VISTA SP1 - blocking MJ - I give up for now
More of a recap to help anyone else who has struggled as I have to make this damn thing work.
In short, I have a vista ultimate sp1 latop and after spending 20+ hours working on this I am giving up. I have a dial tone but cannot connect to any telephone number or receive incoming calls. The center menu on the softphone gui briefly shows my mj telephone number before perpetually asking me to double click on it after connected to the internet. Even after completing the registration screeen I continue to get the same message from that center menu.
The reality is that VISTA is unbelievably hard to control and is blocking the MJ in some way. Here is a short list of the things I have tried:
MagicFix - can't access MJ configuation
Reformat and Install upgrade
Regedit USB control from Admin
Anti Virus off and Firewall off
Opening TCP/UDP ports as needed by MJ including router
Now here is the kicker - ready?
After wasting most of my freetime on this last week, I went upstairs and plugged it into my wifes $600 XP HP latop and the MJ worked.
Trying to save money on your phone bill and working with VISTA - $100 and 20 hours of your life
Having the MJ work in 15 seconds on your wifes POS CPU - priceless

I see vista as when win xp first came out, it was a disaster, now with sp2 + critical updates from micro$oft it works better then ever.I hope this is the case with vista or they are trying really hard to make vista unhackable but user friendly at the same time which means it will be harder to troubleshoot the technical issues of the OS,I used win2000 pro for years untill xp pro finally got their act togheter.I noticed more problems with MJ on the vista OS ,just my two cents.

help! I am running out of USB ports!!!!!!!!
Tell me, Mr. Anderson... what good is a phone call... if you're unable to speak?

JKCDN,
I read a post here or DSLreports and a guy had the same problem as you. His solution was uninstall SP1 install MagicJack then reinstall MagicJack. He claims if you install in that order everything including MJ ends up working.
A lot of time to invest but he indicated that the whole process worked fine with no Vista problems (Hmmm "No Vista Problems" sounds like an oxymoron to me).

I had the same problem and I loaded MJ before SP1. My solution was by fluke. I tried a headset, changed the menu on MJ to use the headset and it worked for incoming and outgoing calls. I still can't use a handset. My son (also with Vista O/S) had the same problem and the headset also worked for him. It's not a perfect solution but it works. Incidentally my MJ works perfectly with both headset and handset on any XP I've tried it on. One more thing I did add the 3 ports to my router as recommended on the MJ site.
SP1 Vista
Thanks to all for the sympathy -
By chance I had installed the MJ just before installing SP1 and installed the mj again after SP1 was on the machine - had the same issues. I have tried switching to menu to headseat and have had no luck in correcting the problem. One of the first things I did was install the so called "VISTA" upgrade. Just not working for me.

Installed MagicJack after Vista SP1 without a Vista Issue
I installed MagicJack this week. I've been running SP1 on Vista Home Premium since it became available.
I did not have any issues with Vista itself. On the other hand, I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 and they don't like each other.
Every time Kaspersky scans startup files, it hangs up when it starts the boot sector scan.
IF I unplug MJ, Kaspersky is happy again (after a reboot).
I have zero issues if I disable Boot Sector scanning.
Anybody have a solution to this problem? I'm not going to give up the best protection on the market for MJ.
I submitted a help request to Kaspersky about 3 days ago and have not heard back from them.

I dont use that security software you have, But I just set my security software to ignore my MJ drive while scanning, At first I had problems with it, But after the setting, everything seem to be good .JackHammer wrote:I installed MagicJack this week. Re: SP1 Vista
why did you have to reinstall, you could have left it plug in during the upgrade of vista SP1 , that is how it work for me, I did not take it off, And then ones that are having issue is cause they moved it, Im currently running Vista 64x sp1 with MJ install and it works perfect.JKCDN wrote:Thanks to all for the sympathy -

Had some problems with SP1 on Vista but fixed it
My MJ Softphone kept crashing after Vista SP1 Installation.
But the problem did not start until I've switched from one User Profile in Vista to another.
On the second User profile Softphone would load to almost 90% then crash erroring out and quitting.
Shortly after the same problem would start happening to the first user account profile.
I've fixed it by doing the following:
1. Disabled the WindowsDefender which is a built-in anti-spyware from Microsoft.
2. Formated the magicJack drive (not the one which is a CD but the one which is a disk).
3. Deleted the installation directory of C:\Users\Adminuser\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp (and the similar one for thhe other user profile)
4. Ran the Upgrade.exe (the one for Vista).
5. Restarted PC
Everything is still working since then, which is 3 weeks after.
I've only lost the address book. But I did it intentionally since had reasons to believe that something could have gotten corrupted in the address book file and it was possibly causing the crashing.
Still don't know what was the main reason for the fix.
But it was a fix for me
Good luck you sufferers

I had not been able to receive any calls on my MJ system. I called the Chat three times and they agreed it is not my system but in the MJ system and their engineers would fix it immediately
. That was on the 13th of April. I tried everything I could think of and the next morning I tried something new.
First I tried calling my MJ number with my landline phone (a wireless Uniden 4 phone system on Verizon) then I tried with my cellphone (a RAZR V3 on AT&T) then I tried my MJ phone (a Panasonic 3 phone plugged into my MJ in the front of my computer (a HP Elite with an Intel 6600 quad 4 processor, 3 GB of ram and running Windows Vista with SP 1 upgrade). In every instance I got a message saying the number was not in service or they couldn’t connect as dialed. When I go to magicjack.com and log in to Customer Care and Magic Fix I always get a red check next to “Unable to access your MagicJack etc…..”.
Everything else worked fine. I can call any number I want and I get perfect reception.. I couldn’t get Voicemail or Call Forwarding because I couldn’t communicate with MJ nor could they communicate with mine. When my son, calls me on his MJ we connect and have a normal conversation his calls come through perfectly. Until this morning his was the only calls that did.
Now get this. This morning I remembered an article about phone jacks that I read a few days ago. The article said that the old phone jacks used 4 wires because of the ringer and that you didn’t need but two wires on the new phones. I dug out a 20 year old phone I had and you guessed it, the MJ system worked. After using the older phone for a while I plugged in my wireless phone and it was working also, at least for several hours. When it quit working again I plugged in the old phone and everything started working again. I called Chat Support and they put me through to a supervisor who walked me through my problem. He had me reformat the drive that MJ had installed. There are two drives MJ installs, only one of them will give you the format option. He then had me download a file called “mjrecover_setup.exe” and run that. He had me download and run the latest “upgrade” file and last he had me run the Vista upgrade file from the MJ Home website. Everything works now and has been working for three days and counting. I still get a red X on the MagicFix chart but they told me to forget that. There must be a glitch there but it doesn’t affect my system. If you can get anything out of my experience then I’m happy. If not, well we tried.I think the formatting and recovery was the secret.

MagicJack and Vista SP1 ...
I put MagicJack (MJ) on a WinXP SP2 machine and it has been operating wonderfully. I am very pleased.
I delayed trying MJ on Vista / Vista SP1 because of the "community noise" surrounding the OS and its SP1. Anyway, once I was satisfied with Vista SP1, I installed MJ and it worked wonderfully (incoming & outgoing calls ... everything). Again I am very pleased.
** In my case, there was one catch for Vista SP1:
Unlike XP, the installation did not happen automatically on Vista. I had to nudge the installation by manually executing the "autorun.exe" application in one of the MJ's mounted drives. After that, the installation, upgrade and operation (including software application) occurred as smooth as a sausage sliding across melting ice.

The only thing I can recommend to the troubled Vista users out there: Ensure your known Vista or SP1 issues are completely resolved before adding MJ. I am not convinced the order of MJ vs. SP1 is relevant.
God speed!

My problem that I can't seem to fix
I bought my magic jack about 4 months ago and installed it on a vista ultimate 64 with no problems. About three weeks ago my computer crashed and I did a reinstall of everything. Since that I cannot get my Magicjack to work. I have chatted online with 6 different people on their website and noone can figure it out. When I plug in the MJ it says loading drivers, then it says hardware is ready for use, the light comes on but nothing starts up. Now something that confuses me is that while chatting I was told to format the drives. Now first of all I have two drives added one says a removable drive f: and the other says cd rom drive g: I am able to format neither of these. It says make sure they are connected properly. When I run MagicFix it says to plug in the magic jack. My computer has an 950 Watt powersupply. I have used all front and back usb slots with no change. The Blue Light Is On. When I run the vista upgrade I also get you must plug it in to get it to work. Now when I try to open the mj drives removable or cd rom they cannot be opened for some reason?????? Any Help Appreciated
rabloom, try this: http://www.magicjacktv.com/1/site/downl ... _setup.exe .
If no luck, try this test program: http://tjnet.com/software/download/voip ... up1313.exe .
Does it show your 560C USB Phone? If so, you should get dial tone; pressed keys should display in the test window. You can run the Audio Test to see if it will record and play your voice.
If all of the above pass, there is probably a driver problem for the pseudo-CD and/or USB drive. It may be possible to start MJ manually, with a shortcut that bypasses these devices.

Try again to get the audio test to run -- it seems strange that two pretty much independent things are broken. Make sure that the Speaker and Microphone sliders are all the way to the right, and that the two Mute boxes are both unchecked. Click the Audio Test button, pick up the phone, verify that Hook Status goes to Off Hook, follow instructions. If it still fails, can you locate the USB phone in Device Manager? Is it shown as working properly?
Do you stil have the mjusbsp folder on your system? If so, create an empty folder named magicJack, and set up a shortcut pointing to the magicJack.exe contained in the mjusbsp folder, with a target like:Of course, substitute the actual paths for \path\to . Then double-click the shortcut; MJ should start. The first time, a registration screen will appear, enter your email and password and with luck you'll get a Ready to Call indication.
Code: Select all
"C:\path\to\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "C:\path\to\magicJack"
One Problem
I have the folder but no file named magicjack.exe
Re: One Problem
First, Windows might be hiding the file name extensions; see http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1468/vis ... file_types . If that's not it, see if running http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe restores the files you need. It might not, because it may choke on the corrupted MJ before copying the necessary files. In that case, you can open the upgrade.exe with e.g. 7-Zip, and extract the files to a folder you create. I made a test folder with the following files, taken from upgrade.exe (click on $[35], $[38] (the second one), $[35]).rabloom wrote:I have the folder but no file named magicjack.exe

Sorry that this is turning out to be so much trouble -- I'd just send you a .zip file, but there is unfortunately a copyright issue.
ok
I did download 7-zip and followed your directions. When I double click on my shortcut I get an hourglass for about 2 seconds and nothing. I have no clue? I want to thank you very much for all your help even though no success yet.
Sorry, I don't know whether this latest problem is related to Vista (I don't have a Vista PC here to test), if the underlying corruption is at fault, or if you didn't set something up correctly. At this point, I feel that the best approach is to see if the pseudo-CD and USB drive are readable on another PC, preferably one running XP. If you don't want to actually install MJ on the test machine, hold down the shift key when inserting the device, or disable autorun by some other means.
If the MJ is readable on the XP machine, we can try to force reinstallation of the drivers on Vista. If it is unreadable on XP, there are tools to forcibly reinitialize the device.

I thought about this a little more and am guessing that MJ may unable to access the personal data folder. First, confirm that the magicJack folder that you created exists, and that you can save a file in it (e.g. make a foo.txt with notepad). If no luck, post the Target and Start in values for your shortcut; perhaps I can spot an error. (If the pathnames have personal data that you want to hide such as your name, replace that part with John Doe or whatever, but don't alter any punctuation, spacing, etc.)
OK

THANK YOU
You are a genious.
I hope you are getting paid from MJ I think i will go on and chat with them and tell them you should be on payroll with a raise.
All I did was reinstall my audio drivers and now it works I can actually make calls.
Wow I was ready to throw this thing away. THANKS!!!!

I've heard some of that myself, lately, and strongly suspect that it is a server-side MJ problem. When you experience the trouble, go to http://www.testyourvoip.com/ and test to San Jose. If you see many inbound packets lost or discarded, the problem is with your Internet connection, other load on your LAN, or with Internet infrastructure and unrelated to MJ. If the score is good, it's probably at MJ. If you can give me a number that shows the trouble, belonging to a business that answers with an IVR (so I won't disturb anyone with repeated test calls), I'll see if there may be a workaround.rabloom wrote:Does anyone ever have a problem with MJ that when you are on a call it cuts in and out even the ringing on outgoing calls is cutting in and out?
Today
Now I woke up this am and powered up my computer. When I tried to use mj I got the error again about the audio device. I know that it must me that USB audio that used to be in the device mgr but is no longer there any ideas
Sorry, I don't know what's wrong. Try unplugging the MJ, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in again. If that doesn't help, possible areas of trouble:
1. Hardware defect in MJ.
2. Computer not supplying enough power to USB.
3. Problem with computer's USB controller.
4. Software problem in OS.
Please eliminate #1 by testing on another machine. If it fails the same way, even after reinitializing it, try to get a replacement unit from MJ.
#2. I know that your computer has a huge power supply, but the USB controller may still not be supplying enough power to the bus. If you have a powered hub, give it a try.
#3. Try a USB port on another controller. I know that you did that already, but at the time there was a software issue, too.
#4. I believe that this is most likely. Unfortunately, I know nothing about Vista so can't help you with this. Perhaps someone else will jump in.

I'm having the same SP1 issues. I start SoftPhone and then I get the "Connect to internet and double click" message. I spent an hour with their live chat and finally told them that either they escalate to engineering like they had said they would do 20 minutes ago or I would cancel. Hoepfully it will get to someone who knows what they're doing.
What kind of router do you have? Do a test with your PC connected directly to the cable modem. Verify that your Internet access works without the router, then plug in MJ. (You'll have to cycle power on the modem and reboot your PC, for this test and again when you reconnect the router.) If that doesn't work and you have a software firewall other than Windows Firewall, test with the firewall turned off (after you have reconnected the router).dervari wrote:I'm having the same SP1 issues. However i do set priority to high in task manager when MJ software loads up and i do have QoS in windows software turned off and my audio is clear and i'd blast ya ear out. Only problem i ever had was today i ran the spoofer and it did nothing but give me a error 3 that i could'nt get rid of. So to get system back to where it was i just used Vista system restore to 3 hours before i ran the spoofer and no more problems. I use a 3 set wireless AT&T 5.8ghz system. Thing is it has a amp for the output audio which you really never see as the FCC controls that. I hit that button and i make people say whoa thats loud but clear. And im a programmer. Its a toy to me and i program warez cracks etc lol, Enjoy guys in MJ land.
i've done all that. I'm at 15 year Network Engineer and CCIE. The heart of the matter is that it works on two XP SP2 machines but not a Vista SP1 machine. My FW is a Netscreen 5GT. I logged packets and see traffic, but it's just plain not working. The login works, because if I enter an invalid pasword it tells me so. if I enter the correct PW, it goes back to Smartphone and "double click".Stewart wrote:What kind of router do you have? Assuming that the XP machines are on the same subnet behind the Netscreen, you should be able to compare working and non-working to see where it's going astray. I believe that you should see an HTTPS connection to prov1.talk4free.com, followed by a REGISTER request to your SIP proxy, probably proxy1.atlanta.talk4free.com:5070 .
Do you see REGISTER requests? If not, what is the last traffic that you do see? If yes, what response, if any, do you see?

Looks like they have acknowledged problems with Vista SP2. When I fired up SoftPhone, the ad banner on the left shows a frowny face and a notice that XP SP3 and Vista SP2 may have issues.
BTW, here is my capture from my firewall. I am connecting to the reg and proxy machines.

XP SP3 Vista SP2
I got the new Dell Inspiron with Vista Home Premium version with SP1 ....Fortunetly the people I originally bought the Magic Jack from sent me a new one for the one that failed after reloading XP..Anyway that computer is gone...
I loaded the new Magicjack on the the new computer...after a few seconds I selected a area code ...it gave me a new number within that area code and has worked perfectly ever since.
I also saw the ad on the left indicating a potential problem with the Service Packs
...I have always shut off the Windows automatic updates and have done the same with this computer...I have always made the selections myself..If I thought they were necessay..I say be very selective about downloading items to your computer ..no matter where the are from
My theory is.....if it ain't broke don't fix it..!!!...I have a good Virus program..and use a good Spyware program with a Regedit program...
The times I have gotten into trouble is when I allowed WINDOWS to automatically down load its updates.....So for now...My MJ works great...the computer is fast and seems stable and reliable.....I ain't messin with it..!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to ramble on here....!! Ya'll have a great Memorial Day.!!!
