Can you get your phone number back if MJ is stolen?

Post by chrmn »

Hi all...anyone know if you can get your phone number back if the MJ device is stolen and you need to replace it? I want to use the number for business and worry if the device gets lost or stolen, I won't have access to the phone number anymore.

You should do a tech chat with MJ to be sure. But I think you don't have to worry. MJ ties the MJ USB device's serial number with a phone number. If you'd lose the MJ USB device, then you should contact MJ, purchase a new MJ device, give the new MJ device's serial number to MJ CSR and they would update your current MJ account/phone number with the new MJ device's serial number.

This should be no difference if you'd lose your GSM/CDMA cell phone. You would contact the cell phone provider/carrier and they should re-establish your current cell phone number with the new device's serial number (new SIM for GSM, new phone for CDMA).

LikeMagic....it would be "Like Magic" if what you said is true....but I found it is not, unfortunately.

One of my MJ's stopped functioning after 6 months of use. All computers I tried failed to recognize the MJ device.

I contacted the TechChat hoping they would provide me a replacement....but the answer was a curt "Sorry...we cannot do that. We'll replace the device only during the first month. You need to buy a new one".

Next, I asked if I buy a new MJ, can it be assigned the same number as my damaged one (and transferring the balance 6 months to the new one). The answer again....is "Sorry...we can't do that. Your new MJ comes with a new number and one year of service".

Based on users' experience with MJ Tech Chat, I'm not surprised. However, it doesn't mean that the MJ CSR was right. You may want to do another Tech Chat or perhaps send an email to Dan the man himself. It's NOT reasonable for a customer to lose his/her phone number when he/she bought a new hardware replacement. Just bring this issue to Dan and I'm sure it will be resolved.

There's a member on this forum saying that he obtained a replacement MJ device and gave its new serial number to MJ CSR and they basically updated their record and he got to keep his existing MJ number. Check out this discussion where that user stated he could keep his existing number with a new replacement MJ device:

http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/bran ... -t866.html

Perhaps your case is slightly different that the MJ device failed after six months of use that the MJ CSR just copied & pasted their typical answer. Contact Dan the man and he should fix it up for you.

Wow I consider the Magic Jack much to gimpy to think about trying to use it for a business right now. Maybe 6 months to a year but I wouldn't try to pin my business to it right now. Good luck!

mj lost

Post by VA3RNE »

I am in situation where my mj was lost in the mail. I asked tech support to cancel the number so it cannot be used but it is taking forever. I wonder if anybody would know how to change their email registered account in the portal (email identified to the account when mj was activated) so that whoever stole it can have his freebee for a year but cannot charge a renewal to the account.

your MJ is not shipped with a number. you pick a number once you've received your MJ, plugged it in and activated your magic jack. I don't think it's possible to get a number until you have the thing....of course I could be wrong....but i don't think so

VA3RNE,

"I lost the mj after getting my number."

This conversation is getting very confusing either it got lost on its way to you or it got lost after you received it. Which way was it?

Beside it doesn't make any difference who has it or what they do with it. That is between MJ and the bad guys. Unless you scratched your email address and password on the back no one will know your personal information anyway. And as far as charging anything to your account well that is silly you can't even charge anything to your MJ account. If you want something from them you have to give them Money, Credit cards, Rupees, blocks of salt, whatever.

Are you just trolling?

Obviously it got lost after receiving the mj and getting a number. Otherwise who cares less. Unfortunately, I gave my email address and password in a letter inserted in the package for my friend to access my portal. That was the mistake. This is the reason why I was asking mj tech support how to cancel the email account but takes them ages to reply.

By the way, in your portal you have the option to click for additional years of subscription. This is automatically charge to your card which you provided when you ordered your unit by internet.

Your statement about things be automatically charged to your credit card with out you entering the credit card information is absolutely false - Don't believe me try it!

All you have to do is log into this Portal (God only now where that term came from) and change your Email. That will certainly put the hurt on anyone attempting to access your MJ account.

This is a Tech Forum not "Judge Judy's TV melodrama" why don't you contact the people that can help you there is no one here that can do anything to correct the mess you think you have gotten yourself into.

Yes it is a one time charge like you are purchasing a soda from the store... I also wouldnt trust that page as it is not secure with SSL Encryption(I'm sure magicjack has enough funds to purchase SSL... makes me wonder sometimes)... Purchase a prepaid credit card from walmart for the exact amount then you are set.

gooney,

Your are not saying that you can log into your account and add items without re-enter your credit information are you ?

When I log int all the address information and name are their but the credit card information is left blank and you have to re-enter it to continue.

But you are 100% correct about it not be a secure SSL page. Boy am I embarrassed, I never noticed that and I consider myself a safe on-line shopper or did anyway.

Thanks for pointing that out, I would report it to MJ if I didn't have to go thru the trial and torture involved in using their on-line Chat facility, which is akin to a bed of nails.

PS - you live in the wrong part of the state. Down here in God's country it is 81 and Sunny, I see you are going for a high of 69 and rain.

When you purchase an extra year from MJ... They dont hold your credit card information... You have to enter a credit card everytime you make a purchase just like at the store.
