To answer -- No, they won't work between models.
I've found that all the expansion cards actually have physical ground connections, to the chassis ground, at different locations of pins, that are different from each other, model to model.

Hi, thanks for stopping by.
I've been busy with other stuff and had to put this site aside for awhile...
...you'd have gotten a faster response.

Yeah, since the MagicJack Plus, not needing a computer to work, plus Magicjack offering numbers that work from your WiFi based VoIP phone or App...
...maybe that's why it's almost a ghost-town here, for Magicjack stuff.

It seems my Modding Post is mostly the active one, which still surprises me even now.

Many people have converted (and modded) their T5730/35 to the Dual Core faster speed, ...to do media playback and stuff.

I made mine into a television PVR (Personal Video Recorder)
As well as HD editor, but I plan on getting, or making, a faster smaller system, soon, that will put the T5730 back at just HDTV recorder.

What did you want to make yours do?

I've just 'decommissioned' mine from being a web filter (untangled) performed very well overall.

How I need to work out what to use it for now..

I've not really got a need for a media machine since my main rig is hooked up to the tele / configured for streaming to mobile devices

I did manage to get my self a PCI riser (not express

)
how bad is the onboard for say 720p video
and say QuakeLive? (its the only game I play these days :p)

Your web filter sounds interesting.
Was it Linux based, or windows?

Can it create a "black-list" of IP#'s that I want to block from getting in?

As for the video capabilities of the built-in video chips...
I got smoother playback of video with the PCIe card with the riser adapter, and a 64-bit OS.
If you're trying to use it for 3D gaming...maybe not good enough for that.

Playing videos is different, and faster, using the PCIe card but it's not too good for 3D gaming because it's only using the 1x speed of a 16x card.

I have a theory that the T5730/35 can handle 4x speed, because the original riser card has 3 more locations (Test-Points) brought to the card board pattern, but not used on the connector, that look like it's 3 more PCIe lanes.

I'm not going to do anything with that knowledge yet, because I'm looking into making a 6th generation i7 system for myself...but my T5730 is still working.

So, other than all this T5730 stuff...what's been doing with you?

logging up - I'll be honest I didn't use it to stop the intruders,

Untangled is Linux based I believe sort of like it's own OS, you can install it with a GUI or with out i think and it's accessible from a web browser.

Untngled overall looked much easier to use than Smoothwall Express and an easier install too

I mostly needed to try and stop apps like KiK and Tinder from being used (with teens in the house and knowing what flies round the internet) I wanted to make sure they didn't see things that they shouldn't / didn't need to see at a young age..

It was only the free version (the paid one is more powerful and has more fetaures) you do get a free trial of the fill version though

but now looking at untangled again I've noticed its got and OpenVPN module, this is going to be my next venture I think - I've been trying to do one with the built in windows with limited success (but then that may be my work place blocking the required ports) I can check these features when I've re-installed it

Also for anyone interested - you can install Server 2012 r2 Standard on the t5730 too (with that standard processor 64bit too)

I guess the only really way to find out would be to try it, I'll try installing Win10 and report on status then copy Quake 3 Arena over and report back again :p

Then I'll go for Untangled again

oh this is all being installed onto:
Sempron 2100+
2GD RAM
Crucial CT128MX100 SSD

everything else is standard.

early update - Win10 install 64bit seems to keep failing, I'm able to boot, format / delete / create partitions then click next, get the start of the install then just black :/

Persistence paid off, didn't delete the partitions that were created on the previous blackscreen and the install carried on and finished.

Just copying Q3A over now and i'll take alook at FPS (with out any windows updates)

If it would run from that little Nano-Router, you wouldn't need a dedicated PC to be ON all the time.
But, being it runs the OpenWRT firmware, OpenVPN and other 'packages' are available for it too.
I made one into a WiFi Camera that accepts any USB camera that supports Linux (and that's most of them, it seems)

There are also OpenWRT packages that do internet filtering as well.
That was going to be my next attempt to use these little nano routers.
I'm thinking it may need to be OpenWRT based to run, so maybe the UnTangled app may not be capable to run on it.

Even so, if you know how to use Linux, and you're familiar with OpenWRT, you may have a new favorite toy.
People have already said they created a SSL VPN using this Nano Router.
I'd like to also make it do that too...I could use a SSL VPN when outside with just unsecured HotSpots available...so this is interesting to me too.

As for your attempt to install Windows 10, it would be interesting if it doesn't work, being Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit loaded.

My Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit, reported that my PCIe graphic card driver wasn't compatible with Win10, and needed to be updated...but no updates from Nvidia exists for it. I'm hoping the built-in Win10 driver may squeak by, but as yet I haven't updated my Win 8.1 to the Win 10 yet.

Maybe you're unable to install it because of a graphics issue of the stock graphics chips on board the T5730/35

My time period, with Microsoft, to update free is rapidly shortening in time...

Yup Q3A = terrible, so even for a game 15 years old the onboard graphic are defiantly not sufficient

as for on openWRT looks like a no http://forums.untangle.com/installation ... d-wrt.html

I'm on sky broadband so I'm stuck using their terrible Sky Hub 2 with 10/100 ethernet and abg wireless (shocking considering everyone else is shipping abgn and 1000 ethernet) its also in the T&C's that I can't change it and they can cease connection..

and the admin pages are terrible :/

but then its what i was doing before just using the sky hub as a modem then all the filtering was done from untangled

It does look like a very nice little router, I've got my self a Cisco Small Business router providing Wifi to the home due to the poorness of the sky wireless which also has VPN stuff built in - I'm just too scared to modify that :p since its currently doing its job (don't want to disrupt the misses and children's internet browsing) so maybe that would be a good move for me to go with, then I've just got to work out what I'm doing with my t5730 :p

I must also admit I never properly setup port forwarding to the untangled box, so anything that running off untanged was essentially on a separate network so couldn't see my media PC unless I plugged the media pc into that network but having the media pc plugged into the untangled network meat it wasn't accessible from the outside world (I'm waffeling now :p )

Windows 10 is running like a one legged dog for me going to run windows updates see if that changes anything

I ran into the same issues as you now, before I had my PCIe card in there.
Even with a standard PCI graphics card, it wasn't smooth and fast enough a frame-rate, for HDTV media playback, ...and games ...hahaha...remember, the FSB is still just 200 MHz...that's why even the PCIe graphics card still can't do much of anything for it's limited 3D rendering speed, plus the 1x speed, for games frame-rate too.
But it seems 1x speed for a PCIe card is all that's needed for playing back HDTV.

If I ever try putting the other 3 PCB trace-lines to a standard PCIe 16x socket, maybe I'll be able to activate 4x speed ...then *maybe* games should also be faster too, with better rendering speed of 3D using 4 PCIe lanes, at least.
(But the 200MHz FSB still limits 3D rendering speeds and quality)

About that nano-router...
The fun starts when you use 2 of them.
I was able to have one pickup the wifi signal of my home router, then thru it's Ethernet port, and cable, connect to a second nano-routers Ethernet port and have that second nano bridge my home routers internet access to my iPad, on a completely independent network channel, so no speed loss between the two, if I had used the same channel, otherwise.

Using purely only wifi connections...
If I'm able to install the correct OpenWRT packages, I'm hoping I can have it create a SSL VPN on 2 nano routers.

One(1) nano router at home, that will connect to my private home internet service when I'm outside, using my ISP's Unsecured HotSpot.
Then connect to my secured home internet nano, thru the 2nd nano I'd carry with me, my iPad could connect with, that would be setup to use the outside HotSpot as a bridge to the nano at home.

If that could work, I wouldn't need to keep a full computer on all the time, just to use as a SSL VPN to my secured internet service. The two nano-routers would do it...easy as pie..!

Plus, the nano at home could have a flash drive or dedicated hard drive attached to it, for my own cloud-storage drive, for files, or movies/photos.

Right - So I'm not looking at installing Ubuntu then installing OpenVPN instead of using Untangled (the GUI is web based and it's a bit sluggish)

turns out that Skys "truly Unlimited" broadband is limited because they block the standard VPN ports :/

anyway I'll update when I've installed things ^_^

If you don't want to compile a new bin-file, you don't need to install Ubuntu to put OpenWRT on the Nano Router. You can flash it thru windows too.

You simply flash the special "factory" firmware file he made that makes the HooToo Nano accept the OpenWRT firmware...then also a sysupgrade firmware file, to get the latest OpenWRT version (if you want to add additional updated packages)
Then you add the already made packages for that version of the OpenWRT FW

Also, your ISP (sky) limiting the standard VPN ports doesn't matter, because you create any port you want, to be the VPN.

Unless I'm not understanding what you meant with your last answer...

Heyyyy ya got the nano..!
Just make sure it fully works with the stock firmware before trying to install OpenWRT on it. Some can be buggy straight from the company...but that's just less than 3 to 5% ...most reviews on the USA Amazon site are 5 and 4 star reviews, happy with it.

I'll try and guide you thru the OpenWRT flashing, but I'm still learning about it too, and have only just succeeded with the IP camera packages.
But I'm also going to try the OpenVPN install, for my other two.
(Yes..I have 3 of them)

After you feel comfortable with package installations, you can create just about any configuration you want, it's just some limitations from the RAM storage size on it won't let you put EVERYTHING on it at the same time.

And if you reset the device, I think it also erases all the configs and packages you installed too.
If you don't mess-up the initial flashing process, you won't need a special serial cable to connect to its internal serial console to fix it. So, be careful.

But, if you do mess it up, it's not "bricked" because of the serial console that's built-in to it. As long as the BootLoader of OpenWRT is still in there, it can be fixed in several different ways using the built-in serial console.

Much the same as the Arduino or other small hobby board when programming it.

The photo of your Ubuntu screen is strange.
How did it create that diagonal screen combo of two different images?

The "slashed" display is as is, it does it on it own. It wasn't doing it in Windows, is there a tried and tested Linux distro out there that someone's confirmed working that I can test with?

I guess it could just be a driver issue

Make sure to get comfortable with understanding what's needed to be done before flashing it with the OpenWRT.
If you're unsure of anything, and you can't find the answer in that OpenWRT thread dealing with it, I'll try to help with the answer (if I know it)

Most of the issues have been discussed in that thread though, and someone there who's more familiar with the OpenWRT 'ins-and-outs' may also reply with any assistance.

As I said earlier, I'm also interested in installing the OpenVPN packages, so I'll be trying this at some point too...and we can both help each other.

You can search google for any I don't know of.

Just skimming through the OpenWRT stuff (20 pages

)at the moment while trying to install windows back onto my t5730, once I manage to I'll set the hootoo up from that ^_^

though this https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hootoo/tripmate-nano makes it look really simple!

as for the t5730's processor - its the standard one though I'm sure its a 64bit one anyway O_o

Yes it's easy to first put OpenWRT onto the TM-02, but what that first OpenWRT wiki page may not have mentioned about it is...

If you try to put any "newer" version packages into the older kernel OpenWRT firmware, it may complain with some notation of it couldn't be done.

This is because the newer OpenWRT packages were compiled to work on the newer kernels (for that week) and any older firmware files will have the older compiled kernel too.

If you find it saying *incompatible* when you try to install the OpenVPN package, that is why.
You'll need to get the newer sysupgrade firmware file, then install all important (including LuCI) regular separate packages that were in there before, to be compatible with the newer version sysupgrade firmware file from the "trunk" (this may have changed, recently, if someone already compiled a sysupgrade firmware file with ALL necessary packages already for the newer kernel too.

There may even be one with the OpenVPN and all needed others to match the newer kernel...I don't know...but there's "good and bad" points to starting to install your custom packages...

In the end, after you've installed them, and it works the way you've always *dreamed it would* ...then you'll see it was worth it. Until you want to try the newest OpenWRT release again, and need to start that full install of the packages again...AAAAAHHHHHHRRRRGGG.

Oh...one note I found everyone saying... Don't check-box the setting to save the config...because it messes-up the newer sysupgrade installations.

Each time you upgrade to a completely newer OpenWRT flash file (not the packages) you want to start it from having NO saved configs.
But after installing the main OpenWRT newer build, you can keep the config when just installing new packages.

If you ever get good at compiling your own firmware files, you won't need to worry about that limitation with the kernel, because you'll be creating a new kernel to work with the packages you've chosen, when you do the new compiled file.

This last point is also my *goal* with this, because it's much easier to fix the TM-02 if something goes wrong and it needs re-flashing, all your custom packages are already in your custom compiled flash file.

If I ever learn how to use Linux, I may try this someday.

I'm using my iPad 2 power adapter, as a test...with a Western Digital 1 TB 2.5 inch SATA II drive, and a USB to SATA adapter. The iPad power adapter is rated at 2.1 Amps at 5 volts, and I never had any issues with the hard drive not working, along with powering the HooToo nano.
By the way, I think the HooToo will see up to a 2 TB drive.
I'm not sure about any larger one.

So, if you have a USB power adapter laying around, sad it has nothing to do...

... This is a good use for it.
Of course, if you have a large Flash Drive stick, you need not worry about power requirements. (Just the limitations of the size USB stick you use)

Well already encountered the requirement to to need to sysupgrade - openvpn-openssl needed it...

so thats done - had to reinstall LuCi from SSH

i don't think once im running I'll be looking at newer releases..

linux is something I know pretty much nothing about and compiling kernels even less :p

My guess as to why Windows 10 can't work well on it, as my Win8.1 pro does, ...maybe it's the stock graphics chipset on yours giving poor performance under Win 10...as you've already found out.

Anyway, this is good, it means you can run the FatDog64 Linux distro on it.
If you ever want to try, just use the ISO file made to boot off a USB stick so you won't mess up the Win7 on there...and don't let the Linux save any files to your Win7 hard drive.

It's good you succeeded with sysupgrade for your TM02 and reinstalled all necessary packages and the OpenVPN, now it's just figuring out your configs for the device.

Remember to look at the OpenWRT wiki, and don't do anything to it if you're not sure of what the procedure is...before checking the wiki.
It's very easy to screw-up, and need to start from "square-one" again..!

No no...not XP.

There's no more updates to it, and has many security issues not being fixed.

Using XP is only suggested and recommended for your local private intranet ONLY...thru your home routers local connection...if you must still use XP

What happened to the Win7 you installed?

As for the ports issue...have you tried using it thru a local intranet first...
From just inside your local router access to the TM02
This way you can get an idea if you can actually connect, local PC to local PC... then you'll know if your ISP is blocking one of the other standard VPN ports.

If so, use a non-standard port, like a higher number.
Port 22 is known to too many hackers anyway.

Try something like 19543 ...28870 or 33590 ...Etc...
(It doesn't need to be those exact ones...but you get the idea)

Also, if all else fails... Register on the OpenWRT forum, and post your question and error codes...while you're trying stuff on your own, maybe someone will reply and give you the answer.

It'd probably take me weeks to dig through my collection of CDs to find the XP installer along with the product key :p

Win7 is still installed at the mo, but its available for various testing / playing around with - another option for me would be to install Kodi but would still need the graphics card upgrade

I tried openVPN internally - I got different results and alot more info in the .log file

I'll have to clear the config and start fresh - i started with the default stated port 1194 which didn't work then moved onto another 5 digit one which again is either blocked or port forwarding isn't setup correctly but then it looked like it accepted internally

I'll have to check back and compare

Guess it doesn't help that I'm also trying to connect from behind my workplaces' firewall with many blocked ports (school)

maybe I should clear the config and start fresh then I know where I am, I can't remember where I placed my keys - probably somewhere on my main rig but by the time I've found them I probably could of recreated a new set again

... erm deleted my bridge and now I can't get onto the hootoo.. also its not showing as an attached device to my router... (insert many many many swears here) I guess I'd better learn how to use that console port ^__^

Nope it appears to of been quite alright - it did have a few power downs (when the plug socket was stolen for vaccuuming :p ) but other than that, yeah on the whole time off a generic UK 3 pin to USB adapter 5V 1.2a I think it's rated at (I'll have ot check back on the ampage)

First off ...please don't put this little nano router first in your life.
I understand your family, (even your PET) comes before everything else

There's really no need to rush with the Nano's setup, please wait until you have the time to do it.

With that said...
Yes, RangerZ, from the OpenWRT site, is quite helpful there.
I always check in on that thread to see what's been updated, and I also noticed he mentioned packages missing from the newer Chaos Calmer 15.05 file. Did you have the 'Tunnel' package in there? Or did you need to add it now.

If the reset works to restore the bridge (which I really doubt it will) it's good to try it first, I don't know as much of the OpenWRT usage, as the member there RangerZ does, but I think I remember reading someone saying it deleted all the packages installed if it wasn't done in the correct way.
It responds differently if held in before or after power-up cycle, and for different time amounts (in seconds) it's held-in for.

And the fact the servers for the packages are still down (unless that's also resolved by now) this too can delay continuing with the nano setup.
Especially if you do delete by mistake, or need to install any new or old ones to the nano.

I'm happy to hear it's not burned-out

I usually find time in the day to have a small dabble with random projects while at work even if it just 40 odd minutes in a lunch break some time i get a good few hours where I can look into new projects xD

and at the end of the day it's to benefit myself to dail home from my work place / use my own internet connection back at home

I'll have to go through more pages and find additional info about this reset..

If I can connect to it again with out needing to open it up and solder a serial port to it I won't be too worried about having to reinstall the packages.

A power cycle didn't bring the bridge back anyway (tried that last night)

Hey...I found an interesting thread about someone saying his SSH Tunnel isn't connecting on his chosen port, and it's defaulting to port 22 all the time.

He found a solution, and I'm also wondering besides you not making a virtual Ethernet port, maybe you also need this change to allow your new different port number to work.

I find the problem.
# vi /etc/init.d/sshtunnel
Insert the following lines:

Now it used the port from the /etc/config/sshtunnel
I use OpenWRT (12.09, r36088). If it is not fixed in the new version, please fix it

might be worth adding as a failsafe - I was able to ssh in via port 22 @ 192.168.0.222 (fixed ip from my router via mac address) but as soon as I removed my bridge it was like I deleted the network configuration completely :/

anyway - I've gone ahead and reset dd-wrt - held the reset button down for 30 seconds. [EDIT] *I should've searched for OpenWRT here :/*

I've not yet managed to long on to the web interface (may be because of conflicting DNS, gateways and proxy servers) but my second netwotk card pick up a DHCP IP and a gateway from the HooToo the default one of 192.168.1.1 so we also know that the reset button work

I'll try connecting and booting with one of the other computer ive got here adn we'll see what damage the reset had pulled off (one thing we can tell right now is its defaulted the network config)

right - not sure whats what here but currently no able to access the web interface (device refusing connections) ... not an issue

SSH is still good via 192.168.1.1
logged in a root (no password)

top line I see read: BusyBox V1.24.1 (2015-11-22 12:14:03 CET) built-in shell (ash)

I'm currently looking for a command to display version or information or list of packages installed

edit - I guess it helps that I should be lookong for OpenWRT rather than DD-WRT

opkg list-installed

no LuCi so I guess that means theres no web internace to logon to

looks like the 30 second reset has removed all packages too - sadly installing packages again will have to wait until tomorrow (I'm behind a proxy here) unless i can install everything from USB (?)

I also don't want the HooToo to be come the networks main DHCP server - that may upset many people

oh and to add - the power adapter I've been using is rated 5.2v 500mA and its just a generic one AC/DC Adapter that was made in China

more to add - outside temp of the nano router hits 31.6 degrees C - room temp 22 degrees C

Oh crap...that sucks rotten eggs..! All packages gone.

Did the OpenWRT servers come back up so you'd be able to get the needed extra packages for OpenVPN and the Tunnel additions, as well as LuCI?

Their servers going down has affected everyone using OpenWRT, and many posts on the OpenWRT forum about it complaining they can't get their packages to continue setting up their routers.

One question...
How'd you keep thinking you had DD-WRT on there?

Do you handle your jobs internet IT stuff, and use dd-wrt for them?

Or was it just 'brain-freeze'?

If you can't get onto the default 192.168.1.1 by using the Ethernet port, you may need to use a serial cable to do it, and use the built-in console to install LuCI at least, then use LuCI to download the packages needed again.

Thing is, if their servers are still down, or are up but with a different location, you'd need to adjust LuCI config that defaults to the correct path to get them...
But if the servers are still down, there's not much you can do until they fix that situation.

Yes - I'm just finding it a little more difficult finding commands for the cLi, although I'm quite happy to do thing through cLi the LuCi GUI made things so much easier though (like editing the packages sources)

I've got a buffalo AirStation at hom running DD-WRT so I know its WRT and DD- ends up coming to mind first :p (this was a wireless bridge to my xbox and media pc before I managed to run a network cable to them) and yes partial brain freeze

That's strange...I would have thought that if your browser could see it all, so could the other ways of downloading.

I'm not familiar with wget....I don't know how to help you with it.

If all else fails, you could just use the GitHub zip download of everything, then direct your download path to your own PC drives directory to install internally.

I don't know...I'm just speaking of what others did and mentioned in the thread at his OpenWRT post.

It's also possible the GitHub site doesn't support directly updating the files from there...like the OpenWRT servers do.
Maybe that's why you're getting the 404 error with wget

I'm glad to read you're getting it all back again, to work from where you left off before the reset and other problems.

Now that you have all the 'fixes' for what you didn't try before, it should all be easy to get it working with the VPN, or at least closer to getting it working.

I didn't even know it existed for OpenWRT, if that's what you're saying.

Wasn't everything working Friday? Or is it, when you tried adding kmod-tun the router reset? ...wiping everything again?

If LuCI still comes on, and you can get into the default 192.168.1.1 address, there's still a chance nothing is really lost, except some settings, but not all the packages.
