7725's board.

Maybe one of those may have opened, stopping the GT7725 (or even T5730) from posting.

The part number of that component would have a 'F' with a number after it...
For example...
F101
As opposed to the other parts, with it showing R or C or L with the number next to lt.

If you have a multi-meter, with a continuity check, you could use it to see if that part measures opened...
... or if it has a resistance measurement setting, using it on the lowest resistance setting is good too.

If the fuse is good, measuring across it would show as close to zero-ohms as possible.

If your interested to have a go at it, I can check T5735's photos of his GT7725 to point out some of the fuse parts for you.

GT7725

Post by Wheezer »

The TC that died was the GT7725. Both of the T5730s are working fine except when I use the Zotac card with the correct pci riser.
I think I may have damaged the GT7725 pic-e riser when I tried to use it in a T5730. Then damaged the GT7725 when I installed that pci-e riser back into it. These are only theories but I have been fairly accurate in these diagnostics before.
The T5730s seem to be the best of the TCs that are available for little $.
The T610 I purchased is now residing at my best friends house performing very well and playing W.O.T. and F.O.E. and ANNO.

if you put JUST the correct riser into the T5730s (without the Zotac card)
do the both T5730s post and boot up?
If so, then something got (or was) damaged on the Zotac card somehow.
Wheezer wrote: I think I may have damaged the GT7725 pic-e riser when I tried to use it in a T5730. Then damaged the GT7725 when I installed that pci-e riser back into it.
If the GT7725 riser is damaged, it would usually be by popping OPEN a wiring trace on its board, or pop open a resistor, or other small part...usually.
It doesn't seem likely it would short-out a part, that would cause damage by also shorting or blowing out a part on the TC...UNLESS there was already a short on the riser-card, or just the Zotac card is damaged.

I don't remember if you mentioned....
Did it all work before you placed everything in the wrong TC?
(That is ...Did the GT7725 work with and without the Zotac card and riser, before?)

It's still possible one or more of the hidden SMD fuse parts blew-out.
I may be able to deduce what area may get affected by the wrong riser, by viewing the ground areas on that card different from the T5730, to narrow-down where to look for the possibly blown SMD fuses.

Everything known, first starts as a theory ;)

Yeah, the T5730 is very upgradeable, and less costly,..but the GT7725 is very similar, too, and costing more, should at least be looked-over before becoming rubbish.
:)

**Edited**
I also just realized something you said...
The Zotac nVidia 610 512meg you tried isn't a PCIe card...it's just PCI.

Did you ever also switch PCI risers from/in each other's ThinClient?
(Sorry if you already said...I'm just now realizing you mentioning PCIe AND PCI risers) :)

When you tried the GT7725 PCIe riser in the T5730, was there a graphics card in it too?
If it was empty, it's even more possible just that riser has damage.
If it had a PCIe g-card in it, which one? Maybe THAT card was/is damaged.

The GT7725 may not have been able to handle the choice of using the Zotac nVidia 610 512meg PCI card.
Maybe it couldn't handle the higher wattage needs of the graphics card.

I still need to see if the Zotac nVidia 610 512meg PCI card was ever working in the GT7725... so that last statements validity is pending your answer :)

GT7725

Post by Wheezer »

The T5730s ran fine with the Zotac pci card until I ran windows exp. index. It would reboot when it got to the DirectX10 constant buffer assessment. And would reboot when attempting to load either F.O.E. or ANNO. Heavy cache browser games. Video card issues more than likely.
The GT7725 will no longer post after having attempted to use its riser with a pci-e EVGA nVidia 8600GT in a T5730. And you are probably right about having damaged the video card as well. I'll need to setup a desktop for testing it.

GT7725

Post by Wheezer »

Prior to my mistake. The GT7725 would post with a flashing cursor if I used the EVGA nVidia 8600GT. And go no further. But would function perfectly with the stock ATI FireMV 2250 installed. (wish i had left well enough alone)
The Zotac and the GT7725 never crossed paths.

Wow, yeah, what a mess.
I'm guessing the EVGA nVidia 8600GT is too much (wattage wise) for both systems. I'm also guessing you were using stock power-packs too, on each when trying the card?
(Actually both the PCI and PCIe cards you chose may be more wattage than the standard power-packs can supply.)

I bet you really feel silly  but believe it or not, it still may be the SMD fuse that blew out on the GT7725. Either near the on-board graphics chip or CPU or near around that area, or near around the PCIe socket on the board.

Well...I don't know if you have a multi-meter, or even know how to test the power-pack or do the continuity measurements to test what went bad, but it's still possible it's something simple, if not obvious.

By obvious, I mean actually seeing a blown PCB trace pattern, or a part cracked.

Oh well...I'm here to offer assistance if you decide to try anything of a repair diagnostic on it.

Power packs.

Post by Wheezer »

I use a 19v 7.9a power pack for the GT7725. And was using a 12v 12.5a power pack on the T5730s. Lots of extra juice there if needed.
Thanks for your suggestions. Any constructive advice is greatly appreciated.

Does the GT7725 stock PSU have less amperage than the near 8 amps the one you used has?...
Because I think it's close to what the original one has, from what T5735 said in a past post.

Yes, the PSU you're using on the T5730 is way enough...but the PCIe on-board socket or PCI and PCIe risers may not like the wattage that graphic card needs. :)

You never said if the riser cards installed by themselves stopped the T5730 from booting.
I'm just wondering if the risers are also damaged too....but you don't need to try it if you feel it may damage something again...on the T5730.

The stock power pack rating is 18.5v @ 6.5a for the GT7725.
The two T5730 TCs work fine with the one pci riser I was able to find. I couldn't find a pci-e riser for them, why I tried the GT's pci-e riser in it. And the ensuing issues.

4.7uF or 1uF...i don't recall. I believe that is a filter capacitor for VddSPD.
On the other side i didn't solder the C243 capacitor; i think it is superfluous since it is in parallel with another capacitor.

T5730 update

Post by Wheezer »

Hey all, just wanted to let everyone know why I was having an issue with the T5730 and the Zotac card. The Zotac is a fan-less GPU, but has a pin-out for a fan supply. So I connected a fan to it to try and cool the CPU. Although it did spin the fan, it was too much current draw through the card. So when things got demanding it would just shut down. After removing the fan the system ran windows exp. index and scored, (CPU-4.9 MEM-5.2 Aero-4.4 Game-4.6 HDD-4.3) not bad!! :D

Yes...!! Great.... Especially for just a 2.2 GHz CPU.
I thought something was too much wattage...didn't expect the FAN though -- wow!

My T5730 gets a range of around 5.3 to 5.8 on the Win Exp. with my 2.4GHz CPU.
my 3D graphics test giving me the lowest rating of 3.7
I am after all using just x1 speed of the PCIe slot. :)

I wanted to ask you, does the TC's front panel Drive Activity LED blink when you access your HD ?

The SATA to IDE adapter I have seems to 'short-out' my LED, when it's installed.

My adapter doesn't effect the drive activity light. At-least, not that I ever noticed. I think I have mentioned that my adapter will not allow me to use an SSD. :x
I also found that the 2.2GHz Turion doesn't seem to use all 800mhz of the RAM while my 2.0GHz Turion does. RAM score was 5.2 w/2.2Ghz and 5.5 w/2.0GHz. CPUs scored exactly the same at 4.9.
I also need to run a 10" box fan on the system or it will cook itself and shut down.

My adapter has another LED activity light on it, and I suspect it's not needed, with it's associated series resister, and may be loading down the TC's LED

T5735 said his adapter doesn't stop his TC from blinking its front LED either. Plus his adapter doesn't have a LED on it for drive activity, either.
So I will surely be removing mine now...too ;)

As for your SSD not working with it...
That's strange...you'd think if it's able to recognize a real hard drive, it would also see the SSD ...but maybe there's some special commands missing in its on-chip language for the control codes of anything other than real hard drives.

I wonder if any of these adapters are made to see anything other than real hard drives. Or if there's something missing in the hardware of the board these adapter controller chips use, that standard controllers have.

Something's wrong...! It shouldn't get that hot..! Does it idle at 800MHz?
If it's not idling at 800MHz at times, it may have a similar issue where it's being driven by some background application.

T5735 had a similar issue with his GT7725, maybe your T5730 has a similar problem as his TC had, not allowing it to idle at times, at 800MHz

I'll need to search the posts from pages past, to try to find his cause of it..

GT7725

Post by Wheezer »

As far as I know the T5730 utilizes the dual channel ram even with just the one stick being available.
When I compare the Windows Index Exp. between the GT7725 and the T5730 with the exact same memory stick.
T5730 + 2GB PC2 5300S 555 = 5.2 w/TL-64 @ 2.2GHz
T5730 + 2GB PC2 6400S 666 = 5.5 w/TL-60 @ 2.0GHz
GT7725 + 2+2GB PC2 5300S 555 = 4.6 w/ZM-84 @ 2.3GHz
Conclusion, the T5730 is using dual channel and the GT7725 is not. Even with a matched pair installed. And the CPU score never goes above 2.9 in this GT7725. If there is a way to open that second channel up this thing could be a performer.
I do not know why it started posting again. Just glad it did. :)

There's still one combination of RAM and CPU I don't see you trying/listing.

The PC2 6400S RAM 666 with the TL-64 @ 2.2GHz
And the same stick, with the GT7725

I'm still going to need to test the actual data-lines of both RAM sockets.
All data-line trace should be separate, to the CPU. As 128-bits.
So if any of the data-lines have continuity to the same data-line on the other socket, it can't possibly be dual-channel.

That test needs to wait until I can keep the TC opened without needing to rush putting it back together, until my personal stuff is finished.

Maybe one or all of those SMD fuses, are 'automatically resettable'
I've seen automatically resettable fuses sold, so it is possible.
