Do you want to allow scripts to run & Adapter Link Down

Post by Somethings wrong here »

I have tried everything using MagicJack online support & previous forums. After being instructed to install/uninstall/unplug/replug/reboot/etc.. from over a dozen different technical support people, I got the message "ERROR BROKEN STORAGE". When that happened, both the MJ Techie and I gave up.

The problem is simple. I can't hear them and they can't hear me when I make or receive calls.

My phones work. I can get dial tones. Calls are successfully completed every single time, in or out. Just no sound.

I have a feeling the following issues may be important:

1..MagicJack ads force a pop-up window every couple minutes with the message "Scripts are usually safe. Do you want to allow scripts to run?"

2..Administrator event viewer shows the following error "Adapter Intel PRO/100+ Management adapter: Adapter Link down". It resets itself within 2 seconds, but the little balloon window pops up every 2-30 minutes to let me know my network cable is unplugged (it isn't)

I need NEW suggestions, as well as "did you check the simple stuff, stupid" suggestions. I have tried:

...one phone/multiple phone connections
...new cords/phones
...uninstall/reinstall/unplug/replug/change port
...MJ remover
...manually remove/diable everything MJ did, including CLCVO
...MJ recover (it can't find the device)
...allowing scripts/denying scripts
...MagicJack Techie reset my account
...checked all connections
...restart everything & reboot (worked for one call)
...adding MJ & talk4free into my trusted zones
...adding multiple ports, including 5060 & 5070 (tcp/udp)
...make/remove MJ as my default audio devices
...allowing digital audio then disabling digital audio (that worked for one call)
...removing, then updating drivers
...allowing every cookie from MJ & talk4free
...disabling everything in task manager, then reinstalling
...updating IE to 8
...disabling virus protection
...updating all firewalls, virus stuff, windows
...disabling 7 vienna (on my custom xp system)
...checking all usb ports using other devices (500 mA power to MJ)
...I'd like to reinstall the whole dang system and start over again from scratch, but I don't have the XP CD for this system.
...I have added everything I could think of in the "add/remove windows components" menu.
...Haven't had any problems with my Actiontec modem. I THINK it's configured correctly.
...checked speed (5mb/s down, 768kb/s up)
...device manager currently shows MJ in USB root hub (generic), DVD device, sound controller
...calling from dial pad (I don't have a mic)

WHEN MJ WORKS, the calls are fine, clear, without delays or hangups. I can call voicemail anytime I want. IT DOES WORK SOMETIMES, but only for one call after a tweak or restart.

I want to hear people when they call me and I want them to hear me.

I want to stop the little script pop-up window.

I'd like for my adapter link to stop going down.

Every single suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Please include "duh" stuff ... except uninstall/unplug/replug/install/upgrade!!! The MagicJack online support people had me do that a dozen times yesterday, to no avail.

What firewall are you using on your computer?
Did you select "Telephone" in the Menu?
Have you reinstalled or updated your Intel PRO/100+ drivers?

I'm using Zonealarm (free) & windows firewall. I THINK the settings are correct on both. The virus programs are AVG free, win defender, & ad-aware (free).

Telephone stays selected in MJ on this computer (xp), but the volume keeps resetting. When I've tried moving MJ to another computer (vista), the volume/headset control regularly reset itself.

I can't find updated drivers for the Intel adapter. I'm unsure where/how to check/find them manually (auto update/update driver program tells me I'm using the "best driver"). The PC manufacturer went bankrupt in 2008.

Btw, I'm intimately familiar with Win98se, but kinda lost with XP, Vista, & Win7. I really miss Win98's version of "find files & folders"!!!

Personally I would only run windows security essentials and remove all the other firewalls, spamware and anti-virus programs then see if it works.

I would never advise anyone to trust just one piece of software for protection these days. Ten years ago, maybe. I run Microsoft Security Essentials, Comodo, Ad-Aware and Advanced System Care on my XP and the MJ runs fine. Trusting just one security software is asking for trouble, imho.

Ditto.......
What one needs to know however, you can ONLY have 1 AV program running resident at a time. Yes you can have more than 1 AV program installed on your PC, and right click on a file and scan it, but only 1 of those can be running in the backgraud at a time. Trust me I know as I had to fix someone's PC a few years ago who install one on top of another and totally froze the PC. I had to edit the registry, sans mouse, and remove every instance of the new av program, fun fun fun..
Also not a good idea to have more than one firewall running at the same time ( I have seen that with weird results)

At least try what I am suggesting to see if it fixes the problem, then install away.

I would maybe even take it one step further and try it without any anti-virus/firewall running just to see if you can get MJ working. Then like you said, install away and see which software is mucking things up. With everything he had listed running, lord knows what's going on.

one thing is working...

Post by Somethings wrong here »

Zonealarm is an easy shutdown, but shutting down AVG takes some work.

After disabling every AVG component I could through the program, I went to msconfig to start disabling AVG's startups & services (disabling all through task manager is the final step), but I stopped.

I decided to google all the remote access managers to see what they were (I had disabled all of them when I first got the machine...I'm not familiar with XP OS/remote access stuff). When I realized they were needed, I enabled "normal startup".
With "normal startup", WinXP/7 Vienna, AVG enabled, Zonealarm enabled, and Win Firewall on, I could hear them and they could hear me FOR ONE CALL ONLY (talked to my brother using Magicjack for 20 minutes).

The adapter link is still going down (then up, then dected adapter).

Resetting all IE zones to default seems to have removed the script request pop-up window (some things are locked via group policy changes).

I have used double firewalls (and multiple virus/spyware protections) for 10 years without problems (on Win98se, XP, & Vista. If there is something new I should know, please be specific.

I will let you know what disabling all virus/spyware/etc protections does, as well as only allowing Win Firewall.

It didn't work

Post by Somethings wrong here »

I disabled every anti-virus/spyware program one by one. I restarted PC and modem after every action. Btw, I have to start MagicJack manually after each restart (it does NOT automatically load).

No change.

... just a note ... if I click no to "do you want to allow scripts to run", the ads don't appear on the MJ phone and the pop-up window stops appearing.

I can't figure out what is messing with the adapter link or why "do you want to allow scripts to run" is popping up outside of IE (MJ dialpad ads need scripts to run).

What components, exactly, are needed for voice support on a MJ phone system? PCtel? clcvo? utscsi? pctspk? What controls voice support? I read that 5060/5070 ports must be UDP ... what else?

BTW, MJremover (& add/remove programs) does NOT remove every MJ component.

IT WORKS

Post by Somethings wrong here »

well, taking it back to the store didn't work ... they wouldn't accept returns without the original packaging, so I tried something else.

I remembered MJ had worked on VISTA when I port forwarded 10,000-30,000 (a suggestion from another forum), but I wasn't entirely comfortable with that.

So this time, I changed my router firewall settings to custom and allowed every "out" port setting... IT WORKS!!

Calls are now clear and everyone can hear me and I can hear them. It's been working for a couple of days now :)

Merry Christmas :)
