Magic Jack Software Is Extremely Slow

Post by texbusch »

Our Magic Jack is acting extremely slow for some reason. I've uninstalled and re-installed it several times and that still doesn't help. It was working fine 4 days ago, but I moved and reformatted my computer, and when I re-installed Magic Jack this problem started.

I have a dial tone and I call out, but when I dial the numbers on my phone, it takes between 30 and 40 seconds for each number to pop up in the Magic Jack program on my PC. After it finally shows all the numbers I dialed on the program, it'll take it between 1 and 2 minutes to actually call out.

I never had this problem before I reformatted my comptuer. I've reformatted my computer in the past a few times and this problem never came up. All the other programs on my PC pop up and load right away, like they should, but Magic Jack doesn't. It's the only program on my PC that is acting this way.

I even switched phones to see if there was something wrong with the one I had been using, but that didn't do anything. It was having the same problem.

I'm wondering if it's something to do with the Magic Jack box itself or if it's just the program. However, when I plug it into the PC, it picks it up right away and the Magic Jack program starts up (although that takes forever now too). When I pick up the phone the program used to pop up above everything, no matter what I was running it would be at the top, right away, but now it doesn't do that.

I have no idea why it's being this slow, so any help at all would be appreciated.

You mentioned reformating the PC. Did you install the correct drivers? Chipset?

Running: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
Spyware/Malware/Virus: No. The PC was just reformatted so there's nothing on here except everything that came with it. Plus I put Avira back on.
Drivers/Chipset: Didn't have to mess with that as the factory image is in it's own partition and it restores everything from that. I've reformatted before the same way as this and had no problems with Magic Jack after doing it. This is the first time it's done this.

I even did a defrag last night just to make sure that might not be the problem, but I didn't have to do that after reformatting the PC before. Still, that didn't help it.

There's nothing that I've put on here except for Magic Jack and Avira after reformatting. I've made sure the firewall has an exception for Magic Jack, but that didn't help. I turned off the firewall temporarily and that didn't help, although I knew that wouldn't be the problem as the firewall has to do with the net and this is a problem with the program or the hardware. When I didn't have Avira installed the problem was still there, so it's not a problem with the antivirus.

I've run out of ideas here and the only other thing I can think of is it being a hardware problem with the Magic Jack box itself. So, if you have any ideas at all, please don't hesitate to share. I have family in the hospital (my brother's in the hospital out of state, has lukemia and just had a bone marrow transplant -- and my wife just went into the hospital yesterday for problems with her liver) and I need the phone working so I can be in contact with him and the family out of state.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried MJ on a different computer? Also try plugging the MJ into a rear USB port or get a Powered Hub. Also do not use the extension cord because it can cause many problems. If these tips do not help, I would purchase a new dongle from Radio Shack or somewhere else. Note: Before you plug in the new dongle, make sure you chat MJ support and have them transfer your number to the new dongle.

Hope this helps.

I know this is an old thread, but I currently ran into this issue. and was on the techchat line for a good hour, before I got tired and decided I'd go home and play around with some stuff. I'll just run through the stuff I did to get to the point I'm at now;

Reinstall MJ software, via this link and not the "upgrade.exe"

as this did not work, they figured it might be better for a more hardcore solution...

Used mjRemover via this from talk4free.com
THEN, unplugged the device and ran USBScrub

and then MicrosoftFixit50098.msi

Reinstalled MJ.

Well guess what? it still did the same ol' thing. but all those suggestions seem fairly reasonable. I definately had a problem with my PC, it wasn't the MJ dongle because it was working perfectly fine in another laptop. It wasn't my internet connection because well, I don't think the net connection would have anything to do with actual "SOFTWARE" portion.

After being told a series of programs that could be causing the issue, such as iTunes, utorrent, daemontools, and any dvd/cd burning software COULD conflict with MJ. Yes, a few of the most popular programs in the world is causing conflicts with MJ. Sounds like it should be vice-versa. But anyways. Just messing around I downloaded CCleaner. and what do ya know? I just ran the "Cleaner" portion, which is pretty much internet cache/cookies/junkfiles. and badaboom-badabing. Working like a charm.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents into this dead thread.
tl;dr, MJ Support are ALL females (talked to 3 of them), CCleaner fixed it

magicjack running extremely slow

Post by hekate »

After I had to uninstall and re-install the magic jack software it would take almost 30 seconds to dial a number clicked on from the contacts. I could not find any information on how to fix this so I thought I would post what worked for me. Problem was the program had re-installed with compatibility checked and was running as Windows XP SP3. To fix this Right Click the executable on the desktop go to properties, go to Compatibility, un-check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' hit OK and restart the program. Hope this helps someone, this was really annoying for a few weeks.
