Outgoing calls automatically disconnect after 30 secs!

Post by KGE_Gulfport »

It appears that something is interfering with outgoing calls causing the link to disconnect in about 30 secs. I can receive calls and they last a very long time.

My ports are all set for 5060 and 5070 within the router. If anyone else has a potential solution to the issue affecting outgoing calls, please share! I need a fix really bad!

HELP!

It could be your routers firmware. Go to the mfg site and see if there is an updated firmware for it. I have heard of Linksys routers doing exactly what is happening to you. Also try to disconnect the router and only use your modem and see what happens. If you still get disconnected after 30 seconds then there is a bunch of other things you can look into ( all are discussed in this forum)

Linksys Router Owners - Recommended Steps to Take!

Post by KGE_Gulfport »

Since I recently discovered some fantastic steps to take to establish better connectivity between the MagicJack software and their servers on the internet, I thought I would share the changes I made that improved my overall operability of the MJ. Here are the steps:

1. Download "EndItAll2" program - this program is used to remove all unnecessary programs from your computer's memory leaving only required system programs and the MJ.

2. Direct Connection to the modem or router - I was using my laptop as a wireless device for connection to the internet, and I have since connected directly to the router.

3. Run IPCONFIG - you will need to know your current Ethernet Controller IP address that was assigned to your computer by the router (if you use one) or your modem. You will need this address later!

4. Port Forwarding Router Changes - Under the "Applications and Gaming" tab, you will need to add some Port Forwarding changes as follows:

a. Add 5060 to 5060 as one port change - You can name this one MagicJack1. Forward it to the IP address you identified in Step 3 and click the box to "Enable" it.

b. Add 5070 to 5070 as another change - You can name this one MagicJack2. Forward it to the same IP address you identified in Step 3 and "Enable" this one as well.

c. MINIMIZE the Linksys Application for now

d. Follow the below steps (PART ONE thru PART SEVEN) to add the final port forwarding change to your route - . This was posted awhile back, but it contains the crucial part necessary to end the problem of the 30 sec disconnect issue:

------------
PART ONE
------------
1.) In windows click the lower-left START button
2.) ...then click on the ...RUN item ( a pop-up box will pop-up)
3.) at the Open: space type "cmd" (without the quotes)
4.) hit OK (this brings up a DOS command-line terminal...)

---------------
PART TWO
---------------
1.) at the command prompt > type "netstat -an" (without the quotes)
2.) hit the return button
3.) a chart called "Active Connections" will appear

----------------------
PART THREE
----------------------
1.) the first column (reading left-to-right) is PROTO
2.) two types of protocols appear: TCP and UDP
3.) the second column (Local Address) reads: "ip_address:port_number"
4.) look for a line having these 3 values:
1... UDP (that's easy)
2... 127.0.0.1 (that's a little more difficult)
3... a port number between 40,000 and 65,000 (that's tough)
5.) EXAMPLE
UDP 127.0.0.1:58228 *.*

--------------------------
PART FOUR
--------------------------
1.) Look for a matching line with the same "UDP, the same port number,
but a different ip address
UDP 192.168.1.7:58228 *.*
2.) the different ip number is the ip address of your MagicJack unit. This should match to the IP address you found earlier in Step 3

----------------------------
PART FIVE
----------------------------

1.) MAXIMIZE the Linksys "Applications & Gaming" page of your Linksys router software and INSERT the identified port number (per the example 58228, yours will be different) to be forwarded to the ip address of the MagicJack unit (per the example 192.168.1.7, yours will be different). You can name it "MagicJack3".

EXAMPLE:

MAGICJACK3 58228 58228 192.168.1.7 (Check "Enable" box)

NOTE: Be sure to click the SAVE button before you close the Linksys application

---------------------------
PART SIX
---------------------------
Close down all the windows and enjoy...!

-------------------------
PART SEVEN
-------------------------
Remember EACH TIME YOU REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER. YOU NEED TO REPEAT THIS PROCESS.....! the computer re-assigns a different port number to the MagicJack unit

SUMMARY: Since I made the above changes, my laptop has remained connected to the internet for over 48 hours. Connecting directly to the router made a huge difference! Making the Port Forwarding changes corrected the "drop call after 30 secs" problem for outgoing & incoming calls. This Friday I receive my HP Thin Client which I will dedicate solely to the use of the MJ thus freeing up my laptop. Since the Thin Client will run continuously, I expect not to have to not worry about my IP address changing on my network unless I have an unexpected power outage or Windows update reboot. Life should be much better in terms of MJ operation. If that situation changes, I will update you immediately!

Thanks to the several forum users who have provided me the valuable feedback that helped get through the two issues that had me stumped for a solution. You folks are great, and I hope what I have recommended to my fellow Linksys router owners provides you with the performance you deserve from the MagicJack.

Would you mind providing your router model and confirm that you have upgraded to the latest firmware revision?

Some further ideas...

Disable any settings related to SIP ALG in your router

You should be able to specify within your router setup so that your PC always gets the same DHCP IP addy.

You could change the network settings on your PC to a fixed ip address within the accepted range

Ultimate potential solution......
You should see if your router is compatible with 3rd party Tomato or DD-WRT firmware which will allow you to specify a port for your UDP/RTP packets as well as permit QOS.
Disable QOS service on your PC (run services.msc)
Good Luck

CrackerJack!

I have the Linksys WRT54GS ver 1.1 Router. I downloaded the latest firmware for that device from Cisco. I assume that the firmware update can only be used on ver 1.1, so I made no attempt to download any other firmware for new models.

I will see if the settings you suggested exist within my model. I had Tomato firmware some time ago, but for various reasons (I forget what they were), I switched back to the Linksys firmware. I may get brave enough to try and install the DD-WRT firmware, but the instructions look rather intense, and I certainly do not want to turn my router into a brick by making a mistake.

Anyway, I will see what changes I can make and press forward!
